The two soldiers escorted the middle-aged man into the lounge inside the base.
"Sir, please wait here for a while. Once Byakuya, our base commander, returns, I'll notify him," one of the soldiers said.
The middle-aged man, though blind, seemed incredibly perceptive. He smiled kindly and replied, "Understood. Thank you, gentlemen."
"It's no trouble at all. Please rest for now," the soldier responded. "We need to return to patrolling the perimeter."
Just as they were about to leave the lounge, one soldier paused as if remembering something. He turned and asked, "By the way, we didn't catch your name, sir."
The man answered with a calm smile, "I am Issho."
Meanwhile, King, the All-Star of the Beasts Pirates, was flying at high speed toward G-5 Base.
His mind was racing. Since Byakuya wasn't at the base, there wouldn't be anyone present capable of threatening him.
Additionally, there were Marine officers within the base secretly working under Doflamingo, who were supposed to recognize him by using a specific code phrase upon his arrival.
Given the timing, King assumed that Kaido must already be engaging Byakuya in battle, and it shouldn't take long for Byakuya to be eliminated.
Yet, despite the apparent lack of obstacles on his mission, the prolonged absence of Doflamingo made King uneasy.
As King approached G-5 Base, he folded his massive wings and dived downward, flames enveloping his body and leaving a fiery trail in the sky.
He resembled a meteor streaking through the air. In the lounge, Issho seemed to sense the unusual presence and instinctively furrowed his brow.
"Hey, what's that streak of fire in the sky?"
"Could it be a meteor?"
"It sure looks like one!"
However, when they saw the trajectory of the "meteor," one soldier exclaimed, "Whoa! That meteor seems to be heading straight for our base!"
"Everyone spread out and keep your distance!" another soldier shouted. "Inform Vice Admiral Vergo immediately!"
The base quickly descended into chaos. Vergo himself arrived at the scene, watching the fiery object approach with a hint of concern.
However, his concern wasn't about the potential destruction of the base.
What worried him was that he had lost contact with Doflamingo about half an hour ago.
No matter how many times he tried to reach him, there was no response.
This raised the possibility that something unexpected had happened.
If Byakuya managed to survive, all of Vergo and Doflamingo's efforts would have been in vain.
As everyone waited, they noticed something unusual about the "meteor."
Upon closer inspection, it began to resemble a bird. The more seasoned soldiers, who were used to the chaos of the New World, soon realized the truth.
"That's no meteor—it's King, 'The Wildfire'!" one shouted.
The soldiers quickly recognized the figure: the holder of the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Pteranodon, and one of the Beasts Pirates' most powerful All-Stars.
"Be on your guard! It's King!"
Faced with the sudden appearance of such a dangerous pirate, there was initial panic among the soldiers.
But they soon rallied and began firing their weapons, sending a barrage of bullets toward King as he descended.
Unfortunately, the bullets were useless against King's Pteranodon form.
Even when some of the higher-ranking officers imbued their bullets with Armament Haki, they only left faint white marks on King's body.
The soldiers' faces grew grim. Without Vice Admiral Byakuya present, they had no hope of dealing with someone of King's calibre.
As the highest-ranking officer in the base, Vergo stepped forward. "Everyone, retreat outside the base. I'll hold King off and buy you time," he ordered.
"Vice Admiral Vergo!"
The soldiers were deeply moved by Vergo's selfless gesture. Tears welled up in their eyes, and Vergo's image as a leader rose dramatically in their hearts.
Vergo, meanwhile, kept a composed expression, but inwardly, he was elated.
While he wasn't capable of defeating King, his other identity ensured that King wouldn't attack him.
Once the soldiers retreated, it would be easier for Vergo to contact King directly.
This was the perfect opportunity to build his reputation among the troops.
Once Byakuya was eliminated, Vergo believed his chances of becoming the next base commander of G-5 would increase significantly.
Amid the evacuation, the two soldiers who had escorted Issho suddenly remembered him.
"Wait, that man named Issho is still in the lounge!" one exclaimed.
With King's immense strength, the base was unlikely to survive intact. The lounge was positioned in an area that could easily be destroyed.
If Issho truly had any connection to Commander Byakuya, they couldn't let him be harmed.
The two soldiers quickly ran back to the lounge.
"Issho, sir, a pirate is attacking the base! Please come with us to a safer location," one said urgently.
Issho looked puzzled and asked, "A pirate?"
"You're Marines, aren't you? If there's a pirate attack, shouldn't you be capturing him?" Issho asked calmly.
