Ch 166
Monday was spent again, distracted, drawing swords, and Tuesday was spent checking to see if Marianne could train alone.
After running five laps around the gym and being forbidden to use recovery spells, it was fun to get the kid off the ground after running the last seven laps.
While in the riding position, I helped her to balance the weight by having her hold the iron sword in both hands. Marianne made a few squealing sounds like slaughtering a pig, then quickly agreed and started working hard.
When doing it alone, I taught him carefully about various things, telling him not to get hurt.
After sending the child off, I also did some brief training and came out to the main gate of the academy.
Tuesday was also the day I had promised to meet with Professor Wilton Roberts.
I came out on time and waited for a long time, but Wilton didn’t come out. I was wondering why, when a tall man who had been standing over there for a long time came walking towards me with brisk steps.
“I really didn’t think so, but you really don’t recognize me.”
“⋯Professor?”
It was Wilton Roberts.
I couldn’t help but laugh when I realized that I hadn’t recognized him because he wasn’t wearing black. Unlike his usual routine of wearing black from neck to toe, today Roberts was dressed like an ordinary person.
He wore a brown vest over a white shirt, a thick, plain coat over it, and a muffler wrapped around him. I was surprised to see that Roberts, who was dressed so well, had a rather ordinary appearance. His gray hair shone gray-brown in the sunlight.
I was amazed once again. He looks like he’s disguised without disguising himself. What a great person he is.
“okay.”
“sorry.”
“The place I’m going now is my first job. There’s nothing else to worry about, and you’re not supposed to open your mouth until I speak to you first.”
“⋯Yes.”
Roberts didn’t exactly accept my apology, but he didn’t seem offended. He got into the carriage normally, and I followed him.
Wilton Roberts’ first job would be in the Imperial Nobles’ Yearbook Management and Inspection Department. It was the first of many secrets of this empire. He was nervous about the long journey ahead, but the carriage stopped at a street where the public offices of the Sheeran Empire were gathered.
It was natural for all institutions of the Cerran Empire to have several buildings on a wide land. Among them, five large buildings stood in front of the place where the carriage stopped, surrounded by high walls.
There was not a single person passing through the passageway that was wide enough to fit eight carriages at a time.
⋯Is it a time when there are no people? I was curious, but I didn’t open my mouth because I had heard something before.
Wilton got out of the carriage and walked along the fence instead of heading for the main gate. He hid himself in the middle of the road, thus hiding his presence.
Wilton looked back at me and nodded with a pleased expression. I just held my breath.
At one point, Wilton Roberts stopped and made a few hand gestures against the wall, and the wall became a door.
⋯I bit my lip to barely stop the exclamation from spilling out.
I walked silently behind Wilton, who took the lead.
It was a long, dark passage. On the way in, Wilton took out the artifact hanging from his neck several times. Each time, a door appeared at the end of a dead end.
The door appeared in front, on the right, or on the left. It felt like I was walking blindfolded and feeling my way along the road.
After repeating this four times, we suddenly arrived at a large cavity.
Several wizards were sitting at a long table, looking off to the side.
Around him were men and women who looked similar to Wilton. Most of them had gray or brown hair, and some wore hoods to hide their hair color.
He followed Wilton closely, observing them with his eyes without turning his head.
Wilton stood before one of the wizards.
“Name, identity.”
“Kyle, inspector.”
Wilton Roberts’ name is Kyle? But the wizard took out a needle and pricked Wilton’s fingertip to confirm, and nodded.
“Confirmed. What about next?”
“cub.”
“Apprentices have restricted access to restricted areas.”
“I know.”
The wizard asked for my hand, so I looked at Wilton. Wilton nodded once, so I obediently gave him my hand. The needle touched and fell on my fingertips. Not a single drop of blood came out.
While I was dumbfounded, the wizard handed me a square card.
Apprenticeship. The square piece of paper with the two letters written on it felt stiff. I hesitated and put it in my pocket.
Wilton Roberts again took the lead, and, without a moment’s hesitation, I followed him, trying to calm my anxious mind.
We passed through another long passage and again reached a large cavity.
Numerous desks were lined up at regular intervals. A large desk was filled with documents piled up like a tower, and dozens of ranunculus flowers were flying silently above people’s heads.
Instead of the sound of birds chirping, the place was filled with the sound of pens scraping across paper.
Wilton Roberts approached one of the desks and tapped on it.
“Same day, ha, observation.”
The person sitting there handed a scroll to Wilton without answering. Wilton left without even checking the contents as if it was natural.
