"Come on, buddy, who said it's your turn?"
"I promise, when we get to Pewter City, we'll find you a strong opponent who's evenly matched."
Tyson patted Charmeleon's shoulder, coaxing it into holding off on battling for now.
Since Charmeleon had grown into its newfound Advanced-level strength, it had gradually lost interest in fighting weaker, Excellent-level opponents. With no other choice, Tyson had to let Eevee take the stage instead.
It wasn't ideal, but Tyson couldn't bear to watch potential experience points and training opportunities slip away. Compared to Charmeleon, Eevee's enthusiasm for battle was much smaller.
After some playful coaxing, Tyson managed to strike a deal between Charmeleon and Eevee: they would take turns fighting Excellent-level wild Pokémon.
Although reluctant, Charmeleon begrudgingly accepted.
This was where Tyson's Charmeleon differed from Ash's Charizard—it was loyal and obedient even if it didn't think the opponent was worth its time. If Tyson gave the order, Charmeleon would still launch its attack without hesitation.
The scorching Ember attack surged forward, sending a wave of heat toward Parasect even before it landed. Undeterred, Parasect countered with Fury Cutter, slicing through the flames with precision.
But Parasect barely had time to react before Charmeleon unleashed a blazing Flamethrower. The fiery column engulfed Parasect, sending it flying backward before it hit the ground with a thud.
A second, well-placed Flamethrower followed, ensuring Parasect was knocked out cold.
Just as Tyson reached for a Poké Ball to capture it, a man emerged from the nearby bushes.
"Hold on! I'm with the Ranger Corps. Here's my ID," the man said, flashing his badge.
Tyson paused, his guard raised but took the time to examine the identification. Rangers were part of the Pokémon League's enforcement branch, specializing in tracking and apprehending Pokémon hunters—people who captured Pokémon illegally to sell them for profit.
While the League had made attempts to stamp out these hunters, two major obstacles remained:
First, the Hunter's Guild. This elusive organization served as a marketplace for illegal jobs, posting requests anonymously and paying out commissions. Attempts to dismantle the Guild had largely failed due to its secrecy.
Second, systemic corruption. Many trainers from impoverished backgrounds turned to hunting to gather resources, as it offered them a way to progress despite their limited means.
"Here's my Pokédex. This should prove my identity," Tyson said, showing the device—a mark of an official Pokémon League trainer.
The Ranger, who introduced himself as Forrest, nodded after verifying the Pokédex.
"Thanks for understanding. There've been reports of Pokémon hunters nearby. Stay vigilant, and if you spot anything suspicious, contact me or the police immediately. I've saved my number in your Pokédex."
"Got it. I'll keep an eye out," Tyson replied calmly, though he couldn't ignore the tension building within him.
After Ranger left, Tyson silently resolved to be more cautious. Pokémon hunters pursuing wild Pokémon often possessed strong teams, and any who managed to evade the Rangers were no ordinary trainers.
Though Charmeleon was at Advanced-level strength, Tyson knew it still lacked the experience and power to stand toe-to-toe with Elite -level Pokémon hunters.
But Tyson wasn't overly worried. With Abra's Teleport as a backup, he had a reliable escape route if things went south.
Continuing toward Pewter City, Tyson focused on accumulating more training points while staying alert for potential dangers.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the forest, a disheveled man cursed under his breath.
"Damn it! How do these League hounds keep tracking me?!"
Adu, a Pokémon hunter, was nursing injuries and barely clinging to survival. After narrowly escaping Ranger's pursuit, he'd paid a heavy price—his strongest Pokémon had already been defeated. Only his Scyther and Ursaring remained.
Glancing toward the edge of the forest, Adu made a decision. If he could reach Pewter City, his knowledge of urban hideouts would allow him to disappear into the Crowds. Staying in the forest, however, left him vulnerable to both wild Pokémon and Rangers.
"Let's move. Stay sharp," Adu muttered to his remaining Pokémon before pressing on toward the city.
Back on Tyson's path, he noticed the increasing frequency of wild Pokémon encounters.
"Looks like we're nearing the edge of the forest. Pewter City should be close," Tyson observed, feeling a wave of relief.
Charmeleon's tail flame flared brighter at the mention of the city. It hadn't forgotten Tyson's promise of a tough opponent to face once they arrived.
Tyson chuckled. "Don't worry, I'll make sure you get that battle. Otherwise, I'm in for trouble."
As they moved forward, Eevee in Tyson's arms suddenly tensed.
"Someone's coming," Tyson muttered. "Quick, Charmeleon, hide!"
Acting swiftly, Tyson climbed into the thick branches of a nearby tree, watching silently as the sound of footsteps drew closer.
