Chapter 29: Chapter 29: When the Chunin Exam is in Progress
"Lee, you're too slow. You were almost late," TenTen complained as Rock Lee finally joined them in classroom 201.
"Sorry," Lee apologized sincerely without offering an explanation.
The tension in the room grew as everyone anxiously awaited the exam to begin. Suddenly, the classroom door swung open, drawing everyone's attention as Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke entered. Under the scrutiny of so many seasoned ninja, the trio hesitated nervously.
Fortunately, their classmates—Ino, Shikamaru, and others—quickly approached to greet them, forming a united front as the "newcomers" in the Chunin Exam.
"Why are they arriving so late?" TenTen wondered aloud.
"I just went to test their strength," Lee answered with a sly grin.
"Oh? And how strong are they?"
Before Lee could elaborate, a ninja named Kabuto Yakushi approached Naruto and the others, offering to share information about the Chunin Exam. He revealed his set of "ninja info cards," which could provide detailed data on other candidates.
Sasuke, intrigued, asked Kabuto to show him the cards for Rock Lee, Gaara, and Kirito.
The data on Rock Lee's taijutsu specialization stunned Sasuke, with an impressive number of completed missions backing it up. Gaara's record, particularly his flawless success rate, left everyone in awe. But when they saw Kirito's near-perfect stats and mission history, the room fell silent.
"Is this what a 'monster' looks like?" Sasuke thought, clenching his fists in frustration.
"Unbelievable. Is he even human?" Shikamaru muttered, his expression serious.
"Kirito, are you really this strong?" Naruto asked, surprised. He had always seen Kirito as kind and unassuming, never suspecting such hidden strength.
"It's not just them," Kabuto explained. "Everyone here represents the elite of their respective villages. This year's joint Chunin Exam has drawn the best of the best."
Hinata looked down, feeling dejected. "I don't feel confident anymore…"
"What are you saying?" Ino scolded her.
Naruto, sensing the pressure, clenched his fists. His body trembled slightly, but Sakura noticed and tried to comfort him.
"Naruto, don't be so nervous—"
"Ah!" Naruto suddenly shouted, drawing the attention of the entire room. "I'm Uzumaki Naruto! I won't lose to any of you, got it?"
Ino facepalmed. "What's he doing?! Is he trying to provoke everyone?"
"Don't blame me!" Sakura shot back.
As the classroom descended into chaos, TenTen watched from a distance with a smile. "These newcomers are really something, aren't they?"
"Yeah, they're full of energy," Lee admitted, looking slightly embarrassed by Naruto's outburst.
"Unfortunately, they're in trouble now," Kirito remarked.
At that moment, three Otogakure ninja launched an attack aimed at Kabuto. Though Kabuto managed to dodge, his glasses shattered, and he collapsed to his knees in pain.
"What's going on?" murmured several candidates. They had clearly seen Kabuto evade the attacks, yet he appeared to be seriously injured.
Before the situation could escalate, a group of Chunin examiners entered the room. Leading them was a scarred man in a black trench coat and ninja hat.
"Quiet down, you brats!" the man barked, his voice commanding respect. "I am Morino Ibiki, the examiner for the first Chunin Exam."
Ibiki explained the rules of the written exam. Each candidate started with 10 points, with deductions for wrong answers and cheating. If one team member scored zero, the entire team would be eliminated. A final question would be revealed after 45 minutes.
As the exam began, Kirito used his Byakugan to copy answers effortlessly, finishing within minutes. He sat back, waiting for Naruto's performance to unfold as it had in the original plot.
When the final question—a test of resolve—was announced, Naruto stood up, slammed the table, and declared his determination to face any challenge. His words inspired the remaining candidates to persevere, thwarting Ibiki's plan to eliminate the majority. In the end, 26 teams advanced to the next round.
Ibiki then revealed the scars on his head, explaining the psychological resilience required to be a Chunin.
Just as everyone began to relax, the window shattered, and a figure burst into the room. A large banner unfurled, reading: "Second Exam Examiner, Mitarashi Anko, Has Arrived!"
"Don't get too comfortable!" declared the energetic woman in a net shirt and khaki trench coat. "I'm Anko Mitarashi, your next examiner! Follow me to the next stage!"
Her dramatic entrance was met with silence, the candidates too stunned to react. Realizing this, Anko adjusted her tone and grinned. "For the second exam, I'll eliminate more than half of you. Details will follow tomorrow—dismissed!"
On the way back, TenTen chatted with Kirito. "Kirito, what do you think the next exam will be about?"
"Probably a survival battle. Bring extra food—we might not have supplies," Kirito advised.
"Got it. I'm always prepared," TenTen replied confidently, spinning a pair of scrolls on her fingertips.
"Oh! Does that mean we'll have to fight other teams for survival?!" Lee exclaimed, visibly excited.
"Basically," Kirito said with a nod. "But before we do anything tomorrow, I want to check something. There's someone I recognized during today's exam, and I want to confirm it."
"Are they strong?" TenTen asked.
"I'm not sure yet."
"Okay, we'll go with you."
The next morning, they gathered at Training Field 44—the Forest of Death. The foreboding atmosphere, filled with towering trees, insects, and lurking predators, set everyone on edge.
Anko explained the rules: teams must survive for five days, collect both "Heaven" and "Earth" scrolls, and reach the tower at the center of the forest. With dangers from the environment and other candidates, the test would challenge their skills and resourcefulness.
After submitting their consent forms, Kirito's team received a "Heaven" scroll and headed to Entrance 41.
"Kirito guessed it right," TenTen said, holding the scroll.
"Oh! My youth burns brightly!" Lee exclaimed, clenching his fists.
"Lee, don't forget—we're finding that person Kirito mentioned first," TenTen reminded him.
"Of course!" Lee agreed.
As the gates opened, the trio disappeared into the dense forest. Leaping between the trees, Kirito activated his Byakugan, focusing on a red-haired figure in the distance.
