Chapter 626: Setting Sail !!! (Final Chapter)
Late night.
The galaxy stretched out, stars shimmering as the full moon hung high in the sky.
Moonlight poured over the sea, creating ripples of sparkling light.
Seven warships slowly emerged from the darkness on the sea's surface.
Ahead of these seven ships, the island's harbor was ablaze.
From a distance, it looked as though the entire island was bathed in the crimson rays of twilight.
Several ships docked in the harbor had already been consumed by flames. Their wrecks, half-submerged in the water, flickered with the remnants of the fire, while many bodies lay scattered around the wreckage.
Clearly, the enemy's attack had come too suddenly, and these people hadn't had time to react.
Amid the burning harbor, a large three-masted ship was anchored.
Against the backdrop of the burning harbor and the charred vessels, this ship appeared like a giant beast amidst the flames.
On the dock in front of the ship, boxes were piled up one after another.
It was evident these contained the most valuable goods from the town.
Next to these boxes, a large group of people were bound with ropes, their hands tied together in chains.
Among them were mostly women and children. There were no men or elderly among them.
Some looked terrified, others were at a loss, and some were weeping.
Standing nearby were dozens of pirates, armed with cutlasses and flintlock guns, their faces cold and expressionless.
From time to time, they cast greedy glances at the boxes on the dock, while more were being brought in from afar.
"This haul isn't bad. I wonder how much we'll get this time," one crew member muttered to his companion, his eyes on the large boxes.
"Hah, don't get your hopes up. No matter how much we take, the big share never reaches us. The captain, first mate, and bosun will take their cut first. What do you think will be left for you?" another sailor, cradling a flintlock, scoffed from where he sat on a pile of loot.
Though they always earned something from raiding ports, compared to what the higher-ups received, they were practically beggars.
"Damn it, why do we risk our necks for just a few scraps while they get everything?" the first sailor grumbled, feeling a surge of resentment at the thought of the captain and crew officers' share of the loot.
But it was only a fleeting feeling of dissatisfaction. After all, any of the officers could crush him with ease.
"Hey, I wonder if the brothers will get a turn with those women…" he started to say, but was immediately met with scornful looks from his comrades.
Nowadays, with the slave trade being ruthlessly suppressed by the World Government, it was almost completely wiped out on the seas.
That made slaves more valuable than ever. These "goods" could be sold for a high price, and the officers wouldn't let them touch a single one of them.
In the past year, the underworld had been practically purged. Apart from the women of Pleasure Street, almost every other business had been wiped out.
The Loan Shark King, Lu Feld, was turned to ash by Sakazuki's magma in Red Port. The other kings of the underworld were now hiding like rats.
One of the former titans of the underworld, Big News Morgans, had survived by aligning himself with Nicolas and merging the World Economy News Paper into the World Government, fully legitimizing his business.
Using his intelligence network, Morgans frequently tipped off the World Government about black market dealings.
As a result, his head now had a bounty of 5 billion Berries on the black market, almost as much as the former Pirate King, Roger.
But Morgans, aware of this, had moved to live near the New World Government's headquarters.
In the beginning, a wave of assassins had been tempted by the high bounty, but after several hundred top-tier killers were wiped out—along with three major assassination organizations—the wave of attempts finally stopped.
"Curse that Nicolas. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't have fallen this low."
"Hey, look over there! Is that a ship?"
One of the pirates rubbed his eyes and squinted at the sea, speaking uncertainly to his companions.
"Confirmed. The target is at the harbor ahead."
As a flock of crows gathered on the deck, Karasu's voice reached Sakazuki and Kuzan.
"Got it."
With a cigar in his mouth, dressed in a red suit, Sakazuki stared at the harbor ahead, his eyes cold with killing intent.
Kuzan wasn't surprised by Sakazuki's menacing aura.
Clearly, the world had entered a new dawn, and remnants of the old era needed someone like Sakazuki to completely eradicate them.
On the harbor, the incoming warships had also been noticed.
The crew quickly loaded the slaves and supplies onto the ship. Any goods they couldn't move in time were abandoned.
In the past, they had almost always fled from the Navy. Now, with the New World Government Navy, fleeing was their only option.
Before, the Navy had been a major force at sea, but now they had even deployed admirals to hunt pirates.
From the lookout at the top of the three-masted ship's mast, the observer caught sight of Sakazuki and Kuzan standing on the deck of the warship. He froze in shock.
"It's Akainu and Aokiji—"
Before he could finish his sentence, a white line shot across the sea toward the harbor.
In an instant, the ship and the surrounding waters were frozen solid.
Gulp…
Many pirates swallowed nervously, cold sweat pouring down their foreheads.
Even without the lookout saying anything, they already knew who had arrived: Admiral Aokiji Kuzan and Admiral Akainu Sakazuki.
Some pirates even dropped their weapons, losing the will to fight.
