Chapter 823: CH203 (817), There Be Dragons (2)

Haxorus, whose Dance had been interrupted, evaded the Dark Pulse that Nyx/Umbreon fired at her before releasing a Dragon Pulse in retaliation. What followed was a fire exchange that went on for a few minutes where the two Shinies evaded or blocked each other's attacks while retaliating. Both sides did get hit a few times, enduring various degrees of damage and things only took a turn when Nyx released another Taunt because the previous one was likely to run out at any moment.

Haxorus used the attack lull to rush toward Nyx before being forced to jump over the Thunder Wave that Nyx swiftly discharged at her. Haxorus released a Dragon Pulse as it fell back down, forcing Nyx/Umbreon to deal with that instead of taking advantage of Haxorus' fall. At least that was their plan, but that did not mean that we necessarily had to go along with it. I had Nyx use Quick Attack to power through part of the Dragon Pulse, and while she suffered a bit of damage in the process, she also closed in on Haxorus, who had no time to react as Nyx delivered a rising Iron Tail.

The Iron Tail slammed into Haxorus' lower belly, not only dealing some sweet damage but also propelling it back up, though this time it was against their will. Nyx immediately followed up with a Thunder Wave, and Haxorus had no way to dodge or effectively block the electric surge that was following after it. The plan worked and Haxorus got hit, though that did not mean that Nyx was done. She released a Confuse Ray as fast as she could following her Thunder Wave, though at this point Haxorus was able to react and managed to release a Shadow Ball on Ryujin's command to block the ghostly ray heading for her.

I nearly groaned at their lucky choice since Haxorus seized up moments after she released the Shadow Ball. Had she attempted to block the Confuse Ray with Shadow Claw instead, Confuse Ray would have been able to hit her. Furthermore, after Shadow Ball successfully destroyed Confuse Ray, it continued heading for Nyx, which was lucky for Haxorus since it bought her a few extra moments to recover from her helpless state as she fell to the ground stiff as a rock due to the electric seizure.

I was not planning to let that happen, so I had Nyx jump to the side to dodge the Shadow Ball while targeting Haxorus with Psychic. The telekinetic force of Psychic not only caused pain and damage to Haxorus, but I had Nyx use it like a fly swatter, so the force of the hit also accelerated her fall increasing the impact (damage) of her fall. The moment Haxorus slammed into the ground, a dust cloud rose a few meters to Nyx's right. We obviously did not bother waiting for the dust to dissipate.

No, the moment Haxorus had crashed, Nyx fired a Dark Pulse at the impact point. Dark Pulse caused some more dust to rise when it hit the area, but the wind generated by the move sped up the dispersing of the dust, so we were able to see an empty battleground a few seconds later. I immediately ordered Nyx to jump the moment I saw that Haxorus was missing even before I noticed the hole in the ground. Nyx followed through without hesitation, but mere moments after her feet left the ground, the earth under her broke open, revealing Haxorus who was jumping/coming at her with her axes/tusks gleaming with what I was sure was Guillotine.

I hastily ordered Nyx to use Protect, and it was only thanks to her earlier jump that she managed to erect the Protective shield before Haxorus' Guillotine could hit her. Tusk met shield and Protect managed to hold out for a few seconds before the axe-tusk slashed/broke through the shield, but due to the fact that both Nyx and Haxorus were airborne those few seconds of resistance were enough to save Nyx from the Guillotine. The clash between the axe-tusk and the Protect shield propelled Nyx further away from Haxorus even as she managed to cut through the shield, so despite Haxorus breaking Nyx's Protection, she failed to actually hit Nyx.

Everyone, myself included, finally breathed out at the moment, and we all watched as Nyx retaliated with vengeance after her narrow escape. Even I was surprised when I saw what happened next since this was not something we had worked on. When Nyx began to charge a Hyper Beam, I nearly frowned since it would immobilize her for a few seconds afterward, but considering Nyx and Haxorus' current positions, I conceded that she could likely afford it.

Things took an unexpected turn when after having charged the Hyper Beam, Nyx did not release it but actually began to release and infuse dark energy usually generated by her Dark Pulse into the Hyper Beam, visibly turning the yellowis/light orangish energy ball darker and darker until it was black. The whole process took merely a few seconds, and while it looked like Nyx would lose control a few times, causing the energy ball to explode in her face, she managed to control it long enough to release the black Hyper Beam at Haxorus, who had noticed what Nyx was doing and released a Dragon Pulse at her since there was not much else she could do while falling back to the ground.

Nyx's BHyper Beam first clashed with the Dragon Pulse that had come pretty close to her, and cut through it like a hot knife cut through butter before continuing toward Haxorus. The BHyper Beam hit Haxorus, who had tried to block it with Dragon Claw. The resulting impact pushed Haxorus, who at this point had nearly landed anyway, feet first into the ground, and for a few moments Haxorus actually managed to hold off the BHyper Beam, before losing the struggle, causing the move to properly slam into her before causing an energy explosion.

