Chapter 308: Chapter 308: Can't the Meeting Be Held at a Different Time?
Uchiha Fugaku couldn't directly strengthen his connection with Shinki, so he continued his efforts with Uchiha Mikoto.
Taking two bottles of juice from the refrigerator, he handed one to Mikoto and gestured for her to sit down:
"There haven't been any conflicts within the Uchiha recently, right?"
Uchiha Mikoto understood what Shinki wanted to know. She shook her head but sighed:
"I'm not sure what the patriarch and elders discussed, but the elders seemed furious. I don't know the details."
As someone not directly involved in family decision-making, Uchiha Mikoto lacked the authority to participate in such discussions.
It seemed that Uchiha Fugaku had started making moves.
When the dust settled, how many of those elders clinging to their outdated authority would remain?
Among all the family patriarchs, Uchiha Fugaku was arguably the most ruthless. Compared to the likes of the Hyuga clan, where change was a struggle often left unfinished, Fugaku took decisive action.
Shinki briefly thought of the Hyuga clan's rigid traditions and sighed. How long could their passion for reform truly last?
A Visit from Kushina
"Sister Mikoto!"
When Kushina returned home, she spotted Uchiha Mikoto and excitedly rushed over. Her exhaustion from training vanished as she held Mikoto's hands and chatted endlessly.
Ever since Mikoto joined the police force, their meetings had become rare. Hyuga Mie had no official duties, but Kushina trained tirelessly, feeling guilty about taking too much of Mikoto's time.
After some lively chatter, Kushina pulled Mikoto toward the room.
"It's time to eat!"
Shinki called out when dinner was ready.
The two emerged, but Kushina sprinted straight to the dining table. Meanwhile, Mikoto's face was red, and her eyes avoided Shinki's gaze.
Shinki wondered what Kushina had said. Could it be that the two had discussed something... unusual? Otherwise, why was Mikoto so shy?
Deciding not to press the issue, Shinki turned and went upstairs. If he stayed, Mikoto might not even dare to lift her head.
"Sister Mikoto, don't act like this. If Shinki sees, he'll scold you for sure," Kushina teased in a low voice once Shinki left.
"I... I didn't mean to, but you said such strange things!" Mikoto stammered, flustered.
Kushina grinned mischievously. "It's all Sister Tsunade's fault. She's always keeping Shinki busy at night. It's no wonder she often has insomnia!"
Mikoto was speechless.
Nine Tails Observes
Within the sealed space, the Nine Tails shook its head. Human emotions were bewildering—and irrelevant. It thought, What does this have to do with a tailed beast?
Still, as long as Kushina maintained her training, the Nine Tails could tolerate her antics. That day, however, it suppressed a simmering frustration:
"Shinki, just you wait! Once Kushina finishes her special training, you'll face the consequences!"
Dinner Shenanigans
After dinner, Mikoto, overwhelmed by Kushina's playful teasing, hurriedly excused herself. Kushina's relentless energy left Mikoto struggling to respond.
Later that evening, when Tsunade returned, Shinki recounted the day's events. Initially, Tsunade seemed ready to lie down and rest, but upon hearing Kushina's antics, she leaped from bed and stormed downstairs.
Kushina's scream soon followed:
"Ow! Sister Tsunade, stop! I'm sorry! I won't say it again!"
"Who taught you to spout nonsense?!" Tsunade demanded.
"You did!" Kushina cried. "You're the one who keeps disturbing my sleep at night! I was just repeating—ow! Okay, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!"
Listening to the chaos below, Shinki smirked. Letting a little girl run her mouth deserved consequences.
A Midnight Summons
As Konoha settled into nighttime quiet, save for the bustling commercial district, a shadow approached Shinki's residence.
In the darkened courtyard, a puppet's green, glowing eyes opened momentarily. Seeing the Hokage's escort team, it retreated back into the shadows.
"Shinki, the Hokage has summoned you for an important meeting," one of the guards announced.
Shinki appeared moments later, stepping lightly to the ground.
"Can't the meeting be held at a different time?" he muttered, clearly annoyed.
Interrupted from sleep, he followed the guards reluctantly to the Hokage's office.
An Urgent Discussion
The Hokage's office was serious, with an unusual attendee: Nara Shikakin. As the Jonin leader, Shikakin's presence signified the importance of the matter.
Shinki arrived last, curious about the grave atmosphere.
"What's going on? Why the serious expressions?"
The Third Hokage handed him a scroll. "The Snake has sent a message. A delegation from the Sand Village, led by their Kage, has entered the Land of Rivers. They're ready to negotiate."
Shinki unrolled the scroll, scanning its contents.
"The Sand Village has finally reached its limit. Negotiating is expected. But they don't want to come as losers, do they?"
He set the scroll aside.
"If they refuse to acknowledge defeat, how can they convince Konoha to negotiate? What can they offer? They're too impoverished to entice us with anything worthwhile."
The question hung in the room as the high-ranking officials pondered their next move.
