"Why are we going through the forest filled with disgusting bugs?" Misty wasn't feeling comfortable being surrounded by trees. At any moment a wild bug pokémon could jump out of them.
"I have a question Misty?" Ash walked with his hands behind his back. Pikachu was walking next to him.
"Want do you want?" She asked while scrutinizing nearby bushes.
"Bugs can be found everywhere. Cities, meadows and forests like this one. My question is, how do you function?" Misty stopped what she was doing.
"When you say it like that then maybe I'm really overreacting... Ah!"
A caterpie fell down on Misty's head. She grabbed it and chucked it at a tree knocking the poor pokémon out. Ash walked towards it and captured the little creature.
"Well thanks for helping me catch it." He winked. Pikachu made a V sign for victory.
"I'm not a pokémon Ash Ketchum!"
"I'll count it as my blessing that you're not one, ouch! I think I'll call child services on her, Pikachu." Ash rubbed the bump on his head.
"Pika pi." Pikachu knew better than to get between them when they quarreled.
"Weedle."
Suddenly a Weedle showed up. Misty was hysterical, trying to wave it off and telling that it was ugly. The pokémon had tears forming from the corners of its little eyes.
"Come here, Weedle. She won't hurt you with me around." Ash picked it up into his arms and gently patted its long back.
"Weed, Weedle." It calmed down.
"Do you want to come with me little one?" Ash asked with a smile.
The pokémon stared at him and nodded. So Ash took out a pokéball and pressed it against Weedle's head to catch it.
"How can you catch those creepy things." Misty questioned with disgust in her voice.
"We'll have to talk Misty when we get to set up camp later, okay?" Ash sighed at her behavior.
"Hmph." She didn't like his tone.
"Anyway let's keep moving. Bugs are the least of our concern in a forest." He continued walking.
"And what's worst?" Misty was curious.
"Ghost pokémon at night trying to play tricks on travelers and other pokémon. Not too fun to meet in the woods if you ask me. Hoards of murder Beedrills are another way to die. So next time you see any pokémon from that evolution line don't say anything and walk away." Ash looked serious when he said the last part.
Misty gulped. She could have easily made this a disaster if Ash hadn't intervened.
"I'm sorry." She said with remorse in her tone. Ash smiled and told her to walk closer with him. At least then he'd be able to save her from doing anything stupid.
Before night-time they finally have reached a clearing where they could set up camp. Ash started a fire using Pikachu's help setting it off with a little electric shock. Misty went to the nearby stream to get some water to cook dinner. Ash let out his pokémon so they could stretch their wings and legs. The bug pokémon were scared by the menacing look of Spearow.
"Don't worry. Although it looks scary it has a fuzzy side to it. Although a small one." The last piece he said to himself.
The soup was simmering on the campfire. Ash sometimes stirred the pot and tried if it was ready. Misty let her pokémon out in the stream so they could swim for a while. Dinner went by quickly as there was only soup. Ash grabbed his sleeping bag to make him more comfortable.
"I'll keep guard first for the night. You can go ahead and sleep if you want to." Ash offered.
"And let you do something suspicious?" She lowered her brow.
"I'm ten Miss 'I read too many trash romance novels'." He laught at her blush.
At midnight Caterpie and Weedle were sitting on a stump. The former was looking towards the moon. Pikachu walked up to the duo. It asked Caterpie what's going on. It seems it dreamed of evolving into a Butterfree and wished it could fly in the sky. Weedle nodded saying it also had a similar dream. Only that it wanted to be stronger.
-------
Ash was woken up from his sleep by some cries. He quickly stood up and looked for where was it coming from. A Pidgeotto was attacking his bug pokémon.
"I'll show you what happens when something wants to harm my pokémon. Pikachu Quick Attack! Caterpie use your String Shot. Weedle use Poison Sting!" Ash ordered.
Pikachu hit the bird from behind making it land before the two bug pokémon. A web and debilitating shower of poison later Pidgeotto was wraped in a purplish cocoon.
"Pokéball go!" Ash thrown a pokéball at the bird. After a few tense moments the light stopped flickering on the button. The catch was successful.
"You're awesome Caterpie and Weedle. Thanks Pikachu for your timely assistance as well." Ash patted all of his pokémon which brought glee to their eyes.
Suddenly both bug pokemon had an empty stare in their eyes and started shooting webs above them.
"Ash, what's happening!?" Misty watched the scene confused.
"They are evolving!" Ash stared at his pokémon with awe and excitement. This was his first time witnessing the process of evolution.
"Pika pika!" Pikachu cheered for his new friends while waiting in anticipation.
Finally the strings stopped and two pupae appeared.
"Metapod."
"Kakk"
"Caterpie evolved into Metapod and Weedle into a Kakuna." Misty said.
"How are you both feeling?" Ash brought the pokémon into his lap and patted their shells." Although the pokémon weren't expressive you could feel the joy brewing inside them.
"What now Ash?" Misty asked.
"Well I'd like to reach Pewter City as quick as possible. As for the both of you we'll probably have to wait for a couple of days for to you reach your final form." Ash returned the pupae pokémon into thier respective pokéballs.
"Let's grab something to eat and get out of here. We've made too much noise. And I fear for what can come here to check what happened." Ash began packing with Misty following his actions.
