Chapter 19: Viridian City
Barry walked across the lush greenery on Route 1, he was going to arrive in Viridian city in a some hours due to the the events of yesterday night.
After arduous training Nidoran was exhausted, he also wouldn't be much use so he let the pokémon rest.
To his side was Pidgey, the pokémon he had tasked with protecting him.
Barry knew he had caught all the pokémon available on route 1 so his only goals today was to arrive at Viridian city before nightfall.
He was navigating with the pokédex subconsciously but his mind worked nonstop, like he had said before he didn't like excess planning; trying to create a counter for every single solution.
One of the reasons he didn't like planning too much was because he believed that if he relied too much on strategies he couldn't cultivate trust among his pokémon; sometimes trust between a trainer and their pokémon was essential, learning to believe in his pokémon despite the situation was needed for mega evolution.
The other reason was simple, life enjoyed messing with you; a human being might as well plan for the future but his plans would fail just because of the unexpected.
Right now he was only working on how the beginning of his battle would start, he would have to leave the rest.
"Ratatta." He heard a sound, subconsciously he looked up and saw his worst enemy.
A Rattata.
Because he focused on the pokédex he wasn't watching where he was going, he had almost fell into this pokémon's trap.
Barry was ready to command Pidgey to end this pokémon but then he saw it's trainer, it was someone he recognized from Gen 1:
Youngster Joey.
It wasn't hard to not recognize him due to his custom blue shirt and brown shorts and yellow cap, it was because there were no mosquitoes in this world, only because of that would someone wear shorts. Or maybe because they won't stay outside more.
Joey approached him without any fear, Rattata following him from behind, it seemed like he had seen his fair share of trainers.
"Are you among those trainers from Pallet Town?" He asked.
"No, I'm from Viridian City." Barry responded. He wasn't lying the original owner of this body was from Viridian City.
Joey looked at him with an expression of doubt, he was unable to discern if the person in front of him was saying the truth.
"But you're coming from Pallet town."
"I'm not a trainer from Pallet town." Barry said, he could feel the clock ticking and if he wasn't fast enough he might not arrive today.
"Hmm. Battle me then." He said calmly.
Barry was about to refuse then he remembered there was something called prize money and grinned widely.
"Alright, you asked for this." He said.
"Since I'm the challenger you have the rights to make the rules." Joey said, the pokémon next to him getting ready.
Barry thought over it for a minute before deciding.
"It will be a one v one battle."
"It's not like I have any other pokémon except Rattata." Joey laughed as he backed away.
'Then my decision was useless.' Barry sighed as he too backed away.
Pidgey and Nidoran looked at each other, Rattata's eyes displaying excitement. Pidgey hadn't forgotten the events that transpired yesterday night, they had caused her to have a slight disdain towards Rattata kind.
"When this rock hits the ground we begin." Joey said before throwing a rock into the sky.
As soon as it hit the ground both trainers began.
"Pidgey, tackle." Barry ordered.
Pidgey descended from the sky horizontally gathering enough force to end Rattata with one move.
Joey saw that, he was not expecting such a reckless move.
"Dodge with quick attack!" He ordered Rattata.
The pokémon glowed in normal-type energy as it awaited Pidgey, Barry seeing this wasn't going to allow himself to get played.
"Transition into gust!" He ordered boldly.
He had never tried something like this but he decided to do it anyway.
In an instant Pidgey stopped her descent but momentum still sent her forward, she began flapping her winds as they blew a strong wind towards Rattata.
Rattata activated quick attack moving with short bursts but in the end it was unable to get out of the range of gust in time before the force of the wind hit.
Rattata was thrown off its feet tumbling, it was unprepared for the current and instead of bracing itself it was trying to escape.
"Rattata hang in there!" Joey shouted.
Hearing its trainers words Rattata tried to stabilize itself, after a moment it succeeded.
Barry knew he had to finish it fast, Pidgey wasn't able to use gust for a long time without losing all of its energy.
"Stop!" He ordered.
Pidgey stopped flapping her wings, the wind being blown stopped suddenly.
Joey couldn't help but wonder if this trainer was dumb, wouldn't it be better to continue the usage of the move.
"Quick attack!"
Pidgey glowed in faint normal-type energy before exploding forward, before anyone could react Pidgey had collided with Rattata.
The outcome was decided and Rattata had fainted.
"Rattata you did a great job, return." Joey said silently as he recalled Rattata.
"You too Pidgey." Barry said as he recalled her.
"Thanks for a great battle." Joey said extending his hand for a handshake.
Barry without thinking much about it accepted it, they shook hands.
"About the prize money." Barry said suddenly.
Joey only looked at him as if he was slooking at an idiot, clearly what had 'prize money' have to do with the battle.
"Since it wasn't an official battle and we didn't agree on it I'm not obliged to give you any money." Joey spoke noticing the sour look on Barry's face.
'All my plans, ruined.' Barry sighed.
"Could you tell me where Viridian city is."
"It's just up ahead, an... some hours walk from here." Joey said.
Barry thanked him and began walking to where he was pointed, he had his pokédex for directions and was just making sure it's coordinates were correct.
As he walked away he wondered why Joey wasn't following him despite the fact that his pokémon had fainted but didn't think too much of it.
His thoughts went back to his earlier encounter with Joey, he had decided that he would need to patch his thinking.
After walking for a while Barry saw something that resembled a small white wall, he moved towards it with purpose and slowly the sign began becoming bigger until he could see it clearly.
Next to the sign were two large white pillars that were 30 meters tall with a statues of Pidgeot's on them.
Barry marveled at the sight and next to it was a sign he in white saying:
Welcome To Viridian City
He rejoiced at the thought of finally reaching his destination after a long day of walking, his pace reduced as he saw a figure there.
She was wearing a blue uniform with a police badge on it white a blue skirt, her green hair protruded out of her cap/hat and next to her was an Arcanine.
The pokémon's hair waved in the wind (where did that wind come from).
His heart almost leapt from his body on seeing the majestic pokémon but he didn't dare bring out his pokédex afraid that it would ruin the moment.
"Wow."
