Reborn in the Post-Apocalyptic World: Building Infrastructure

Chapter 82: I Couldn’t Hold Back, I’m Sorry

Sheng Hongye double-checked, and indeed, they were no longer in Lizhou.

First, they needed to find a place to rest before considering how to get back.

Thirty minutes later, Sheng Hongye found a metal container resembling a mobile food truck, just enough to accommodate both of them. He then used his healing ability on Su Ling.

Ten minutes later, Su Ling stirred slightly, and Sheng Hongye quickly withdrew his hand from her chest.

In pain, Su Ling furrowed her eyebrows, letting out a weak moan, and finally opened her eyes in a daze.

"Where are we...?" Su Ling asked.

Sheng Hongye cleared his throat and looked out the window. "I don't know. It doesn't seem like Lizhou."

Struggling to sit up, Su Ling noticed that she was covered with a piece of cloth. Worried about her lack of clothing, she hurriedly wrapped herself with the fabric.

Then, she cleared her throat and calmly said, "I can't believe we were blown this far. Let's forget about it today. Tomorrow morning, we'll figure out our location and then find a way to leave."

Sheng Hongye nodded but inexplicably saw an image of himself and Su Ling walking on a pile of debris, wrapped in tattered cloth.

He couldn't help but feel a little cold in his heart.

Escaping from this place wouldn't be easy.

Lost in thought, Su Ling asked again, "Are you injured?"

Looking at Su Ling's calm composure, Sheng Hongye felt a bit embarrassed.

He had tied a piece of emerald green cloth around his waist, which looked ridiculous. He had never felt so embarrassed in his life and couldn't help shrinking into a corner.

The light inside the metal room was dim, and he hoped Su Ling hadn't seen it.

Casually, he replied, "I'm fine. Are you hungry?"

"Not hungry," Su Ling answered.

Her internal organs still felt displaced, causing intense pain. How could she think about hunger?

After her response, they lapsed into an endless silence.

In the cramped space, their breaths were the only sounds.

Su Ling wanted to say something to ease the awkward and weird atmosphere, but the thought of their near-naked state left her feeling embarrassed, making her wish she could bury her head in the ground.

As time passed, neither of them spoke.

After a while, Sheng Hongye's soft snoring echoed in the darkness.

Finally, Su Ling breathed a sigh of relief.

Feeling her body in the darkness, she found it smooth, as if she hadn't been injured at all. She couldn't help but wonder if everything she felt in the gust of wind was just an illusion.

She vividly remembered her body being covered in wounds caused by the wind blades, so why were they all gone now?

Lost in her thoughts, she eventually lay down on the ground, feeling utterly drained even though she hadn't sustained any injuries. It was as if she had swum a hundred laps, with every limb aching.

In her drowsiness, she had a dream.

In the dream, she saw her benefactor again, she was desperately trying to catch up to him to see his face. However, when he turned around, his face transformed into that of a zombie...

Su Ling abruptly opened her eyes, and at the same time, a loud clanging sound echoed around her.

The day had dawned.

Sheng Hongye pushed open the metal door.

As Su Ling saw the green cloth wrapped around his waist, she couldn't help but think of Siberian grass skirts.

She quickly bit her lip, forcibly suppressing the urge to laugh.

Sheng Hongye's current appearance was more akin to an African native.

But soon, he quickly retreated back inside.

The sunlight was still intense, and as soon as his skin was exposed to it, a burning pain spread across his body.

He turned around and spotted Su Ling sitting on the ground, giving him a strange look.

At that moment, Sheng Hongye wished he could find a hole to disappear into.

Impressively, he managed to maintain a composed façade on his face.

His stern features formed a sharp countenance that showed no signs of faltering.

"Are you awake?" he asked.

Su Ling hummed in response and asked in return, "Are you going out?"

"To find some supplies."

Sheng Hongye pushed open the deformed, broken door again, his body still oozing with embarrassment.

Su Ling hesitated for a moment, then took off the cloth from her body.

"This piece of cloth is big enough; you can use it for now."

Both of them had nearly identical personalities. No matter how embarrassed they felt inside, their faces remained steadfast.

It truly was a skill that demanded tremendous practice.

"No need, you can use it," Sheng Hongye refused without a second thought.

Su Ling came up behind him and draped the cloth over his shoulder.

She generously said, "Why don't you find a bigger one and bring it back? I'll stay here for now and wait for you."

Looking at the emerald green fabric, Sheng Hongye couldn't help but feel numb in his scalp. However, he knew he couldn't go outside without covering up, so he clung to the cloth.

"Okay, don't wander around."

"I know."

In fact, all of this is just nonsense talk. With such strong ultraviolet rays, it was impossible for Su Ling to venture out in her nearly naked form.

After a while, the sun rose.

Under the scorching sun, the metal sheet felt stiflingly hot, making Su Ling feel as if she were inside a sauna. She struggled to catch her breath.

When she kicked open the door, she saw Sheng Hongye approaching from a distance, wrapped in a massive white floral cloth.

Su Ling could never have imagined such a sight.

If Sheng Hongye weren't so tall, she might have mistaken him for an Indian woman or a landmine thief.

The white floral cloth was divided into three pieces—one covered his head and face, another wrapped around his waist, and the rest draped over his body.

Judging by the color and texture, it seemed to be a curtain, at least two and a half meters tall.

In his right hand, he held two buckets of instant noodles, while the left clutched the green cloth.

"Getting impatient?" Sheng Hongye stepped into the metal room.

Su Ling couldn't help but burst into laughter.

Despite trying to suppress it, she failed completely and ended up laughing out loud, covering her face.

Su Ling couldn't remember the last time she had laughed like this.

It seemed like there hadn't been anything joyful since her mother's passing.

Today, she truly laughed to her heart's content, shaking all over, and even shedding a few tears.

Sheng Hongye's expression was a bit ugly, and he tossed the green cloth onto Su Ling's head before leaving.

Once outside, he couldn't hold it in either and gritted his teeth.

After about five minutes, Su Ling finally managed to stop laughing.

"Done laughing?" Sheng Hongye re-entered the room.

Su Ling rubbed her sore cheeks and lowered her head. "I'm sorry, I couldn't help it."

"Well, let's eat then. I looked around, but there's no water, so we'll have to eat the noodles dry."

Sheng Hongye opened the box of instant noodles as he spoke.

Su Ling didn't dare to look at him and started chewing the noodles.

After finishing the meal, her mood had considerably calmed down.

Sheng Hongye spoke again, "We need to immediately find some clothes to wear and transportation."

"Okay."

Su Ling followed his lead and tore the fabric into three pieces, draping them around herself.

"It's just too hot here. We need to find another resting place before it gets dark."

After tidying up, the two of them left the metal room.

As they took a few steps, they heard someone shouting, "Mother of the Earth, Panlong Island, humanity's last hope!"
