Chapter 94: Chapter 92: Strong emotions
The Uchiha compound buzzed with anticipation as clan members gathered in the main hall. At the centre of attention stood Kenji Uchiha, his small frame barely containing his pride. Saya and Akira, his peers, were standing behind him, their faces mixed with mild jealousy and curiosity.
The imposing and expressionless figure of Fugaku Uchiha, the clan leader, dominated the room. His presence seemed to fill every corner, his stern gaze sweeping over the assembled crowd like a physical force. The two most talented members of the clan, Itachi and Shisui Uchiha, stood behind him.
Fugaku's eyes scanned the gathered assembly before focusing on Kenji's father.
"Congratulations," Fugaku's deep voice carried a hint of pride. "Your son has awakened the Sharingan at an impressively young age."
Fugaku words shocked everyone present. Akira's eyes widened at this announcement. She was the most talented of her generation, but she lost in the race of awakening the Sharingan.
Kenji's father beamed, his chest swelling. "Thank you, Lord Fugaku. The fact that Kenji awoke Sharingan at the age of six, even before Itachi and Shisui did, shocked me as well."
Fugaku's eyes narrowed slightly, recognising the subtle comparison. He understood the underlying message—Kenji's father was positioning his son as a potential future leader of the clan.
A chorus of impressed whispers rippled through the crowd. Fugaku nodded and said, "Indeed. He awakened even earlier than myself. I haven't heard of anyone awakening earlier than this in the Uchiha records of the past 100 years."
From the corner of his eye, Fugaku noticed Akira's clenched fists. The girl, hailed as the genius of her generation and ranked top in the Ninja Academy's entrance exam, was visibly tense. Her Sharingan had yet to awaken, and the praise being heaped upon Kenji was clearly grating on her nerves. Fugaku made a mental note of her reaction, filing it away for future consideration.
Fugaku went on, speaking for the whole clan when he said, "Your name will be added to the records and remembered. We expect great things from you, Kenji."
Kenji straightened his posture, a mix of pride and nervousness evident in his young face. "I won't let you down, Lord Fugaku," he declared, his voice cracking slightly with emotion.
Fugaku's eyes narrowed slightly. "Tell me, Kenji," he said, his voice low and measured, "under what circumstances did your Sharingan awaken?"
The boy hesitated, his earlier bravado faltering. He glanced around the room, acutely aware of all the eyes upon him. The silence stretched thick and oppressive as Kenji wrestled with his pride and the truth. Although he did not want to tell them, he was unable to lie in front of such authority.
Taking a deep breath, he began, his voice barely above a whisper, "It... it happened when I confronted Ryu Hamura at the academy entrance before class."
Fugaku's mind raced, his thoughts hidden behind an impassive mask.
"So, he disobeyed my order and went up to confront him," he thought. "It was expected given his wild and irate personality. Since he is still a young child, I cannot punish him for this small infraction in front of others, especially after his achievement. Instead, I will probably ask his father to discipline him at home."
A hushed silence fell over the room. Fugaku leaned forward and demanded, in a somewhat steely voice, "What happened?"
Kenji swallowed hard, his pride warring with the truth. "I... I attacked him," he admitted, his voice barely audible. "But he beat me without even trying. I couldn't land a single hit."
The silence in the room grew heavier, charged with a mix of shock and disappointment. Kenji, unable to bear the weight of their stares, quickly added, his voice rising with desperation, "But it was because of that moment—because of the anger that my Sharingan awakened!"
Fugaku processed this information, his expression unreadable. Internally, he felt a hint of satisfaction. "Jealousy, anger, pride—these strong emotions have always been the catalyst for our clan," he thought. "Perhaps this Ryu Hamura will serve as a worthy rival to push our younger generation further."
Aloud, Fugaku said, his voice carrying a note of approval, "Now that you have awakened your Sharingan, you will be taught how to use it in actual battle. With proper training in using your Sharingan, you'll perform better in your next encounter. I hope the next time around you do better."
