Chapter 125: Chapter 125
"Targeting the oases, burning everything, reshaping the terrain, and cutting off underground water sources—that would devastate the Sand Village and enrage the Daimyo of the Wind Country."
"It would be more painful for them than losing a limb," Tsunade noted.
While such actions would undoubtedly lead to many casualties in the Wind Country, Shinki felt no sympathy for his enemies.
Yes, the civilians of the Wind Country were innocent—but so were the people of the Fire Country. Many had been displaced, lost their livelihoods, or even seen their loved ones killed due to the Sand Village's raids. If the Sand Village could be so ruthless, why should he show mercy to their civilians?
He couldn't spare pity for others at the expense of his own people.
Striking the oases would surely infuriate the Daimyo of the Wind Country. Once the war was over and the Sand Village was defeated, that same Daimyo would likely impose harsh conditions on the village.
The idea of losing the war had never crossed Shinki's mind. Konoha's resources and foundation were on a completely different level compared to the Sand Village. Konoha could outlast them in a drawn-out conflict. The Sand Village, with its limited resources, wouldn't withstand a prolonged stalemate.
"Your idea is excellent. I'll talk to the old man about it..." Tsunade began to rise but thought better of it and sat back down. There was no need—The Third Hokage was already more anxious than she was. Let him stew in his worries for a bit.
"So, what are your plans now? Back to Konoha Hospital?" Tsunade asked with a teasing grin.
"No way," Shinki replied lazily, sprawling on the sofa. "I only went to the hospital out of necessity. You really think I want to be a full-time medical ninja?"
Tsunade swatted him lightly in mock annoyance. "What's wrong with being a medical ninja?"
Shinki's goals hadn't changed. He had started at Konoha Hospital to avoid drawing attention from the more powerful clans and the higher-ups. Now that he had made his mark, he had no desire to return there for work.
He preferred jobs that required minimal effort for maximum benefit.
Besides, Konoha Hospital was currently overseen by Koharu Utatane, and Shinki had no interest in dealing with her. He especially didn't want to give her any leverage over him.
"Alright then, take your break. If you need something else to do, come to Anbu," Tsunade offered, understanding his reluctance.
"I'll see where Nawaki's run off to," she said, standing up.
"Alright, you go ahead. I'll take a walk."
After parting ways with Tsunade, Shinki wandered through the village streets, enjoying the lively atmosphere. He eventually found himself outside Ichiraku Ramen. The sight of the familiar shop sparked his interest, so he stepped inside.
"Welcome! What can I get for you?" Teuchi, the young and energetic owner, greeted him warmly.
"A bowl of bone broth ramen, extra meat and noodles, with a side dish," Shinki replied.
"Coming right up!"
Shinki settled into a chair, watching Teuchi work. It was interesting—unlike other successful businesses that expanded with increased demand, Ichiraku Ramen remained a small, cozy spot, always bustling with customers but never growing beyond its humble size.
As he played with a kunai out of boredom, Shinki thought about bringing the little blonde-haired boy to try the ramen someday. That kid and his future son, Naruto, were destined to be loyal patrons.
"One order of pork ramen, please," said a new customer who had just walked in. Shinki scooted over to make room, only to recognize the newcomer.
"What a coincidence, young clan leader," Shinki greeted.
"Indeed," Hyuga Hiashi replied, adjusting his clothes before sitting down.
Shinki almost chuckled at the sight. Once, Hiashi had been known for his warm smile. Now, he had the composed, cold expression of a proper clan leader. It was as if his role had reshaped him, much like Uchiha Fugaku's naturally stern demeanor.
After exchanging pleasantries, they both fell into silence. Shinki wasn't interested in small talk, and Hiashi seemed content with the quiet.
"Your bone ramen is ready, along with your side dishes. Enjoy," Teuchi said, placing the food in front of Shinki.
Shinki picked up his chopsticks and began to eat, skipping the customary "Itadakimasu."
"I'm sorry for what happened before..." Hiashi said softly, almost too quietly to hear.
Shinki paused, ramen halfway to his mouth. "Did I hear that right? Apologizing?"
"Are you here for me?" Shinki asked directly after slurping down a mouthful.
"Yes," Hiashi admitted. He was less composed than he would be in later years, still learning to navigate the complexities of leadership.
"My father wanted me to extend the clan's apologies on his behalf."
"Heh," Shinki chuckled.
The Hyuga clan must have been shaken by recent events. They had not only lost a prominent member but had also been left out in the cold by the Hokage's office. Worse, they faced potential retribution from Tsunade. The elders of the main family had even spent time in Anbu custody before being released.
The Hyuga leaders had realized that neutrality was no longer an option. Whether they wanted it or not, they were involved.
Shinki resumed eating, saying between bites, "No need for apologies. As long as you don't keep causing trouble for me, I'll consider that enough."
Hiashi's expression tightened for a moment, but he continued, "The family truly wishes to make amends. If you need anything, we are willing to offer compensation."
Were the Hyuga trying to switch allegiances? Shinki pondered this as he finished his ramen, not responding right away.
Hiashi, too, resumed eating, though in a far more precise and restrained manner, each bite calculated and deliberate. His formality highlighted the sincerity of his visit.
It was clear that the Hyuga's apology was genuine. The events surrounding their betrayal by the Third Hokage and subsequent conflicts with Tsunade had shaken them. The elders realized that staying neutral had been a mistake. They couldn't afford to remain aloof from Konoha's internal power struggles.
Shinki set down his bowl and looked at Hiashi. "We'll see how things go. Actions speak louder than words."
Hiashi nodded solemnly. He understood that the road to true reconciliation would be long.
