Chapter 29 - Part 1 - The Day I Went to School
“Hey, we’re here. It says Class 1-1 for first years?”
A few days ago, we received our teleportation badges and student IDs, which serve as our school identification, in the mail after confirming our admission to Daehyun Elementary School.
I’m not sure if it’s the same everywhere, but Daehyun’s student IDs were cute and pretty.
They were designed as bracelets with a thin chain of metal extending from a round orb in the center.
They’re convenient to carry since you can wear them on your wrist.
The teleportation badge was shaped like a small shield with the school logo on it.
It seemed like something you could pin on a school jacket or shirt.
Along with the student ID and teleportation badge, there was also a letter included in the envelope.
Though, it was more like an instruction manual for the teleportation badge and student ID than an actual letter.
The issued teleportation badge contained two coordinates: the school’s location and each student’s home address.
The usage is simple—while holding the badge, you just need to imagine the place you want to go.
If you think of teleporting, you can move to either school or home, whichever one you’re focusing on.
If it’s hard to imagine, just hold the badge and say “school” or “return.”
To add or change coordinates, you have to contact the school administration office.
Next, we looked over the information about the student ID.
It mentioned that the student ID provides helpful information about the school to enrolled students, so it advised us not to treat it carelessly or lose it.
There was also a section with basic instructions on how to operate the student ID.
When I tried using it, the student ID felt like a mix between a computer and a cellphone.
But it was mainly focused on providing school-related information.
It felt like the school website had been transformed into a data bank format.
It was very useful for contacting the school or finding information related to it.
It even had a notification feature, like a cellphone, so when something important came up, an alert would appear.
Since then, we’d been using this convenient student ID to learn various things about the school.
For example, we learned about things like the dormitory system and school uniforms.
The dormitory information was basically what we’d heard already.
As for the uniforms… Just as the club president had briefly mentioned, elementary students had the freedom to wear uniforms or not.
We could choose between casual clothes and uniforms, whichever we preferred.
But that applied only to elementary school.
However, I decided to wear the uniform.
The main reason was that I didn’t want to worry about outfits every day.
Come to think of it, Daehyun’s uniform is coated with magic, so it also serves as “armor” for defending against spells.
Plus, I had already bought the uniform.
When I said I wanted to wear it, Mom bought it for me right away.
The uniform was surprisingly expensive.
I guess it’s because it’s enchanted.
But in return, it was comfortable and convenient.
It could adjust its size to fit my body, and I could even customize things like the skirt length.
Well, anyway, while I was reading through the announcements and posts on the student ID, a notice about class assignments came up.
I was checking it out when Inha spoke with a bright expression.
“I got mine, too! Class 1-1 for first years! That’s great. We’re in the same class.”
“Yeah.”
I smiled and high-fived Inha.
“They don’t divide elementary classes by skill or type, right?”
“Yeah, it’s random.”
“That’s a relief.”
Could randomly mixing the classes be part of the school’s strategy to protect information or abilities?
I thought about that while remembering the club president.
I would have to start calling her ‘senior’ now.
“This student ID is really amazing. It’s like a computer.”
“I thought the same thing.
And it has a return function where it automatically comes back to you if it gets too far from its owner.”
“Really?”
Inha fiddled with her student ID, her eyes sparkling.
I looked at her fondly before glancing back at my own student ID.
There were still so many things I wanted to check.
Well, as students who haven’t officially started school yet, the information we can access is somewhat limited.
It wasn’t just that.
The information seemed to be limited based on whether we could use magic or not.
You could view basic information by pressing the main part of the student ID, but to see deeper information, you needed to channel magic into it.
Also, the orb at the core of the student ID slowly changed color according to the magic it reacted to.
When we first received them, Inha’s was blue, and mine was a clear color.
Now, hers had turned to a green shade, mixed halfway with yellow, while mine had become a deep navy blue.
Thinking about it, maybe the reason the student ID colors were different when they arrived had to do with Daehyun’s Confidentiality Policy.
For convenience, it would have been easier to distribute them in a uniform color for the whole group.
