Eyes of Warning
Kael, Jin, and Tarek knelt side by side, the weight of the air around them pressing down like an invisible hand. The room was vast and dark, lit only by the faint glow of flickering torches set into the ancient stone walls. The silence was deafening, broken only by the sound of their own breathing, shallow and uneven. Kael's heart raced in his chest, every instinct screaming at him to stay down, to avoid looking up at the being before them.
But despite his fear, despite the overwhelming pressure forcing him to lower his gaze, Kael couldn't shake the growing curiosity gnawing at him. His instincts warned him to stay still, but something deeper—some undeniable pull—urged him to lift his head. His muscles trembled as he fought the urge, but eventually, he gave in.
He raised his eyes slowly, first catching sight of the guardian's feet—if they could be called that. They seemed to shimmer, as though not entirely of this world. His gaze climbed higher, taking in the strange armor, the intricate details etched into every surface, symbols that seemed to shift and change the longer he stared.
Then, Kael's eyes met the guardian's.
The moment their gazes locked, a blinding light erupted from the guardian's eyes—golden and radiant, almost burning into Kael's vision. His body seized up, and he felt the overwhelming force of the guardian's presence consume him. His vision blurred, the world around him twisting and spinning as though it were being pulled apart at the seams. A sense of weightlessness filled him, as if he were being torn from reality itself.
Then, in an instant, it was over.
Kael gasped, his breath catching in his throat as he blinked against the sudden brightness of daylight. He was no longer in the temple. The eerie, ancient chamber had vanished, replaced by the familiar sounds of the forest. Birds chirped in the distance, the breeze rustling the leaves around them. Kael's heart pounded in his chest as he tried to steady his breathing, his mind reeling from the abrupt change.
Jin groaned beside him, clutching his head. "What the hell just happened?"
Tarek, ever stoic, stood up quickly, scanning their surroundings. "We're outside... but how? That portal... it's gone."
Kael struggled to his feet, wiping the sweat from his brow. His legs felt like they would give out any second. The image of the guardian's glowing eyes burned fresh in his memory, and he couldn't shake the weight of it. "I... I don't know. One minute we were inside, and now..."
"What was that place?" Jin interrupted, his voice sharp with disbelief. "And what the hell was that army coming toward the temple? Did you see them?"
Kael nodded slowly, his thoughts racing. "Yeah... I saw them. But I don't think we were supposed to be there."
Tarek frowned, folding her arms. "That's putting it lightly. That place wasn't meant for us. We got lucky. Whoever—or whatever—that guardian was, we're fortunate to be out of there alive."
Jin paced back and forth, still shaking off the shock. "Alive? Man, that was insane! I don't know about you guys, but I've seen a lot of weird things in my time, and this... this tops the list."
Kael remained silent, the gravity of what just happened sinking in. The guardian's presence, the way its eyes had burned with golden light... it wasn't just power. It felt like a warning.
Jin suddenly stopped, a thought striking him. "Tarek, look what I found!" He pulled out the ring he had picked up earlier, its glint catching the sunlight.
Tarek's expression shifted from surprise to curiosity as she reached for it. "That's my ring! But how...?"
Jin grinned, his excitement bubbling over. "When I picked it up, it did this weird thing and then—boom!—we were pulled into that portal together!"
tarek furrowed his brow, crossing his arms. "What are you saying? There's nothing special about it. It's just a ring. I've had it for as long as I can remember, but I have no idea where it came from."
Jin shook his head, clearly unconvinced. "It's got to mean something. How else would it pull us into that place?"
Tarek studied the ring closely, a thoughtful look on her face. "Maybe it's more than we realize. It's always been a part of me, but I never knew it could do that."
Kael shrugged, still skeptical but intrigued. "Well, whatever it is, we need to focus on getting to the academy. We're supposed to be together, and that's where we're headed."
Tarek nodded, her expression serious. "Agreed. We should keep moving. Whatever that was... it's best we don't dwell on it."
