Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Old Amber
With Onix down, Gary prepared for Brock's second Pokémon.
"Go, Geodude!" Brock called out, sending his next Pokémon into battle.
"Char!" Charmander eagerly opened its arms, focusing intently on the Geodude.
"Oh, looks like it has a fighting spirit," Brock chuckled. "Geodude, use Rock Throw!"
The move sounded impressive, but in reality…
Geodude picked up some loose rocks from the ground and hurled them at Charmander with all its might!
Smack! Charmander caught the rock effortlessly and crushed it with its dragon energy.
"Charmander, don't hold back; use Flamethrower!" Gary calmly commanded.
"Char!" In response to the earlier attack, Charmander opened its mouth wide and unleashed a torrent of flames.
Boom! The flames engulfed the area, and a charred Geodude fell to the ground, emitting a cloud of black smoke.
Brock felt a cold sweat running down his forehead. Was this challenger really just here to stomp all over him?
"Oh no! I didn't mean to hit so hard… my bad…" Gary scratched his head in embarrassment.
As the smoke cleared, Charmander stood proudly, surrounded by a glow of evolution.
"Is it evolving?" Brock exclaimed in surprise.
"Yes, it's about time after all this training," Gary nodded confidently.
Moments later, the white light faded to reveal a fierce-looking Charmeleon, complete with a single horn on its head and flames dancing at the tip of its tail. Its limbs were now stronger and more muscular.
"What beautiful coloration! It must have received excellent care," Brock couldn't help but admire.
"Thank you for your compliment; this little one has taken quite a bit of my effort," Gary replied with pride.
Although he lost the match, witnessing the growth of challengers was one of the proudest moments for gym trainers like Brock.
With good sportsmanship, he approached Gary and extended his hand for a handshake.
"This is the Boulder Badge, proof of your victory at the Pewter Gym." He produced his badge and formally handed it over to Gary.
"Thank you; I'll gladly accept it." Taking the badge, Gary placed it in his badge collection case as his first badge.
Ding! Task completed. Progress towards Indigo Plateau updated.
Completion rewards issued to system backpack.
After finishing the gym battle and saying goodbye to Brock, Gary finally had time to explore Pewter City a bit.
While it wasn't as large as a metropolis, basic supplies were certainly available.
After purchasing food and potions at a friendly shop, Gary made his way to his last stop in Pewter City: the Pewter City Science Museum!
This museum housed many different types of stones and even remnants of spacecraft.
If scientists were correct, these remnants were likely from the spaceship that brought Clefairy to Earth.
However, Gary wasn't particularly interested in spaceships; he was much more intrigued by the Pokémon fossils displayed there.
After paying a fifty-dollar entrance fee at the front desk, Gary strolled into the museum with his hands in his pockets.
"Excuse me, sir! Would you like me to introduce you to our exhibits?" A middle-aged researcher in glasses and a white lab coat approached him.
"Well, I want to see it myself, thank you." Refusing the enthusiastic staff, Gary went directly to the second floor.
Sure enough, as he looked up, he saw two fossils of Kabuto.
Gary was intrigued and leaned in to take a closer look. These fossils contained the genes of ancient Pokémon.
Soon, as genetic technology matures, they would be restored into living Pokémon.
Currently, in Gary's memory, only Gym Leader Blaine from Cinnabar Island possesses this technology. This old man is not only a master of Fire-type Pokémon but also a very skilled scientist.
Although not every ancient Pokémon has formidable combat power, they have traversed hundreds or thousands of years to reappear in the world. For scholars, this is undoubtedly a romantic process.
Next, Gary saw the fossils of Omanyte and Kabuto.
These are relatively common ancient Pokémon fossils from Kanto.
However, these Pokémon generally have low combat power, and their academic value outweighs their practical value.
"Gary, is that you?" Suddenly, a surprised voice rang out.
Gary looked up and saw a middle-aged man with a square face appear before him.
"Who are you?" Gary asked in confusion.
"Oh, you might not remember me. I'm Spencer, Professor Oak's graduate student!" the middle-aged scholar said excitedly.
"Hello." Gary politely nodded in greeting.
"Hahaha, long time no see! How is Professor Oak's health?" Spencer asked warmly.
"Grandpa is doing well. Thank you for your concern," Gary replied truthfully.
"Are you here to visit?" Spencer continued to ask.
"Yes, I'm on my journey as a Pokémon Trainer and happened to pass by here to see the Pokémon fossils," Gary explained.
"No wonder you are Professor Oak's grandson; you have the spirit of academic research," Spencer nodded appreciatively. "Next year, there will be a fossil revival project in Johto, and if you're interested, you can come and take a look."
"Really? I will definitely go!" Gary's eyes lit up. In Johto, he hoped to see both Lileep and Anorith, both of which had significantly higher potential.
"By the way, follow me." After thinking for a moment, Spencer led Gary to an office.
"This was excavated from ancient times; it's a beautiful stone. I'll give it to you as a souvenir." Spencer took out a piece of yellow amber from the drawer and handed it to Gary.
Gary's eyes widened; it was old amber! What a great item!
"Can I really accept this?" Gary asked uncertainly.
"Of course! This isn't a fossil; I can still make decisions!" Spencer stood tall. "After all, I am the curator here."
"Thank you so much! I really like it." Surprised, Gary took the amber and clutched it in his hand.
Without a doubt, inside this amber was an ancient Aerodactyl, one of the top predators and ancient overlords!
"You don't need to be so polite. I earned my Ph.D. thanks to Professor Oak's careful guidance," Spencer waved his hand, clearly a big fan of Professor Oak.
"It's getting late; I still have to set off for Cerulean City. Uncle Spencer, let's meet again next time." Having received an unexpected surprise, Gary lost interest in continuing to browse the museum and decided to take his leave.
"Alright then! Until we meet again!" Spencer smiled and nodded politely as he escorted Gary out of the museum.
Watching Gary's departing figure, a researcher approached behind him. "Curator, that was an amber from an Aerodactyl! You just gave it away?"
"What do you know? The favor from my teacher cannot be repaid with just one piece of amber. If I can help this kid named Gary, even if I had to give him all my fossils, it would be nothing!" With his hands behind his back, Spencer smiled broadly.
