Chapter 8: Chapter 8: The Designer Is Actually Him!?
"New species..." Megan stood at the doorway, her initial confidence faltering. She'd anticipated encountering a modified version of an existing creature but now faced something entirely novel, a small, mouse-like creature with round, pink-tinged cheeks that seemed to blush.
Glancing over at Ethan Grave, who was calmly cradling one of the adorable, yellow-skinned creatures, she couldn't help but notice how they flocked to him as if he had an innate bond with them. Animals only showed that kind of affection toward someone who genuinely cared for them.
'Maybe Ethan wasn't as reckless as his reputation suggested' she thought.
"Megan, are you going to start the test or what?" an auditor prompted. Megan took a deep breath and finally stepped forward. As she neared, one of the little creatures hopped down from its bed and landed directly in her arms.
Her heart softened instantly as the tiny Pichu looked up at her, chirping, "Pichu, Pichu," with a curious, bright expression. Megan could feel her doubts melting away, replaced by genuine admiration for the gentle, intelligent little creature. 'Cute doesn't even begin to describe it,' she thought. And it's completely harmless.
"Mr. Grave, what are these creatures called? And how old are they?" another auditor asked, marveling at the little creatures.
"They're called Pichu, and they're less than a week old," Ethan answered.
"Less than a week?" The auditors exchanged astonished looks. "And they're already this lively?"
Ethan nodded, smiling. "It's in their genetic design. They're also naturally social, as you can see." An auditor reached out with a toy, which one of the Pichus eagerly grasped, extending its tiny paws with delight.
The five auditors got to work, filling out forms and interacting with the Pichus to observe their behavior. Even Megan, who had arrived with doubts, was now fully engaged, her earlier skepticism dissolving in the face of these charming creatures.
"They're incredibly gentle," one auditor observed, taking notes. "Their aggression level is extremely low, and they respond intelligently to human speech, following instructions and showing interest in interacting with us."
"Yes, and their IQ is exceptional," another auditor added. "They seem to have the cognitive level of a young child. If this is their ability in infancy, they're bound to be extraordinary as they mature."
Each Pichu wore a small name tag, and the auditors tested their recall by calling each by name. Remarkably, each Pichu responded immediately, impressing the team with its attentiveness and responsiveness.
"Everyone, hold on for a moment," Ethan called, breaking the auditors' focus.
They turned to him, curious.
"These Pichus have a unique defensive mechanism called Thunder Shock. It's their basic ability," he explained.
"Thunder Shock?" The auditors looked at one another, surprised.
Electric abilities were rare, even among high-end genetic pets typically developed by large companies with vast resources. The idea that a small company like Pokémon Biotech could design a creature with such a feature was nearly inconceivable.
"Could we see a demonstration?" one auditor asked, stepping back slightly.
Ethan nodded, setting Timmy, who was the Pichu in his arms, on the ground. "Timmy, can you give us a small Thunder Shock?"
"Pichu!" Timmy chirped before releasing a mild spark onto the floor, leaving a tiny scorch mark. The exertion made him give a soft squeak as he finished.
"Great job, Timmy," Ethan praised, patting him gently.
Megan and the other auditors watched, intrigued. Running further tests, they found that each Pichu could control its electrical power, using it only in playful doses that posed no real harm. The Pichus used Thunder Shock solely for defense, showing restraint with their powers.
"Remarkable," Megan noted in her evaluation. "They respond well to commands and tire quickly after using Thunder Shock, which minimizes any potential danger."
Another auditor added, "They're highly social, gentle, and easy to handle. I'm impressed."
The team spent the afternoon conducting further evaluations, ultimately giving positive feedback. While additional tests would be required in later rounds, it was clear the Pichus had left a lasting impression.
As Ethan and James Hunt escorted the auditors out, one of them paused, curiosity piqued. "Mr. Grave, could you share who designed these Pichus? I have to say, I'm fascinated."
Ethan opened his mouth to respond, but James quickly stepped in. "Our Chairman Mr. Grave designed them himself."
Megan and the others looked at Ethan, astonished. This wasn't the reputation they'd heard about; he was proving to be far more skilled and had more vision than they'd expected.
For the first time, some of the auditors began to wonder: had they been misled? Had the scandal with Jerry Fowler been exaggerated?
After all, these Pichus seemed to be an extraordinary leap forward, even more remarkable than the so-called "Spirit Dog" that Jerry had recently introduced to the market.