Against other Navy forces, they might have stood a chance. But against two admirals? All they could do now was hope for a less painful death.
However, many of the pirates, shocked at first, rushed toward the chained slaves on the deck. For them, holding hostages increased their chances of survival.
"These guys are too naïve. Kuzan, is this alright?" Sakazuki glanced at the pirates attempting to take hostages and spoke to Kuzan.
"Yeah, it's no big deal."
Kuzan disappeared in an instant. When he reappeared, he was already on the deck of the three-masted ship.
"Stay back! We have hostages!" one of the pirates yelled desperately as they held their weapons against the prisoners.
"My, my, what a scary threat," Kuzan muttered.
In a flash, he vanished again. When he reappeared, the deck was filled with statues of ice, each one a frozen pirate.
The captured slaves were stunned, unsure how to react.
"You're safe now," Kuzan said.
Many began crying tears of joy and hugged one another.
But one child glared at Kuzan with a look of anger and sadness.
The intensity of the child's gaze made Kuzan pause.
"Are you mad at me?" Kuzan asked, squatting down to look the child in the eye.
"Why did you come so late? If you had come earlier, everyone… everyone wouldn't have died!"
Tears streamed down the child's face.
Kuzan fell silent, staring at the burning harbor behind him.
"I'm sorry," he finally said.
Maybe if they had arrived sooner, the tragedy could have been avoided.
"Kuzan, do you now understand how foolish your old ideals were?" Sakazuki said as he walked up behind Kuzan.
"Kid, if you want revenge, grow up and join the Navy. Wipe these scumbags off the sea," Sakazuki said before walking to the frozen pirate captain.
His magma hand melted the ice, revealing the drenched pirate beneath.
"Who were you planning to sell this batch of slaves to?" Sakazuki asked coldly.
"The nobles of the Kingdom of Rabdaya."
"Good to know."
With that, Sakazuki's hand glowed with magma, turning the pirate captain to ash.
"Karasu, handle the cleanup and report this to Sengoku. Kuzan, let's go. Next stop: the Kingdom of Rabdaya."
Sakazuki strongly agreed with one thing Nicolas had said: "No buyers, no business."
If they cut off the source, the slave trade would die on its own.
With the Navy and the World Government's powerful crackdown, the Great Pirate Era was coming to an end.
The underground world, ruled by monopolistic "emperors" of illicit trade, has also met its end.
Dragon, witnessing all this, felt conflicted. He realized that he had always seemed to live in Nicholas's shadow. His own ideas often had shortcomings that Nicholas was quick to point out and fix. However, Dragon soon accepted this reality. After all, as long as the world became a better place, that was all that mattered.
With the successful return of the first team sent to the moon, thanks to the technology support from Vegapunk, Dragon also acknowledged that Nicholas was right—productive power dictates everything. The resources discovered on the moon alone could sustain the entire world for over a hundred years, and that was just from the areas they had explored. The oceans of this planet were enough for people to live comfortably, and with the moon's development, the future could indeed be one without war, where everyone could live happily.
With the moon exploration report, Dragon formally proposed the initiative for off-planet exploration at the World Council. It was also on this day that, under the joint announcement of Dragon and Sengoku, the legendary shipwright Tom from the Fishman tribe officially launched the "Sea Train Project," a plan to connect the world.
"Can such a thing really be done?"
People all over the world, watching the live broadcast through image-transmitting snails, turned to look at the figures on the high platform, representing various nations and races.
Now, for people everywhere, it seemed that dawn had truly arrived, and the darkness that once enveloped the world had entirely dispersed.
"If the Red Line that once divided the seas has been opened, then what else is impossible?"
"Yes, it can definitely be done!"
With the downfall of the World Government, the Celestial Dragons, and the royal families that had oppressed the people, the once suffocating taxes vanished. Many people now felt hopeful for the future. Without excessive taxes taking away their hard-earned income, fewer were willing to become pirates. At this moment, the era of great pirates truly came to an end.
On the high platform, Dragon and Sengoku exchanged glances, smiling as they watched the cheering crowd. They finally felt the purpose of their existence and the cause they had fought for all their lives.
As time passed, people witnessed a miracle. Sea trains began connecting the once isolated islands of the world. Steel behemoths belching smoke raced across the seas, and the entire world was united.
Time flew by, and soon, people on the sea trains were marveling at the world's transformation. Families reunited, and friends embarked on new adventures. Among them, a group of familiar faces cherished the peace they had fought for.
Far across the Grand Line, on the Red Line at Twin Capes, the giant whale Laboon reunited with his old friend, Brook, as a beautiful, tearful melody filled the air.
In the distance, aboard the Sovereign of the Seas, Nicholas and his crew prepared to set sail. "Full speed ahead!" Nicholas declared, his eyes on the horizon.
"Next stop: the stars and beyond!"
