Reborn as an AI: Helping My Past Self Become a Writer

Chapter 7: 7 A Choice in a Dead End

Shen Yuchen and Lin Xinyi ran up the stairs as quickly as they could, the air around them thick with tension. The footsteps of the black-clad men echoed through the hall, getting closer, closer, and more urgent with every passing second. Shen Yuchen could almost feel their breath right behind them.

They finally turned into a narrow corridor, and Lin Xinyi suddenly stopped, lowering her voice. "There's a hidden passage here, we can hide there for a while."

Shen Yuchen looked at her, his eyes filled with complexity. "Are you sure this is safe? We've run out of options, we'll be caught if we stay."

Lin Xinyi paused for a moment, her grip on Shen Yuchen's hand tightening. "If we don't go in, they'll catch us for sure. Trust me, this passage is our only way out."

Shen Yuchen hesitated for a second. The situation was becoming dire, and the pressure was almost suffocating. He took a deep breath and finally nodded. "Alright, let's go."

They quickly moved through the secret passage, the corridor growing darker with each step, the silence around them almost suffocating. With every step, the sound of black-clad men's footsteps grew fainter, but the sense of danger didn't fade. Shen Yuchen couldn't shake off the feeling that something worse was waiting for them.

As they turned into what seemed like an abandoned room, a sudden, violent crashing sound came from behind them. The door was smashed open, and the black-clad figures were once again rushing through.

"They've found us!" Lin Xinyi's face turned pale.

Shen Yuchen felt a wave of dizziness hit him. He knew they were trapped. There was no way out now. The only choice they had left was to move forward, to keep searching for a way out.

"We have to get out of here!" Lin Xinyi's voice was filled with urgency, "Follow me!"

She grabbed Shen Yuchen's hand and they dashed through a broken wooden door into a darker hallway. The atmosphere grew more tense with every step they took. Shen Yuchen could feel his heart pounding, his thoughts in chaos. The "Awakening" project, his connection with the AI—everything felt so far from his understanding. Right now, the only thing that mattered was escaping this building.

At the end of the hallway stood a heavy iron door. Lin Xinyi turned to look at Shen Yuchen, her eyes filled with determination.

"That's the only exit we have."

Just as they were about to reach the door, a cold laugh echoed from behind them. A tall man in black appeared, his figures looming in the narrow hallway, his eyes cold and emotionless.

"You're not getting away." His voice was icy, the tone filled with certainty.

Shen Yuchen's heart sank, and he realized there was no escape. The path ahead was blocked. The black-clad men had surrounded them on all sides. The only thing left was to move forward, no matter what lay ahead.

"We need to move!" Lin Xinyi's voice was sharp and commanding. She pushed the heavy iron door open, dragging Shen Yuchen through.

But beyond the door was a narrow, dimly lit underground tunnel, the walls thick with iron, the passage twisting like a maze leading into an endless abyss. Shen Yuchen's breath quickened, but he knew there was no turning back. They had to keep moving forward.

"Go! We have to get out of this area quickly." Lin Xinyi's voice was firm as she urged Shen Yuchen forward.

They sprinted through the winding tunnel, Shen Yuchen's legs growing heavy, his mind foggy. The black-clad men would undoubtedly follow them. There was no safety here. Like Lin Xinyi had said, their only hope was to escape and keep running, seeking a new refuge.

However, Shen Yuchen felt a growing unease in his chest. The path ahead didn't seem as simple as it first appeared. They were facing far more than just the black-clad men. Something deeper, darker, was waiting for them.

Then, up ahead, the tunnel split into two paths. Lin Xinyi paused for a brief moment, then turned to Shen Yuchen, her eyes filled with a complicated emotion.

"We need to split up." Her voice was steady, without hesitation.

Shen Yuchen froze, his gaze locking with hers, confusion and concern flooding his mind.

"What?"

Lin Xinyi didn't hesitate, her expression resolute. She looked directly at him, her tone unwavering. "This is the only way. Only by splitting up can you stay safe."

Shen Yuchen grabbed her arm in panic. "What are you planning to do?"

Lin Xinyi's eyes softened for a moment, but the determination in them never wavered. "I'll lead them away. You have to find a chance to leave this place. Remember, no matter what happens, stay calm."

Shen Yuchen's heart was a whirlpool of emotions, but he knew she was right. The only thing he could do now was trust her and do everything he could to escape this dead-end.

"Be careful." His voice was barely a whisper, filled with reluctance and worry.

Lin Xinyi gave him a faint smile, as though everything had been decided long ago.

"You too."

They exchanged one last, fleeting look before they separated at the tunnel's junction. Shen Yuchen understood the unspoken words between them—the road ahead might be the last time they ever saw each other.