Kenji nodded eagerly, relief washing over him. His eyes shone with renewed determination, the earlier shame forgotten in the face of this new challenge.
Fugaku's gaze then shifted to Saya, who had been watching the proceedings with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. Her usually mischievous expression was replaced by one of nervous anticipation.
"Saya," Fugaku addressed her, his tone measured. "I've heard from Akira that you've had some interactions with this Ryu Hamura. What can you tell us about him?"
Saya felt a flutter of nervousness in her stomach, acutely aware of Akira's sharp gaze upon her. She took a deep breath, steadying herself before speaking. "Ryu is... different," she began cautiously, choosing her words with care. "He's an orphan, recently adopted. He was very ill not long ago, nearly dying before an experimental treatment saved him."
Fugaku's eyebrows raised slightly at this information. Saya continued, "Because of his brush with death, he's set on becoming a medical ninja. He seems... driven, in a way that's different from most kids our age."
As Saya spoke, Fugaku's mind raced with possibilities. A boy with exceptional physical abilities, yet holding back in tests? A near-death experience driving him towards medical ninjutsu? There is more to this Ryu Hamura than met the eye.
"Interesting," Fugaku mused aloud, his voice carrying a hint of intrigue. "It seems this boy might be wasting his talents in the medical field. However, we mustn't jump to conclusions."
He turned his attention back to the gathered clan members, his voice taking on a commanding tone. "I think I have asked it before, but I will say this again. I want all of you, especially you younger ones, to keep a close eye on Ryu Hamura. Observe his skills, his habits, and the people he associates with. Report anything unusual to me. And Kenji, unless it is an official spar, do not confront him again."
Kenji nodded and said, "Yes, Lord Fugaku."
Despite his words, he was secretly dying to fight Ryu once more in order to atone for his previous humiliating defeat. but he now has to wait for official spar between academy students.
Kanji thought, "His fighting style was very strange. He was dodging my attack by hair's breadth. I should better analyse his moves with Sharingan before confronting him again."
Fugaku kept his eyes fixed on Saya, his thoughts concealed behind his calm exterior. "Her mother did not awaken the Sharingan when she was alive, and her father was an outsider," he mused. "Her chances of awakening the Sharingan are very low. If she can bring such talent into the clan, it will be better for the future generation."
As the meeting dispersed, Akira lingered behind, her eyes fixed on Kenji as he and others started leaving. The awakening of his Sharingan had shifted the dynamics within their generation of the clan, and she was determined not to be left behind. With a steely resolve, she approached Fugaku, her voice steady despite her inner turmoil.
"Lord Fugaku," she began, her eyes burning with determination, "I want to intensify my training."
Fugaku saw the fire in her eyes and gave her a mixed look of approval. "Your dedication is commendable, Akira," he said, his voice carrying a note of warning. "But remember, the Sharingan awakens in its own time. Focus on honing your other skills for now."
As Akira bowed and turned to leave, her mind already planning her next training regimen, Itachi stepped forward. His usually stoic face showed a hint of concern, a furrow in his brow betraying his unease.
"Father," he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper, "this focus on awakening the Sharingan... is it wise to put so much pressure on the children?"
Fugaku's expression hardened, his eyes flashing with a mixture of determination and something darker. "It is necessary, Itachi," he said, his voice brooking no argument. "The strength of our clan depends on the power of our eyes. We must nurture every advantage we have."
Itachi nodded, but the concern didn't leave his eyes. As he watched the younger clan members file out, their faces a mix of determination and anxiety, he couldn't help but wonder about the path they were all walking. The weight of the clan's expectations seemed to hang heavy in the air, a tangible force shaping the futures of these young Uchiha.
Outside the compound, under the cover of night, Saya found herself lost in thought. The mystery of Ryu Hamura consumed her mind, overshadowing even the momentous events of the clan meeting. Three things had been sown in the minds of the young Uchiha present in the meeting: ambition, rivalry, and destiny.
