Paragon of Death

Chapter 20

Chapter 20: Chapter 19: Dumb Hosts

0″You are simply stating a general problem, you are yet to give me a solution. My cover is a hundred percent danger free, why would I endanger myself by joining forces with you, who is a suspect and probably wanted by one of the three. Great Duke families?” Damon asked as he threw a piece of steak into his mouth. He didn’t seem moved by Cyrus’ words one bit.

“Hundred percent? I beg to differ. How do you think I found you? Your little experimental death magic leaked a little death aura and you may be unaware but death has a strong stench. If an amateur human mage like me can sense it, do you think more prominent and powerful mage families there wouldn’t sense it too?” Cyrus said coldly.

Only then did a frown bloom on Damon’s face. He didn’t seem pleased with what he just heard. Instead, he felt completely stupid for ignoring such a fact. Cyrus didn’t pick him out now to speak to him because he could tell. It was a gamble and Damon fell for the trick.

The possibility of other family heads who brought their kids suspecting is high, what he can’t explain is how to deal with this issue. So far he has also been showing only destructive impulses, especially in the last class.

These nobles won’t do anything until they are sure and when they are sure not even Daniel Ross can save him.

“This is troublesome” Damon remained calm and spoke before throwing another piece of steak into his mouth.

His actions left Cyrus confused as he expected Damon to be restless and eager to solve the problem.

.....

“You are not bothered?” Cyrus couldn’t help but ask.

“Of course, I’m bothered, you can’t tell?” Damon answered with the same expressionless look on his face.

“I can’t tell but it must. Be a Death magic thing so I won’t push further. So what do you think?” Cyrus said calmly.

“How does joining hands with you, guarantee my safety?” Damon asked as he picked up his cup of water and drank a little bit.

“The life and death mages are usually influenced by their guardian spirits to battle each other. In history, all encounters between. The two led to a fierce fight without hesitation. If we can spend more time together, the suspicion may fade” Cyrus said.

<> Death agreed. Immediately.

“I know you must be wondering why we are not hating each other. But the guardian spirits are desperate now... they can’t afford to lose more hosts so they have no choice but to keep their personal businesses out of this” Cyrus explained but Damon yawned.

“I guess I will be fine” Damon says casually, leaving Cyrus confused.

“What?” Cyrus couldn’t help but ask.

“It’s obvious the previous guardian spirit hosts were dumb as fuck. Why would I hate you because a voice in my head said so? If they weren’t smart enough to tackle such problems then how do they expect to survive? Do you think I completely believe everything a voice in my head named death says? That’s just stupid” Damon was done eating, so he stood up.

“Wait, You should know the death magic affects your personality... the guardian spirits have more influence over you than you think” Cyrus said hastily.

“They only have as much as you give.... I’m this way because I lost everything important to me to this cruel world. I’m like this because all I genuinely want is to destroy not build. When you experience true despair, you will understand what I’m saying” Damon said before walking away without looking back.

‘I need to be more careful with this death magic’ Damon muttered in his mind with a frown.

........

A week was given for all recruits to pick their registered classes and Damon was the first to turn in his registration slip. As expected, he simply wanted to be a War mage. After his talk with Cyrus, he became more observant about the look people had on their faces whenever he was around.

Luckily outside contempt, he couldn’t find any other notable facial expressions. A week passed and during that week, Damon focused on practicing his magic. In his grimoire now, he had only three spells, yes he was joking when he told Daniel Ross he had enough. He just didn’t want the man to worry.

The first was the darkness spell which he called dark spikes, which allows him to solidify a person’s shadow and use it to impale them and hold them to a position. The stronger the person is, the more difficult it is to control their shadow.

The second is the wind element spell which he called, Wind steps. Surrounding his feet with his power of wind, he can make his footsteps noiseless while swift as well. All of these are just basic wind manipulation pushed to a higher degree.

Finally, the final one was with his fire element which he called Purgatory strings. From his fingertips, countless fire strings emerge at high intensity but with the size limited to that of a string. The length can be altered by how much mana Damon is willing to pour into it and with his strength he can only stretch it up to five meters in length.

This can be considered the toughest spell he created and the most tasking to use since it requires constant concentration.

Swoosh!

Damon looked like he was running in the wind as he circled around countless dummy targets with blazing red eyes. His palms were thrown open as countless strings emerged from his fingertips, as he clawed forward like a wild beast!

Surprisingly, the haystack dummy was instantly set ablaze while its body was split into numerous parts!

Bang!

Damon kicked the wind, flying into the air while his body spun violently. If one failed to look closely they would fail the notice the orange strings swirling around him directly

Swoosh!

His body blew past the next dummy like the breeze and it suddenly lit up in flames with its limbs served.

Huff!

Damon exhaled and gasped for air rapidly. His body seemed extremely hot and his lips felt dry. The consequences of using a fire ability that doesn’t just leave your body but stays have its own side effects. He also seemed to have run out of mana, after maintaining the fire strings for more than three minutes straight.
