Chapter 48: Lingering Shadow of Liu Yu
Han Qiang also noticed this and couldn't help but gasp.
"Are the zombies conscious?"
Geng Hao and Chen Yu exclaimed at the same time.
In the not-so-bright moonlight, the two also saw the leading zombie in the open space.
The zombie appeared to be male and taller than the average ones.
His clothes were all torn, making it difficult to identify his identity.
At this moment, he stood alone in the open space, his head facing the sky, emitting a rhythmic howl.
"If that's the case, the days ahead will probably be even more difficult."
A voice came from behind, and it was none other than the white-haired Professor Bai.
Obviously, he also noticed this point.
Sheng Hongye narrowed his narrow eyes and said heavily, "After this zombie tide, we must quickly fortify the building. If there are a few more rains, most of the zombies may gain consciousness. By then, we will be even more passive. And there's the issue of food that needs to be resolved quickly."
No one said a word, but their hearts were heavy.
Zombies and food were like two huge mountains, suffocating them.
Han Qiang tried to use his fire ability a few times, but the flames were too small and couldn't reach the zombies at all.
Moreover, the ability was unpredictable. It angered him so much that he slammed the wall heavily, he can only pick up a shovel to deal with the zombies.
It was maddening that these zombies didn't feel pain at all. No matter how many were smashed, new ones immediately swarmed in.
The horrifying and piercing howls sent shivers down their spines.
On Su Ling's side, she had been continuously reinforcing the damages on the east side, but unfortunately, the speed of reinforcement couldn't keep up with the zombies' attacking pace.
It was evident that these zombies were truly being led by someone, as they knew to attack the weak spots of the building.
The damaged bricks were quickly piled up again. Although Geng Hao and the others didn't know whose ability it was, they had grown accustomed to such things.
In this situation, the only thought on everyone's mind was to survive. No one had the time to think about these trivial matters.
In the blink of an eye, several hours had passed in this mechanical hacking and smashing, and the sky finally revealed a faint light.
At the moment the first ray of dawn appeared, a piercing howl sounded, causing the zombies to retreat instantly.
Simultaneously, the damaged areas were once again automatically repaired.
Everyone sat down on the ground, panting heavily.
This was pure physical labor, even more exhausting than laying bricks on a construction site.
Sheng Hongye took the lead and picked up the shovel, saying to the others, "Get up. Take this opportunity to go back and rest for a while. Zombies probably won't move during the day. At one o'clock in the afternoon, we'll go out to search for supplies. Who will stay here to watch the base?"
Chen Yu also stood up with the support of the wall and said valiantly, "Let Professor Bai stay. We are all strong and can explore more places."
Everyone agreed, but Professor Bai was unwilling to stay behind because of his age. He insisted on going with the others. In the end, the majority ruled, and Professor Bai stayed.
The others had also been awake all night, unable to close their eyes amidst the scratching and howling sounds.
Su Ling was especially exhausted. Upon hearing that the zombies had retreated, she felt deflated like a balloon and collapsed on the bed.
"I can't take it anymore. I'll go and rest for a while," she said and fell asleep instantly.
Guan Yuxin looked at Su Ling thoughtfully and also closed her eyes.
The base fell into a peaceful silence, as if it had died.
Time quickly approached noon, and Sheng Hongye woke up on time. After a glance at Er Lei, he gathered everyone to go out and find supplies.
Li Xueying immediately followed downstairs and said in a feigned manner, "Brother Ye, I want to go too."
Sheng Hongye looked upstairs and knew that keeping Li Xueying in the base would cause trouble, so he reluctantly agreed.
Su Rou also wanted to follow, but Sheng Hongye and the others had already left in the car. She knew she couldn't compete with Su Ling, so she hid inside and didn't come out.
Su Ling, of course, wouldn't purposely go to provoke herself for no reason. After a simple wash, she came downstairs with Guan Yuxin.
They boiled some porridge using the liquefied gas and then called Gu Kai Xuan and Professor Bai. Everyone had a simple meal together.
Professor Bai didn't eat the canned food. Instead, he looked at the fish meat and sighed, "This is the best time to eat vegetables. It's probably difficult to see leafy green vegetables for a long time."
Seeing the sad expression on the old professor's face, Su Ling quickly said, "It won't be like that. Once things stabilize, we can grow some ourselves."
Professor Bai shook his head. "The current ultraviolet radiation is not suitable for growing vegetables."
Su Ling fell silent as it was indeed the case. Besides zombies, there was nothing that wasn't afraid of ultraviolet radiation.
Sheng Hongye and the others went out completely wrapped up, trying not to expose their skin. Unless there was a significant change, it would be challenging to cultivate crops again.
It was a terrifying situation.
Without crops, everything would cease to exist. Thinking of a life even crueler than the present, Su Ling lost her appetite instantly.
Guan Yuxin was much more optimistic and nudged Su Ling with her elbow.
"Don't think too much. Even if the sky falls, we'll bear it together."
Su Ling was infected by Guan Yuxin's optimism and smiled, saying, "You're right. Since the heavens have let a few of us survive, there must be a purpose."
Guan Yuxin looked smug and said, "Exactly! Maybe we're the ancestors of future humans. Who knows, they might make statues of us."
Professor Bai sighed, put down his chopsticks, and went upstairs.
Guan Yuxin shrugged. "The old man probably can't get used to eating canned food."
"That's the way it is. In a blink of an eye, it has been more than a month since the apocalypse began. Even if we find a farmhouse, vegetables will probably be out of the question."
Su Ling glanced at Gu Kai Xuan, who was eating silently.
Young people were okay; they could endure for a while. However, the elderly and children needed their vitamins replenished. If they couldn't eat vegetables and fruits for a long time, their health would inevitably suffer.
Tomorrow, when they go out to search, they must find seeds for them.
However, even Su Ling felt that this hope was too slim.
If they couldn't even obtain food, where would they get seeds?
Lost in thought, she suddenly heard the sound of a car engine outside the courtyard.
Gu Kai Xuan immediately stood up and ran outside with his short legs.
"Uncle must be back," he said.
Sheng Hongye had promised him that he would bring back a toy today.
Gu Kai Xuan had been eagerly anticipating it, and upon hearing the car sound, he couldn't contain himself.
Su Ling smiled and shook her head.
"Being a child is still the best. You don't have to think about anything, so blissful."
Guan Yuxin also agreed and finished her porridge.
After they finished cleaning up the dishes, Gu Kai Xuan still hadn't come back inside, and there was no sound from outside.
Su Ling felt something was off and immediately went to the door. Just as she pushed it open, she saw a smug-looking Liu Yu.
"Miss Su, we meet again."
