Chapter 50: Chapter 50

"Enough talking, lead the way!"

With Doug Wang guiding him, Eren soon arrived at an upscale furniture mall in Chinatown. Doug's uncle's safe store was located within.

Navigating through the familiar layout, Doug led Eren upstairs to the second floor. After winding through a few aisles, they stopped in front of a discreet yet luxurious safe shop.

Before they even stepped inside, Doug shouted, "Uncle! Uncle! Stop napping and come out to greet your customers!"

A disgruntled voice came from within. "I hear you, you noisy brat! Do you want to deafen me?"

Moments later, an enormous figure, easily several times Doug's size, rose slowly from behind the cashier counter. The man, weighing at least 300 pounds, bore a striking resemblance to Doug.

Eren's gaze flickered between Doug and his uncle, and he couldn't help but smirk inwardly.

The genes in this family are truly something.

Unfazed by his uncle's scolding, Doug grinned and said, "Uncle, this is my best friend from school. He's looking to buy a safe. Help him out, would you?"

Doug's uncle turned to scrutinize Eren, noting his youthful, student-like appearance. Shaking his head, he remarked, "At your age, you don't really need a safe. If you're just looking for a place to stash some Playboy magazines or workout DVDs, I can give you an old, small safe that your parents won't be able to open."

Before Eren could respond, Doug jumped in excitedly. "Wait, Playboy? Eren, do you have that kind of stuff?"

Eren shot Doug an exasperated glare. "Seriously? Do you think I need to hide magazines in my school locker like you? I live alone; I don't need to hide anything."

Before Doug could retort, flustered and indignant, Eren continued, "I'm buying a safe to protect my valuables. My house was almost broken into recently by a group of burglars. I figured it's safer to lock things away."

Mentioning the burglars brought a grimace to Doug's uncle's face. "If that's the case, then you definitely need a good safe. Trust me, those idiots wouldn't know how to open a high-end safe even if they tried."

After throwing in a jab at the burglars, Doug's uncle asked Eren about the safe's intended location and size requirements. He then introduced a few cost-effective models suitable for home use.

Despite being labeled "cost-effective," the shop's premium safes were far from cheap. The most affordable model started at over $2,000.

After comparing features, Eren ultimately chose a medium-sized alloy safe, roughly the size of a refrigerator, to place in his basement. Additionally, he bought a small, compact safe similar in size to the hidden compartment under his bed, intending to see if it could fit there.

The two safes cost Eren over $10,000, even with a 40% discount thanks to Doug's family connection. Without the discount, the bill would have easily exceeded $20,000.

Both safes were heavy. The larger one required precise measurements and professional installation to ensure security and stability. Fortunately, the shop offered delivery and installation services, saving Eren considerable hassle.

Doug's uncle, despite his size, worked with surprising efficiency. After Eren signed the check, the shop staff promptly retrieved two brand-new safes from the warehouse and arranged for a team to deliver and install them at Eren's house.

They even offered Eren a ride back as part of the delivery.

Back home, Eren supervised the installation team as they moved the larger safe into his basement and began securing it in place. Meanwhile, he carried the smaller safe upstairs to his bedroom.

However, as Eren climbed the stairs to the third floor, an inexplicable sense of unease washed over him. His mood darkened, weighed down by an oppressive and gloomy feeling.

What's going on?

He paused, sensing something amiss. Scanning his surroundings carefully, he activated his Spirit Sight.

His vision shifted, revealing faint gray mists seeping from the partially open door of his bedroom. The ominous, shadowy hues seemed to shroud the entire house in an aura of dread.

At the same time, a faint yet pungent stench of decay began to permeate the air, worming its way into Eren's nostrils.

Calmly but warily, Eren set down the heavy safe. His right hand moved instinctively to the pistol at his waist, while his left hand reached for the grenade in his pocket.

Approaching the bedroom door cautiously, he used his Spirit Sight to observe every detail.

When he reached the door, what he saw through the narrow gap made his pupils contract sharply, and his entire body tensed.

The sight before him was grotesque.

The only window in the bedroom had been covered with curtains, plunging the room into a dim, grayish light. The walls, once pristine and orderly, were now adorned with frames—dozens of wooden frames nailed meticulously across the walls.

Inside these frames were spiders of all shapes, sizes, and colors.

Hundreds of spiders had been turned into specimens, pinned to the frames with silver nails. They were arranged in an intricate, grotesque pattern resembling an inverted spider spread across the walls.

The specimens, despite being arranged with precision, had clearly been hastily prepared. The faint odor of decay emanating from the spiders suggested that they hadn't been fully preserved.

It seemed whoever had put them up was in a rush, completing their work hurriedly. Judging by the struggle marks on some of the spiders, they had likely been alive when pinned, their lives slowly ebbing away.

Now, they were deathly still.

Only their dark, desiccated eyes remained, gazing eerily into the upside-down world they had been left in.