The crowd went wild as the dust cloud rose, and I kept an eye on the explosion point while also watching Nyx helplessly fall back onto the ground with a thud because she was unable to move due to the Bhyper Beam she released. Her landing caused a small dust cloud to rise as well, and for a moment all I could do was wait for the dust to disperse. Ryujin tried to order her dragon to use Rest before following up and adding that she should fire a Dragon Pulse at Nyx if she couldn't use Rest. Yet, no Dragon Pulse came from the bigger dust cloud, so people expected to see a sleeping dragon once the dust cleared.

Due to the difference in size that happened nearly simultaneously even though Nyx's dust cloud rose later. Nyx was lying on the ground staring toward Haxorus, who was on one knee, obviously struggling to not fall over and definitely not Resting. A hush fell onto the audience as it became clear that Haxorus had not fired off the Dragon Pulse because she was struggling to not fall and not because she managed to use Rest. Haxorus growled at Nyx, who, while panting from exhaustion, was slowly struggling to her feet as the side effects of her BHyper Beam waned.

Nyx in return to that growl just yipped once, which was her telling Haxorus that she had put up a good fight, before firing a Dark Pulse at her. Nyx's attack hit and bowled over the half-kneeling dragon, who despite Ryujin's encouragement remained on the ground. The referee waited for a few seconds before declaring Haxorus unable to battle and Umbreon the victor. Nyx proudly lifted her head at that declaration and enjoyed the audience's cheers. I let her enjoy her moment since she had definitely earned it.

Nonetheless, after I let her bask in it for a few seconds, I addressed the referee and announced that I was withdrawing Nyx, whose head snapped in my direction at those words. "You were incredible but you've done more than enough. We both know that you're running on fumes right now," I told her as I looked her in the eyes. "Don't try to deny it, I can see your legs twitching, wanting to give in," I followed up when it looked like she was about to argue with me.

Nyx stared at me for a few more moments before she released a sigh and slowly trotted to my side as the audience erupted in cheers again after having quieted down when I made my declaration. The referee announced Nyx's withdrawal as I kneeled and hugged her. I whispered some more praises before I finally recalled her. I then gave the referee a thankful nod due to him allowing us the moment through his actions. "Thank you for waiting," I then said to Gym Leader Ryujin who had already recalled her Haxorus, but had watched us without rushing us.

"It's fine," she said with a slight shake of her head. "Your Umbreon earned that moment,' she followed up and I could hear that she was genuinely impressed. "Yes, she did great," I agreed with a smile. *chuckle* "I had not expected Ebony to lose," Ryujin let out after releasing a dry chuckle. "Beating two of my dragons with one of your Pokemon; You and your Pokemon are as impressive as I hoped you'd be," she followed up with a grin. "Thanks. We try," I replied with a smile of my own, which had her release a short laugh before giving me a smile/grin that was downright predatory.

"I'm glad that you did not disappoint. A little warning, this one is going to be one of the replacements I made just for you. You'll be facing the father, not the son," she declared while reaching for a PokeBall on her belt; "You better bring out your best or your next pick won't last long," she advised ball in hand, and I did not miss the implication that we would still lose anyway. I was not the only one who understood that, and there were some cheers and chants coming from the audience at her declaration.

Listening to her, I pretty much concluded that she was going to be sending out one of her platinum stage Pokemon next, but we had beaten Stage 6 Pokemon before so I just gave her a calm and confident smile before I took out Ryujin/Gyarados' OceanBall. Feeling a bit amused by the idea of sending out Ryujin against Ryujin, I could not help but tease her. "Let's see if your dragon can stand up to my Ryujin," I said while raising the OceanBall to draw attention to it. The audience's reaction was mixed, while Ryujin laughed a bit.

"So you keep a fellow Ryujin hidden in your pocket," she joked before turning serious. "Let's see if your dragon can stand up to mine," she followed up before nodding at the referee, who began to countdown without giving me a chance to reply. We simultaneously released our dragons, and while Ryujin appeared on my side of the battlefield, a Kingdra appeared on Ryujin's side. The crowd went wild and I could hear screams asking what kind of Gyarados that was.

Meanwhile, an intimidating aura spread from Ryujin due to the activation of his Intimidate ability and Alpha Predator talent. It affected Kingdra who had been about to initiate a Rain Dance, forcing it to release its own aura to resist the effect of Alpha Predator, revealing its (low) platinum stage prowess in the process. I was happy that Ryujin's opening move was using his talent instead of using Rain Dance and that the combination of Intimidate and Alpha Predator was able to surprise Kingdra enough to interrupt its opening move since I was certain that it had Swift Swim as an ability.

Letting Kingdra double its speed in exchange for stronger water moves would not have been a good trade for us, especially since water moves were pretty ineffective against Kingdra.