Kael glanced at Tarek, a question bubbling to the surface. "How did you end up inside that portal anyway?"
Tarek hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath. "I was just roaming around, exploring the forest. You know how it is... I love to wander. Suddenly, I saw this bird, shimmering and divine. It felt like it was calling to me, so I followed it."
Jin leaned in closer, intrigued. "maybe its the bird we saw when we left the village and then what happened?"
Tarek continued, her voice steady but laced with a hint of fear. "When I got closer, I saw these men in hoods standing beside the portal. They were torturing a beast—chopping its leg slowly, torturing it. I was horrified and tried to run away, but one of them noticed me."
Kael's expression turned grave. "What did they do?"
Tarek's voice shook slightly. "They grabbed me. I thought I was going to die right there. But then, something strange happened. It felt like something pushed me into the portal—maybe it was the ring, or maybe some kind of divine intervention. I just remember stumbling through and suddenly finding myself in that temple."
Jin's eyes widened. "So you were just trying to explore and ended up in a nightmare!"
"Pretty much," Tarek replied with a wry smile, trying to lighten the mood. "But then you guys showed up. I thought I was trapped forever."
Kael nodded, feeling a mix of sympathy and admiration for Tarek's bravery. "I'm glad you made it out. We all did."
Jin clapped Kael on the back again, a grin on his face. "Speaking of getting together, did you hear about that village that turned to dust overnight? This guy right here—" he gestured toward Kael—"is the only survivor! They call him 'Ashborne' now."
Tarek raised an eyebrow, her interest piqued. "Ashborne? That's... intense."
Kael felt a mix of pride and discomfort at the nickname, but he shrugged it off. "It's just a name. What matters is getting to the academy."
Tarek nodded, her expression serious. "Agreed. We should keep moving. Whatever that was... it's best we don't dwell on it."
Jin clapped Kael on the back. "Tarek's right. No point overthinking it. Let's just keep moving forward. That's what we're good at, right?"
Kael nodded, though his thoughts lingered on the guardian. He wasn't ready for whatever lay ahead, but he'd made it this far. He would keep moving, no matter what.
As they walked, the tension in the air began to lift. Kael took a deep breath, filling his lungs with the crisp forest air. It felt good to be outside again, even with the memories of the temple still fresh in his mind.
"What do you think that guardian was?" Tarek asked, breaking the silence. "Do you think it was a protector of the temple, or something more sinister?"
"I don't know," Kael admitted. "But whatever it was, it felt powerful. And the way it looked at us... it seemed like it wanted to warn us, but I couldn't understand what it meant."
Jin chuckled nervously. "Let's hope it doesn't come looking for us again. I'm not ready for another round with glowing eyes."
"Right?" Tarek replied, her tone lightening. "I think I'd rather face a dozen beasts than that."
The trio shared a laugh, easing the lingering tension as they navigated through the forest. As they walked, Kael found himself feeling more at ease with his companions. Their shared experience had forged a bond between them, one that he felt would only grow stronger as they faced the challenges ahead.
"So, what's our next move?" Jin asked, looking between the two. "We need to get to the academy, but do we have any idea how far we have to go?"
Tarek glanced around, taking in the familiar sights of the forest. "I've been here before. I think if we keep heading east, we'll reach the main path that leads to the academy. It should be a few hours' walk."
Kael nodded, feeling a sense of purpose. "Then let's get moving. We've got a long journey ahead of us, and I want to be ready for whatever comes our way."
With renewed determination, the three of them pressed onward. The forest was alive around them—birds chirping, leaves rustling in the gentle breeze. As they walked, Kael couldn't shake the feeling that their adventure had only just begun. The guardian, the portal, Tarek's narrow escape... it was all part of something bigger, something they were yet to fully understand.
And as they ventured deeper into the woods, the weight of their destinies began to take shape, pulling them toward an unknown future, one that held promise and peril in equal measure.
Together, they set off into the forest, the golden eyes of the guardian still burning in Kael's memory, as the journey continued.
