Chapter 90: Arranged marriage for Lakeman
In Marineford, Sengoku's office was shrouded in a heavy silence as he processed the report from Borsalino. The details were troubling, and he couldn't help but feel a surge of unease.
"What do you mean? Could you describe it clearly, Borsalino?" Sengoku's voice was steady, yet there was a hint of perplexity.
"Marshall, I really don't know," Borsalino responded, sounding as laid-back as ever, yet there was an underlying seriousness.
"Saint Lakeman changed the name of the kingdom after just a day of arriving. On that same day, CP7 eliminated all the nobles in the kingdom, along with many civilians. Since then, he hasn't left the palace for weeks."
Sengoku's frown deepened. "And now you're telling me Nico Robin is his slave?"
"That's right. I was ordered to train her, just like Hancock," Borsalino replied, a slight hint of boredom creeping into his tone. "Marshall, you know I don't like troubles. Tell me quickly what should I do?"
Sengoku sighed, his mind already spinning with the implications.
"Train her for now. I'll discuss it with the Five Elders and get back to you." After hanging up the call, he turned to Tsuru, who had been silently observing the conversation. "What do you think about this matter, Tsuru?"
Tsuru, the ever-composed Chief of Staff, adjusted her posture slightly before responding.
"Isn't it already clear, Sengoku? Despite his strength, which rivals that of an Admiral, Saint Lakeman remains a Celestial Dragon at heart—indulging in decadence and showing a particular lust for beautiful women."
She paused, her eyes narrowing slightly as she continued. "Just look at his entourage. Boa Hancock, Stussy, Nico Robin, Shirley, and his head maid, Lily. Each one of them is a beauty capable of toppling nations. As for what to do, just ask the Five Elders. They're the ones who will ultimately decide how to handle this."
Sengoku nodded thoughtfully, knowing Tsuru's assessment was spot-on. "Yes. I'll need to get their stance on this. Until then, we monitor and proceed carefully."
Sengoku's expression tightened as he picked up the exclusive Den Den Mushi, reserved for direct communication with the Five Elders. He knew this call would be delicate, but the situation with Nico Robin was concerning enough to warrant it.
Marijoa, atop the Red Line.
The Five Elders were in the midst of a discussion, analyzing a report they had recently received from Stussy, when the phone began to ring.
— Buruburu... Buruburu…
Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, the eldest of the group, answered, his tone already irritated. "What's the matter, Sengoku? Don't you have work to do instead of disturbing us at every turn?"
"Saint Saturn, it's about the Devil's Child, Nico Robin," Sengoku began, maintaining his calm despite the reprimand. "She has become Saint Lakeman's slave. I'm concerned she may have ulterior motives." He detailed the situation and expressed his concerns, hoping to gain some guidance.
However, what followed was a barrage of scolding from Saturn.
"We already know about it. We were going to inform you of our decisions tomorrow, but as the Marshal of the Navy, you lack even a little patience. If this continues, we may have to reconsider your position."
Sengoku clenched his jaw, feeling the sting of the rebuke but remaining silent.
"What conspiracies can a child like her truly have? Can she defeat an Admiral? There is nothing to worry about when it comes to Saint Lakeman."
The scolding didn't end there. "What a Celestial Dragon does is not your concern, nor is it your place to meddle. Remember that. Cancel the wanted order for Nico Robin, and do not disturb us unnecessarily. We are not as idle as you."
Saint Saturn's voice carried a cold finality, while the other four elders merely observed, offering no comments or objections. After a few more sharp words, he hung up the phone, leaving Sengoku staring at the silent receiver, frustration and unease churning within him.
He now had his orders, but the sense of unease still lingered.
Sengoku's mind was still swirling with frustration as he picked up the Den Den Mushi once more. He quickly called Borsalino back, his tone more curt this time. "Borsalino, continue training Nico Robin according to Saint Lakeman's instructions. Make sure not to cause any trouble."