But they sent them in different colors, perhaps to avoid categorizing students by skill level based on the color of their IDs.
‘Well, I heard that over half of the incoming students already know how to use magic.’
It was a bit disappointing to have so many restricted areas of information, but even with just this, it was enough to understand a fair amount about Daehyun.
We had already learned quite a bit.
“Did you see the facility map yesterday?”
“Yeah, it was impressive.
I’d heard there was a shopping district, but there were way more shops than I expected.
They had stationery stores, restaurants, clothing shops, a general store, even a big mart, and plenty of snack places like cafés.
They even sold pizza and fried chicken.”
“You must be happy they have a separate library.”
“Yeah! And there was even a comic rental store nearby.
I think it’ll be fun.”
At this rate, it looked like going out to play after school instead of going straight home would become a regular habit.
Of course, our allowance is limited.
It seemed like there were many parks and spots like walking paths.
Most importantly, the school lunch system was great.
School lunches are free, but you can also bring a packed lunch or buy something in the shopping district.
It’s nice having food so close by, and the free school meals are also a plus.
Since school lunches are an extremely important factor for students, I felt happy about it.
While tapping away on the student ID, smiling to myself, I suddenly got curious and decided to look up the school rules.
『Within designated school areas (laboratories, training rooms, playgrounds, gyms, and the high school building—except certain classrooms and hallways), offensive magic is prohibited from being used against people—except in emergencies.
Examples: Self-defense, repelling intruders.
Elementary students are allowed to mix casual clothes and uniforms.
From middle school onward, uniforms must be worn in school buildings (outside of class buildings, casual clothes are permitted).
Magic items with certain levels of offensive or defensive enchantments require approval from the student council or teachers.
Student IDs must be carried at all times.』
I read through them all.
The best part was that there were no restrictions on accessories, hair dye, or hair length.
Finally, I looked over the text at the bottom.
『Highest priority rule. Breaking this five times results in suspension, and breaking it thirteen times leads to expulsion.
Discussing a student’s magical abilities without their permission, whether with other students, teachers, or anyone in sight, is strictly prohibited.
Even with permission, it must never be disclosed externally.』
There were several other rules about confidentiality.
Penalties for breaking them a few times, and restrictions to help enforce them.
『For level-based classes, no information regarding the class content may be disclosed.
In cases of unfair treatment, students may appeal to the council or take legal action externally.』
Naturally, the skills of students within the same class, as well as magical knowledge, are also prohibited from being shared.
This rule had a restriction placed on it.
I looked at it with a curious expression.
How did the school policies end up so focused on secrecy?
I wondered if the school director had some significant incident related to the disclosure of magical abilities in the past.
“There are five days left until the entrance ceremony, right?”
“That’s right.”
“What should we do until then?”
Inha, unusually excited, had a beaming expression.
I looked away from my student ID and over at her.
“Practice magic?”
“…Let’s go out somewhere.”
Inha’s expression immediately soured as she grabbed my wrist.
Huh? Wait—what?
“We’ll be doing so much magic practice at school that we’ll be sick of it.
And didn’t you hear properly? We have to escape.”
“Huh?”
“Mom said she’d treat us to something delicious to celebrate our admission tomorrow.”
Inha whispered in my ear.
“I saw Mom making a reservation yesterday. It’s at a top-class restaurant.”
“Wow, sounds delicious! Huh? But why?”
“…Mom and Auntie are planning something together. They’re determined to put you in a really pretty dress. They’ll probably come pick us up soon, so let’s hurry and escape.”
I tilted my head in confusion at Inha’s words.
“But I like picking out clothes.”
Inha looked back at me in momentary surprise.
“…Are you serious?”
“Yeah. Plus, if we’re going to buy something, I’d rather choose something I actually like!”
That’s why I always refused whenever Mom tried to go shopping without me and insisted on tagging along.
Sure, my legs got tired, but thanks to my magic, I was unstoppable, ha-ha~!
“Perfect! That’s exactly it, Eunha!”
At that moment, the door burst open, and Auntie Suna entered and hugged me tightly.
“Mom?!” Inha let out a small scream.
