Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Rhydon on the Waves
The morning by the sea seemed to arrive especially early. After a comfortable sleep at Bill's lighthouse, Gary was awakened by the sea breeze and sunlight.
Rubbing his tousled hair, Gary shuffled into the kitchen wearing his Pikachu slippers and yawned.
He first brewed two cups of cappuccino, creating a leaf pattern with the milk foam.
Next, he prepared buttered toast and a ham salad for breakfast.
Afterward, he opened Bill's storage room and pulled out the top-grade Pokémon food cans.
"Alright, everyone come out!" He casually opened the Poké Balls, and his Pokémon lined up, eyeing the cans in Gary's hands.
Scyther nearly drooled but quickly realized this didn't fit his cool warrior persona. He shut his eyes and pretended to be asleep, acting as if he was dreaming of battle.
Eevee, Growlithe, and Rhydon formed a cute lineup, their tails swaying in unison.
Only Charmeleon behaved normally, sitting on the ground and banging its bowl loudly...
"This rebellious child…" Gary chuckled helplessly at Charmeleon's hungry demeanor.
Each Pokémon received three cans of premium food, along with two bottles of Moo Moo Milk. Growlithe, still recovering from its injuries, got two scoops of protein supplements, while Rhydon received a mountain of various supplements.
As each bowl was placed in front of them, all the Pokémon looked at Gary with eager eyes.
"Alright, everyone eat!" Gary said with satisfaction.
Instantly, the three big eaters—Charmeleon, Scyther, and Rhydon—went into full-on vacuum mode.
Eevee ate elegantly with small bites while occasionally glancing up at Gary with a sweet smile.
In contrast, Growlithe bowed its head and teared up after just one bite.
Can I really eat such delicious food every day? Not only does Gary give me medicine but also brushes my fur and pets my head.
"Awwooo~" Growlithe howled joyfully before diving into Gary's embrace. That intimate feeling was genuine and irreplaceable.
"Alright, alright, eat up; your wounds aren't fully healed yet." Gary gently reassured Growlithe while petting it.
Eevee shook its head and continued eating. It understood this feeling well; when it had just been sent to Gary from the lab, it had been even more dramatic than Growlithe...
My master is a soft-hearted deity! So I must help him achieve his dreams. Little Eevee encouraged itself before continuing to eat diligently.
"Gary~ you made breakfast? You're too kind… Oh my gosh! My premium Pokémon food!? And Moo Moo Milk too! Help! You're all going to eat me out of house and home!" Bill exclaimed as he woke up, rubbing his eyes in disbelief.
"Tsk tsk tsk, what's wrong with eating a little? You're a big shot; you can't be eaten poor!" Gary teased with a laugh.
"You think so? My doctoral stipend isn't that much; being a domestic researcher is tough!" Bill lamented dramatically.
"Stop whining; if your stipend isn't increasing, maybe you should reflect on your research efforts over the past two years," Gary replied with a smirk.
"I just want to ask… you're leaving today, right?" Bill asked resignedly as he slumped over the dining table.
"Uh-huh. I'll let everyone play by the beach for a bit this morning, then we'll head out for Vermilion City after lunch," Gary shrugged.
"Good! Safe travels!"
Whoosh! Suddenly feeling light as Bill tossed him out of the lighthouse along with his chair, Gary's mouth twitched. "Are you looking for trouble...?"
Fortunately, Bill had a change of heart and let Gary back in for breakfast.
After all, when Scyther had its blades at his throat, Bill knew better than to go too far.
After finishing breakfast—perhaps inspired by Gary—Bill dove into his research lab early in the morning to start reviewing literature and writing papers.
Meanwhile, Gary packed his belongings and took his Pokémon down to the beach.
"Alright everyone, let's relax for a bit. After lunch, we'll set off for Leaf Green City," Gary clapped his hands together as he spoke.
Eevee ran around on the beach for a while but soon seemed tired and began digging in the sand.
Before long, only a fluffy tail could be seen adorably wiggling in the sand pile.
Charmeleon yawned lazily, sunbathing comfortably alongside Growlithe, who was also not fond of water.
Scyther, on the other hand, continued to work hard, standing in the tide and attempting to slice through the waves.
To Gary's surprise, Rhydon wasn't afraid of the water at all.
After doing a couple of stretches at the water's edge, Rhydon dove right into the ocean!
"This guy!" Gary stood up in excitement.
The fact that Rhydon could swim indicated its affinity for Water-type moves was definitely not low. This meant it might have learned a move that was quite unconventional for its type!
Sure enough, just as Gary expected! The next moment, a massive wave rose from the shoreline.
Above the wave, Rhydon rode in majestically, looking impressive.
"Wow! You really can surf!" Gary's eyes sparkled. As a swimming Rhydon, its four-times weakness to Water-type moves seemed almost negligible now.
If it also learned Flamethrower... wow, that would create quite a stunning scene!
"Awwooo~!!" As Rhydon approached the shore, its expression suddenly changed.
Gary focused his gaze and realized that Scyther was still within surfing range.
"Whoosh~" Facing the incoming wave, Scyther stood its ground and raised its blades.
A flash of white light surrounded Scyther as it tucked its scythes behind and crouched slightly.
Swish!! In the next moment, a massive crescent-shaped slash cut through the waves and shot into the sky.
Splash! Rhydon landed on its rear end in surprise, looking at Scyther with wide eyes.
Scyther smirked proudly, having successfully executed a sound wave attack with impressive results!
"Well done," Gary said as he approached his two Pokémon. "You both really surprised me."
Rhydon scratched its head sheepishly; it just found swimming enjoyable. Back when it was still a Rhyhorn, it often sneaked off for baths. Now that it had evolved and gained strong limbs, it had confidently developed its swimming skills.
"Whoosh~" Scyther waved its blades. As a blade warrior, Gary had always encouraged it to cut faster and further—and it had succeeded!
Watching Gary praise Scyther and Rhydon made Charmeleon yawn lazily again before turning to Growlithe. "Hey buddy, want to train?"
Growlithe nodded eagerly. The two Pokémon moved apart slightly and began using Flamethrower against each other.
Charmeleon's flames were a deep crimson color while Growlithe's were bright orange.
With the sun enhancing their flames, both Pokémon unleashed powerful bursts of fire that were not to be underestimated.
Boom!! An explosion marked the end of their fiery clash.
Gary nodded in delight. Although Growlithe's level wasn't as high as Charmeleon's, it clearly demonstrated excellent proficiency with fire moves.
Feeling relaxed as he observed his talented Pokémon, Gary sighed contentedly. "It's time to head to the next Gym."
"Eevee?~" Eevee popped out of its sand pit covered in grit. What did I miss?
"Come here for some grooming," Gary said as he picked up Eevee and began his daily bonding routine.
Each Pokémon had different grooming needs—brushing fur, bathing, and polishing their bodies were all great ways to enhance their bond with Gary.
Under the warm sun, Gary sat on the beach gently brushing Eevee's fur while his other Pokémon sat obediently nearby.
Through the window, Bill watched the scene on the beach and couldn't help but nod. "This kid might really win a championship someday."
