Chapter 48: Jonathan’s Breakthrough
"There you go." One of the Wilderwolf servant's smiled as he finished pouring water into a small bowl. Beside the bowl, the little kitten meowed in thanks before lapping up the water, quenching her thirst.
"Meow!" The little kitten licked her lips in delight, she had gotten tired from another full day of travel and fighting. At least they have now finally reached the bottom of Thunder Mountain and are just resting the night away before heading off to whatever destination is next, which is yet to be decided.
The journey down Thunder Mountain had been quite uneventful. On the first day, they were able to pass the Thunder Scaled Half-Dragon's without issue once more and reached the third cave where the Wilderwolf party was reunited with the two servants who had been left behind. And on the second and third day, everyone was able to travel down Thunder Mountain at a brisk pace, slaying any Magical Beast that dared to attack while also collecting a few herbs and other items that they found along the way.
After recollecting on the events of the last few days, the kitten turned her attention to a tent a little ways from her position. It was Jonathan's tent.
The kitten's eyes narrowed with suspicion. 'Ever since he's left the Thunder Mountain ruins, he's not let me into his tent... I've had to suffer through Uncle Kil's snoring the last three days!'
The little kitten felt like crying whenever she recalled those sleepless nights with Uncle Kil's snoring blaring loudly, destroying the kitten's hope of gaining any sleep. It would be all good if she could make any achievements with her cultivation, but that was going just as terribly as well...
The little kitten could only sigh as she looked at the tent next to Jonathan's which was Uncle Kil's tent.
'There's no point holding it off any longer... Let's try to get some sleep... If only there was room in the servant and soldier's tent...' The little kitten sulked her way over to Uncle Kil's tent. 'Maybe I should just sleep outside... But what if a Magical Beast sneaks up on me... And its so cold up here in the North at night...'
Before entering, she could already hear Uncle Kil's snoring. But holding back her tears, the little kitten found herself the furthest point from Uncle Kil and cuddled herself for warmth as she attempted to get to sleep.
Despite her complaining, the little kitten was soon out like a light and a peaceful night passed uninhibited. Or would have until...
★★★
Thwoom!
A low hum could suddenly be heard, tickling the little kitten's ears and stirring her awake. Her eyes opened slowly and her head raised up to look for where this noise was coming from
'What's happening?!' The little kitten's eyes opened wide when she saw that a deep, azure glow was blaring through the side of the tent. Next to her, the little kitten could see Uncle Kil sat up with a wry smile on his face. 'Is this what I think it is?'
"Ah, he actually did it... A 16 year old Spirit Ranked Magician..." Uncle Kil shook his head in disbelief, but yet he couldn't get rid of the wide grin on his face. "Our family has really been blessed this generation!"
'It is what I thought. That light was Jonathan's soul going through its evolution!!' The little kitten's mouth gaped open before forming a wide grin as she rushed out of the tent, scampering into Jonathan's in a matter of seconds.
"Meow, meow!" The little kitten yammered joyfully upon seeing Jonathan. Without speaking, she could only share her congratulations like this.
Across from her, Jonathan's once closed eyes opened slowly. When the little kitten saw his irises, she could swear she could see an azure glow in them for a split second before returning to normal. But her attention was quickly grabbed by another peculiar sight.
On Jonathan's lap, the little kitten could see a partially sheaved small sword like object that he was holding loosely with his two hands. Both the handle of the small sword and its sheave were perfectly rectangular and wooden, holding a slight curve. The sheave and handle were also a brownish-red colour with black patterns travelling its whole length. The sheave was parted from the small sword's guard by a few cm's, showing a shining silver blade n that was clean and nimble, but sharp.
When Jonathan saw the kitten's enthusiasm as it congratulated him on his breakthrough and then saw her staring in bewilderment at the blade in his hand, he couldn't hold back the prideful grin that formed on his face as he rose the small sword in front of himself, unsheaving it and showing the kitten a closer look.
"This was my reward from the Thunder Mountain Trials. The Spirit Blade!" Jonathan spoke, a delighted tone to his voice. "Not only is this a Gold Rarity Vibrant Item, it is also a blade that holds a strong affinity to Spirit Ranked Magician's. Any Magician at the Inner Haven Rank like I was when cultivating with this item will find it easier to cultivate to the Spirit Rank, acting almost like a guide. The item's use doesn't end there though, as it is also a weapon that excels when used by a Spirit Rank Magician... But all of this is much too complicated for you right now, all you need to know is that your big brother Jonathan is now at the Spirit Rank!"