One of the soldiers forced a bitter smile and replied, "I'd love to, but the pirate who's coming is the top commander under the Beasts Pirates, one of their All-Stars."
"With our strength, trying to capture him would just be suicide."
The other soldier chimed in, "Exactly. Without Vice Admiral Byakuya here, we're completely outmatched."
Issho paused for a moment, his expression turning serious. "If that's the case, perhaps this old man can help your base get through this crisis."
"???" The two soldiers were utterly baffled, their faces filled with question marks.
"Issho, sir, this isn't the time for jokes," one said nervously.
"If it weren't for Vice Admiral Vergo holding him off to buy us time, we wouldn't even have had a chance to warn you."
"Are you saying that your Vice Admiral is risking his life to hold off King so you can escape?" Issho asked, his tone thoughtful.
"Yes, exactly. That's why we need to leave quickly."
Issho sighed, a mix of admiration and resolve in his voice. "It seems the spirit of this Marine base is quite commendable."
"In that case, I have even more reason to lend my assistance."
The training grounds were now empty, with all the soldiers evacuated. Only Vergo remained, standing firm as King descended from the sky.
Before King even landed, Vergo called out, "Caesar isn't here."
King, in his human form, quickly assessed the Marine standing before him.
It didn't take him long to realize that this Vice Admiral must be Doflamingo's mole within the Marines.
King raised an eyebrow and said with mild surprise, "I didn't expect Doflamingo's infiltrators in the Marines to reach the rank of Vice Admiral."
"It seems he has ambitions far greater than I thought."
Vergo gave a strained smile. "Lord King, the Young Master has already given me instructions. I can take you to find Caesar right now."
Maintaining a safe distance, King waved dismissively. "Not so fast. First, tell me where Doflamingo is."
"Shouldn't the Young Master be assisting Lord Kaido in dealing with Byakuya?" Vergo asked, confused by King's question.
"But when Byakuya arrived, Doflamingo and the Donquixote Family were nowhere to be seen. Don't tell me there's an ambush set up here at G-5 Base," King replied suspiciously.
He couldn't rule out the possibility that Doflamingo intended to exploit Caesar's artificial Devil Fruit technology to further his power, potentially using it as leverage against the Beasts Pirates.
King's stance shifted slightly, his body language signalling readiness to strike at any moment.
Vergo, now visibly tense, hurriedly explained, "That's impossible! We wouldn't dare deceive the Beasts Pirates."
"Lord King, you must believe me. Caesar is being held in the prison right now. If you don't trust me, I can personally take you there."
"Handing Caesar over should be enough to prove the Donquixote Family's sincerity."
"Apologies, but I prefer taking the initiative," King said coldly as he lunged forward, grabbing Vergo's shoulder.
From King's perspective, holding Vergo hostage would be a strategic move.
Even if there was an ambush, the Marines and Donquixote Family would hesitate to act recklessly with Vergo in his grasp.
After all, placing someone as clean and highly ranked as Vergo in the Marines must have cost significant time and resources.
Vergo hadn't expected King to be this cautious, resorting to action at the slightest doubt.
Reacting quickly, he flicked his wrist, a meter-long bamboo staff sliding from his sleeve.
In an instant, the staff was coated in Armament Haki, turning a deep purple-black.
"Clang!"
The staff managed to block King's strike, but King sneered, "Not bad. But you're still far too weak to stand against me."
With a burst of strength, King's grip crushed the Haki-coated staff, snapping it in two.
He surged forward, leaving three deep claw marks across Vergo's chest.
Pieces of Vergo's uniform fell to the ground as King disdainfully flicked them away.
"You'd better surrender," King said in a mocking tone. "I'd rather not accidentally kill you. As long as I leave this base with Caesar, I'll let you live."
Vergo gritted his teeth, enduring the pain. "I'm the strongest person in this base right now, and even I couldn't last a single round against you."
"How could we possibly have planned an ambush against someone like you?"
King, ever cautious, hesitated for a moment. He didn't want to waste more time.
Furthermore, his earlier attack nearly killed Vergo, yet no one had intervened. This suggested that there might truly be no ambush.
"Fine," King said finally. "I'll trust you this once. But if there's any foul play, I'll make sure your true identity is exposed."
"Both you and the Donquixote Family will be finished."
"Rest assured, Lord King. I guarantee there won't be any problems," Vergo replied earnestly, masking the turmoil in his mind.