The duo continued their journey through the forest. Thankfully Misty remembered to curb her fear of bugs. As there were swarms of Beedrills sometimes flying in the distance. After a few detours they walked into a clearing with a house in it. A samurai looking kid suddenly locked onto them
"I want to battle!" he said with his sword drawn out.
"Sorry, none of us are martial artists." Ash said and continued walking. The young man fell down comicly.
"A pokémon battle you nitwit!" The kid yelled in embarrassment.
"Oh, you should have said so. And stop with that sword of yours. Otherwise someday, someone will call Officer Jenny on your sorry ass." Ash huffed at the ridiculously looking guy.
"Touche. Anyways do you agree?" The man quickly regained back his composure.
"No." Ash replied
"Are you chicken." The young man taunted.
"Nah. I'm just going to run into your house before it's too late." Ash dashed into the cabin while holding Misty by her hand.
"What are you doing Ash?" She asked angrily.
"Beedrills incoming!" The samurai yelled and ran after the duo. After they were inside he shut the door and readied the bug spray.
"We'll have to stay indoors for a couple of hours." He added.
"Thank heavens we made it." Misty relaxed.
"Since we're here how about we play some cards." Ash took out a deck of standard cards and began shuffling.
"Don't see why not." The young man took his helmet off and the games began.
-------
"You're definitely cheating Ash Ketchum." Misty glared.
"Don't hate the player. Hate the game." He smirked.
"Pika pi." It agreed. Pikachu won as many times as Ash did.
"It seems someone here is a sore loser, ouch." That'll teach the samurai not to run his mouth before Misty who hit him with a hammer.
"It seems the swarm has passed. Let's go out." Ash collected the cards back and opened the door.
The meadow was clean of Beedrills. The children got out of the house to catch some fresh air.
"Okay John. We're going on to Pewter City. " Ash and Misty said their goodbyes and continued their expedition.
Suddenly Ash saw something was not right. There was a circle outlined in the road. He grabbed a nearby stick and prodded the dirt. To his surprise the ground caved in.
"Who makes a trap in the middle of the road." Misty asked while laughter sounded from behind the trees.
"Prepare for -." Jessie couldn't yet again finish their motto.
"Run Misty!" Ash yelled and ran away with Pikachu. Misty didn't ask any questions and had done the same.
"Why are the twerps running away?" James asked.
"B,B!?"
"What that Meowth?" The duo asked.
"Beedrills incoming!" The trio jumped in fright and began running only to fall into the trap of their making. Luckily for them the bug pokémon didn't want to dirty themselves with the ground. But they did follow the running duo of Ash and Misty.
"What are we going to do Ash!?" Misty cried.
"Well, it seems we'll have to show them the pecking order. As I'm tired of this bull crap." Ash stopped and turn his cap to the back.
"Pokémon go!" Ash released all of his pokémon.
"Pidgeotto use Whirlwind while you Spearow clobber them with Fury Attack. Pikachu, shock those that get to close to us." The pokémon listened to Ash's instructions. His bug pokémon just continued to use Harden.
"Ash there are hundreds of them!" Misty regretted not having more pokémon on her.
"Don't worry. We've got this!" Ash said but confidence was not on his face at that moment.
Pikachu was getting tired as the Beedrills decided to attack them from all sides. Pidgeotto was still hurting from poisoning and Spearow's enthusiasm for carnage was commendable but it was only one pokémon in the end. The Beedrills finally broke the perimeter and attacked the bug pokémon on Ash's side. Ash and Pikachu tried keeping them away but the Beedrill were unrelenting. Finally one Beedrill that seemed to be the leader hit the pokemon with its Stingers puncturing a hole in both Metapod's and Kakuna's shell. Misty was horrified with this. Anger flashed in Ash's eyes as he jumped the Beedrill and began choking it.
Suddenly, white light flashed and blinded everybody around. The two pupae pokémon began evolving. From the shining light two new pokémon emerged. One which everyone already knew very well, Beedrill. While the other was Butterfree.
"You're alright!" Jumped towards the newcomers hugging them in the air.
"It's time for payback. Butterfree use Stun Spore!"
"Free!" The butterfly pokémon rised into the air and with each wave of its wings clouds of powder swarmed the enemy. Causing the Beedrill swarms to fall down in pain.
Ash's Beedrill took out the leader and pummeled it to the ground with Fury Attack.
"Finally it's all over." Misty dropped down the floor from exhaustion.
"It truly is. What's up Beedrill?" He asked his bug pokémon when it approached him.
"Bee." Ash followed the direction of its stinger.
"You want to become the leader?" The pokémon nodded.
"Well I did say I'll make you strong. And I've kept my promise." Ash said.
"Pika." Pikachu agreed.
"Since you want to stay then you have my blessing Beedrill." Ash clicked the pokéball to release the binding. Beedrill thanked Ash and ordered the swarm to move away.
"Hopefully, it'll make the Beedrill more bearable in the forest. It was almost too close for comfort." Misty said to Ash.
"If it doesn't then we'll come back with a Gyarados to set the record straight." Ash joked back.
After a couple of hours the duo finally saw the end of the forest. They quickened their steps and saw the magnificent view of Pewter City
"This is were our journey to be the very best begins Pikachu." Determination flashed in Ash's eyes.
"Pikachu." It mirrored the emotions his trainer had.