After Borsalino acknowledged the order, Sengoku hung up the phone and let out a roar of exasperation. "Damn Five Elders! Damn Celestial Dragons! Scums of the world!"
— Bang!
The door to his office burst open, and in walked Garp, laughing heartily. "Haha, Sengoku, did I just hear you scolding the Five Elders and a Celestial Dragon?"
Without waiting for a response, he grabbed a packet of senbei from Sengoku's desk, pouring the contents into his mouth and chewing loudly.
— Crunch, crunch
"Gaaaarp! Give my senbei back!" Sengoku shouted, grabbing Garp's collar and shaking him, his earlier frustration now redirected.
Meanwhile, Tsuru, who had been quietly observing, let out a sigh. Despite the lighthearted banter, her eyes reflected concern. She knew the situation was more serious than Sengoku and Garp's antics could hide.
Marijoa, atop the Red Line.
Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, having just finished his call with Sengoku, turned to the other elders with a scowl. "Saint Nusjuro, your junior from the family, is quite troublesome."
Saint Nusjuro let out a chuckle. "Haha, isn't it right to be arrogant when young? A genius has every right to be arrogant. Besides, arrogance and a sense of superiority run in our blood. Whether it's the Celestial Dragons, the Knights of God, or even us Five Elders, who among us isn't full of pride?"
Saint Shepherd Ju Peter nodded in agreement. "Indeed. Let him enjoy the world. As for Nico Robin, she poses no threat to us. There are others who can read ancient texts, but history and ancient weapons are no danger to us."
"Those O'Hara scholars were fools," Ju Peter continued. "Had they studied the Poneglyphs in secret, we might have turned a blind eye. But they dared to do it openly, defying the World Government's authority. So, we destroyed them as a warning. A pity, but necessary."
Saint Marcus Mars interjected, his tone thoughtful. "Ancient weapons aren't easy to activate. They require bloodline descendants of the Nefertari family to awaken them. Nefertari Vivi was just born a month ago. Why not arrange a marriage between Lakeman and Vivi?"
"It's a sound idea," Saint Nusjuro mused. "Since she was born so close to the time of the prophecy, her bloodline must be purest, ideal for activating the ancient weapons. But do you think Cobra would agree?"
Saint Topman Warcury smirked, his tone sinister. "How could he refuse us? We could waive the heavenly tribute for two years for Alabasta and promise that the child between Vivi and Lakeman would inherit his kingdom. That should be more than enough incentive."
Saint Saturn glanced at Saint Nusjuro. "It's your family, so you should be the one to inform Cobra."
"Certainly," Saint Nusjuro replied, reaching for the Den Den Mushi.
Alabasta Kingdom, Royal Palace.
Inside the palace, King Cobra watched quietly as his infant daughter, Vivi, giggled in Queen Titi's embrace. The serene moment was interrupted as Igaram hurried in, carrying a Den Den Mushi and whispering softly into Cobra's ear. "Your Majesty, it's a call from Marijoa."
— Buruburu... Buruburu…
Cobra excused himself, leaving the room to take the call.
"Congratulations, Cobra, on the birth of your daughter," Saint Nusjuro's voice echoed through the receiver.
"Thank you, Saint Nusjuro, for your kind words," Cobra replied, his tone respectful yet cautious.
Without wasting time, Saint Nusjuro got straight to the point. "Cobra, our family has produced a great genius, one who has achieved the strength of an Admiral at just ten years old. What do you think about arranging his marriage with your daughter, Vivi?"
Cobra hesitated, his heart pounding.
"May I have some time to consider this?" he replied nervously.
"Of course. Take your time. But consider this: if the marriage is agreed upon, we will waive two years' worth of heavenly tribute for Alabasta. We've heard of the droughts plaguing your land. We could also provide a solution for your kingdom's water shortage."
As the conversation continued, Queen Titi quietly approached, listening in without interrupting. Her face was calm, but her eyes sparkling filled with excitement and greed.
