Chapter 4: The Perpetrator of the Crime
I called Rick from the hotel and talked with him.
"Isn't Japan nice?"
Rick on the other end of the phone chuckled, clearing his throat.
"We can only stay for twenty years at most. Since we'll look the same on the outside, they'll begin to suspect us. Until then, enjoy. The room I was using has been remodeled, so you can use it as you like."
"I'll do that. Sorry about the job, too. You had to introduce me."
"Don't worry about that. But don't do surgery, you might go wild."
"I know. But their blood tastes so good."
"Hey! You bit someone already, you're quick."
"I didn't have a choice. I couldn't take blood with me on the flight. Do you know how long it took to fly from the outskirts of Paris to Japan?"
"Yes, I know. Well, I'm glad you're doing fine. If you have any problems, just let me know. And if you want blood, I'll show you where you can get it easily."
"Thank you. Oh, right! Rick, have you seen Jack the werewolf over there?"
"What's up? I just saw him yesterday."
"Well... they're in Japan, too. His people don't really have the best dining etiquette. Thanks to one, it's being investigated as a case over here. Tell him to stay out of trouble."
"Well, that's a disaster. I'll let him know."
I hung up the phone and laid down on my bed. I had a busy day today, but it was fun.
I begin work tomorrow. Rick said I'd better get there early or I'll get lost. I think I'll go to sleep.
I gaze out the window.
It's bright even at night in Tokyo, and there are a lot of people.
I guess I'll get some blood before I turn in. I go out into the night.
A woman calls out to me as I'm walking.
She said, "You look great. Are you a model or something?"
"No, I'm a doctor."
"Oh! Then won't you examine me? Every inch of me."
And she grabs me by the arm.
"I don't mind an aggressive woman."
With that, we went into a nearby hotel.
"I'm gonna go take a shower."
"Mind if I join you?"
"I like aggressive men."
With that said, we both take a shower together.
*Oh, it smells delicious.*
We get out of the shower and go straight to bed. I brush her hair and kiss her neck. Then I sink my kiva into it. It's delicious!
The woman looks euphoric. Apparently, it feels good to be bitten by us vampires. I knew that if I drank any more, she'd die.
I got carried away.
*Oh no! *
The woman is unconscious, but it looks like she's merely fallen asleep. Satisfied, I won't starve for a while. I leave the hotel alone.
♢♢♢
I start work today.
After an explanation from the office staff, I went to the outpatient clinic. This is a global hospital with many foreign patients. I can understand most languages. So they call on me for help when they are treating patients.
I could be called an interpreter.
The patients come from many different countries.
I get my assignments in the general medicine department. Even if there is a patient, if I'm called to help, I go where I'm needed. When I'm not around, a nurse pays attention to their questions for me, which is a great help.
Then one day, a few days since I began, I saw a face I recognized from somewhere in the hospital. It was Yuki, no doubt. She noticed me and came rushing toward me.
"Marc! So you really are a doctor."
She laughs.
I asked her, "Why are you in this hospital? I thought you were at the clinic."
She then speaks, in a small voice. "It's difficult to run a clinic by myself, so I sometimes work part-time like this."
*Japan must be harsh. Are medical expenses insured? *
The cost of medical care is unimaginably low in the U.S. because of insurance. Doctor's salaries aren't that high either. I make more per year than the other doctors here because of Rick's connections, and my achievements at academic conferences. Plus, I also translate for them. I'm doing a good job.
"You must be having a hard time too."
When I say that, does she look a little sulky?
"No, it's fine! I want to be free to do what I want, so this works for me."