The little kitten's eyes opened wide in shock. 'Who are you calling big brother?!... I'm your big... Small physically but mentally big, big sister!!'
Jonathan rolled his eyes, as if he understood the reason behind the shocked and aggrieved look the kitten was displaying.
"Well done, nephew!" Uncle Kil's voice alerted the two to his presence as he joined the two in the tent a second later, a sigh accompanying him. "You may not have broken the record for youngest Spirit Rank Magician throughout Heavenly Claw World since time immemorial, but you are the youngest in at least a millennia, ever since we have been cut off from the rest of the universe."
"Meow?!" The little kitten's eyes lit up at this new information, especially that Jonathan was the youngest Magician to reach Spirit Rank in a Millennia. 'Jonathan's that amazing?!'
"Hehe, are you doubting big brother's abilities." Jonathan held a boastful smirk as he pointed to himself with his thumb.
"Yeah, yeah. You're amazing and all that useless jazz... What's more important is that you'll be in danger now..." Uncle Kil said with a frown.
"Hah... Most likely... Our enemies already wanted me dead already, if they find out about my breakthrough..." Jonathan sighed in frustration.
"Meow?" The little kitten put her paw in Jonathan's knee and tilted her head, in a questioning gesture.
"Well, our families one of the two backbones of a Kingdom as the left Hand of the King and Queen. We're bound to have many enemies, from outside and inside the Kingdom..." Jonathan explained, a helpless look painting his features.
"Let's keep mum about this as long as we can... Obviously people will find out eventually, you can't hold back on revealing your true strength for too long, but until we complete your year of adventuring at least, let us try not too stir up any trouble." Uncle Kil spoke seriously, much different to his usual, somewhat childish personality.
"Yes. When we return in a few months, Father will probably have me going through lessons to learn how to become the next head of the family, which will also serve to keep me grounded in Falcon City for a while. That'll be the safest place for me... Especially with Aunt there..." Jonathan said.
"Actually, its only your Father in Falcon City right now." Uncle Kil's words shocked Jonathan.
"Huh, why? Has something happened?" Jonathan asked with a worried expression.
"Don't worry, the families completely fine. It seems there's been an event in the Claw Reverence Empire that drew over a lot of the Sky Magician's all over Heavenly Claw world, or so I've heard through a message your father sent me yesterday." Uncle Kil spoke with clear words.
"That's still troubling." Jonathan could only pray his family would be safe.
"Meow?" The little kitten turned to Uncle Kil and mewed.
"Huh? What is it." Uncle Kil asked in confusion before turning to his nephew. "What's she saying."
The corner of Jonathan's mouth twitched. 'What am I, a cat translator?'
"I think she's wondering what we mean when we say, 'Heavenly Claw world" Jonathan answered in an impeccable manner anyway.
The little kitten nodded, clearly in agreement.
"Oh, you explain it to her." Uncle Kil waved Jonathan and the little kitten off. "I'm tired, I'm going back to my tent to sleep. I'm guessing you'll be staying here, little lass?"
The little kitten nodded in response and Uncle Kil left amidst a loud yawn. Soon, the mild sound of snoring could be heard coming from the tent next to their's.
"No patience, that old fart." Jonathan shook his head helplessly. "Its not that hard to explain. Heavenly Claw World is our home, it is a planet in the Higher Realms. Does that make sense?"
"Meow!" The little kitten nodded.
"Heavenly Claw World is subservient to a large entity called the Emerald Sky Empire, which is a rather large empire that controls hundreds of planets like ours, or at least it was. We don't know really as we've not been in contact with the rest of the universe in a thousand years... Anyway, Heavenly Claw world is a small planet that was taken control of by the Emerald Sky Empire several millennia ago. Due to this world's sole continents unique shape that peculiarly resembles a claw, it was then called Heavenly Claw world... But our connection to the Emerald Sky Empire was cut off by an event that happened a thousand years ago when our world was disconnected from the rest of the universe... I'll end this explanation here though, you'll learn all of this stuff in time."
The little kitten nodded her head as she stifled a yawn.
The little kitten and Jonathan continued to talk... Or Jonathan talked while the little kitten listened for several more minutes until sleep crept up on the both of them and the two finally succumbed to their bodies wishes. With Uncle Kil's snoring just a distant noise and the comfort of Jonathan's sleeping bag, the little kitten fell into a deep sleep that was desperately needed after several days of accumulated fighting, travel and cultivation...