As I followed him silently, Wilton entered through a door that opened to one side and unrolled a scroll.
Wilton Roberts glanced over the contents and spoke to me.
“question.”
“⋯What do you have in your hand now?”
“Today’s mission.”
“Can I talk here?”
“Because this is a place where no one can peek.”
As Wilton tapped the wall, a white magic formula appeared and disappeared. I blinked. Wilton showed me a scroll. It had someone’s name, where they lived, and a brief description of their personal history written on it.
[Bennett Lloyd, 22, 38, Capital 21.
Lloyd’s B-4 14:28]
“He is the fourth illegitimate child of the current Viscount Lloyd. Let’s go and take a look.”
After checking the contents of the scroll, Wilton pushed it through a hole in the wall and walked away again. I was dumbfounded again and kept my mouth shut.
When I arrived, I was surprised once again.
At twenty-eight minutes past two in the afternoon, a carriage stopped in front of house number 38, number 21. Wilton Roberts stood up to the window of the house without any trouble. I did the same. A beautiful woman screamed at the man who had entered the house.
“How many times do I have to tell you? I don’t want any of that! Stop bothering me!”
“You don’t even need a deposit? Really?”
“Yes! I’m not Lloyd, I’m Bennett Hamilton! Get out of here!”
Wilton Roberts wrote something. A moment later, the man got into a carriage and left the house.
Bennett Hamilton threw his pillow at him in anger, and Wilton stopped peeking out the window and went down the alley.
I couldn’t stand it anymore and asked.
“⋯What is this?”
“I’m just checking to see if it’s true that he voluntarily gave up his title.”
“Without even telling me?”
“Because people can change their minds. How can you read people’s minds?”
“Same day, ha, observation is.”
“It refers to a mission with low difficulty that only requires observation, and can be checked only today.”
I was dumbfounded. I didn’t understand. This isn’t right. That’s what I thought.
But Wilton Roberts was always calm. I had always admired him, so I tried my best to keep my temper under control.
“⋯What if this hadn’t happened today, at this moment?”
“I finished my share of the mission, so I gave the information to the next person who was given the same mission so that they could check it.”
“⋯How on earth, how on earth did the author know to come at this hour?”
Wilton looked straight at me and smiled. His smile gave me goosebumps.
“Everyone knows you’re running around the parade grounds with that purple-haired kid at six in the morning. It’s kind of like that. It’s nothing special.”
“⋯.”
I was speechless. I shook my head for a moment to collect my thoughts and asked again.
“⋯Professor, it looks like you’re enjoying this.”
“Isn’t it fun? Why not, if you’re interested, why don’t you apply?”
I opened my mouth to refuse immediately, but Wilton Roberts was a little faster.
“I’m not saying you should do it right now, I’m just saying you’re a good talent so consider it.”
“⋯Yes. I’ll think about it.”
In retrospect, it was against morality to reject the teacher’s words outright. I kept my mouth shut. My mind was in a state of confusion. This… was really strange. It seemed very strange.
Is this something that is naturally acceptable? Is this the right thing to do for the person being observed?
After thinking for a moment, he opened his mouth again.
“If the person who just entered the room had attempted to commit violence against a woman named Bennett.”
“I would have stopped it.”
“⋯Is that so?”
“Yes. Because it is an act that falls under the category of unfair competition for power.”
It wasn’t a question of right or wrong right away. I was confused the whole time.
Wilton Roberts tapped my shoulder and spoke in a friendly voice. His voice, which was different from his usual tone, was rather frightening.
“I usually do this when I’m not at the Academy. Did that answer your question?”
“⋯Yes.”
“You are a man of considerable skill. The Imperial Noble Almanac Management Department is always looking for excellent talent. If you seek order and peace, come to me anytime. I will help you get hired.”
“⋯Yes.”
I answered politely.
Wilton Roberts blew his silent flute and called Ranunculus. The cloudy-colored Ranunculus heard Wilton’s whispered message and immediately left.
I couldn’t believe that the cute, blue thing I’d cared for and this wild, quiet thing were the same species of magical creature.
Over dinner that day, Wilton Roberts told us a few more things about the hand signals and secret words of the Noble Almanac Administration.
When I couldn’t help but ask if it was okay for me to tell him this, Wilton smiled warmly and answered.
“It doesn’t matter if you don’t become a member of our family. You deserve to know this much.”
“⋯Why is that?”
“Someday we will collaborate.”
I couldn’t even guess what kind of calculations were made. I ate in silence. The juicy meat tasted bitter, like chewing paper.