“Our Inha never cares about clothes. Mirae’s daughter is just thrilled! No wonder!
Today, let’s pick out a be~autiful dress with Auntie, shall we?”
“Yes!”
I raised my hand high with a bright smile.
A dress! Sure, it might be expensive, but Auntie Suna was wealthy, and I figured that this was a privilege of being a kid.
Besides, I was really excited to wear a dress!
Since it was something I’d soon outgrow, I thought they’d just rent one… huh?
“Now that I think about it, are we renting the dress?”
“No? We’re buying it.”
“Hmm… But it’s not like I’ll have many chances to wear it, and besides, I’ll grow out of it quickly.”
Auntie went silent, as if that thought hadn’t crossed her mind.
Well, Auntie Suna probably had plenty of places to wear dresses like that.
Auntie Suna’s face showed a hint of hesitation.
“Hmm, you are young, after all.
You don’t need a high-end dress just to go somewhere like that… no, but still… alright!”
“…?”
“I’ll buy you a dress that’s fancy and pretty enough to wear as casual clothing too!
Alright, let’s go! Inha, you’re coming too, right? Since Eunha’s going~.”
Auntie Suna grabbed my hand firmly, stepped out of the room, and looked back at Inha with a beaming expression.
Seeing Auntie Suna so excited, Inha sighed briefly and then came to stand beside me.
When Inha grabbed my empty left hand tightly, I smiled brightly.
This was going to be fun. I should pick out clothes for Inha, too~.
In the end, Inha ended up coming with us.
Although she was reluctant at first, she seemed to get into it as we picked out my clothes, suggesting various outfits for me to try on.
Changing clothes was a bit of a hassle, but trying them on was fun.
Some of the clothes didn’t suit me at all, and a few weren’t quite to my taste, which was a bit disappointing.
I carefully picked out just one outfit.
Auntie Suna looked a bit disappointed, but I firmly chose just one.
It was because the price was astronomical…
Even though it was enchanted with preservation magic, I’d have to wear it sparingly.
I hugged the dress and smiled shyly.
The food at the top-class restaurant, where I wore my elegant new dress, was, of course, absolutely delicious.
Time flew by, and before we knew it, the day of the entrance ceremony had arrived.
On the morning of the ceremony, I hummed to myself as I put on my uniform.
“I really like this uniform.”
I murmured as I added the final touch, a ribbon on the collar.
I spun around, looking at my reflection in the mirror from head to toe in my uniform.
The black blazer had beige lines, and a thin, red ribbon was buttoned under the shirt collar.
The skirt was also black with beige lines, a short pleated skirt that showed my thighs.
The buttons were silver and fairly thick.
For reference, elementary school uniforms have thin red ribbons and short skirts, while middle and high school uniforms have longer skirts and ties.
Middle schoolers wear blue ties, and high schoolers wear red.
For the summer uniform, the material is lighter, and the long-sleeved shirt becomes short-sleeved, but the ribbon, tie, and skirt colors and styles stay the same.
After checking my uniform, I pinned the badge to my chest.
Usually, badges are worn on the sleeve or chest pocket.
So, I did the same.
Apparently, some kids wear it on a necklace to avoid losing it…
But since it has a return spell on it, I didn’t think that would be necessary.
I smiled after fastening my student ID to my wrist like a bracelet, then turned away from the mirror to check my bag.
There weren’t many items in my light backpack.
At most, I had a pencil case and one notebook.
Of course, it was expected to be almost empty since we’d be receiving our textbooks at school.
Once we’re a bit more skilled, we can store textbooks and necessary items in the Pocket Dimension within the student ID.
But I’d heard that elementary students aren’t skilled enough to use the Pocket Dimension feature yet.
So, as an elementary student, I wouldn’t be able to use it.
‘What kind of technology is this?’
I stared intently at the student ID on my wrist, curious.
What kind of magic could make something like this?
Of course, the student ID itself seemed like a very small machine.
But it wasn’t just any ordinary machine; it was a magical device, a fusion of science and magic.
I could see the color of the magic flowing through the student ID in my vision.
It was now completely infused with my color.
