chapter 1
0. A Slightly Odd First Meeting
About 10 years ago, when I was a curious 6-year-old child.
I pestered my diplomat parents to take me to a place near our home called the ‘Japanese Embassy in Korea.’
The reason was simple curiosity.
In a history book I happened to see, it said that Japan had many conflicts with our country, and I happened to learn that Japanese people were at the ‘Japanese Embassy in Korea.’
So, I wanted to go there myself.
Looking back now, it was a truly absurd reason, but what would a 6-year-old child know?
At that time, I had no idea what a diplomat, my parents’ profession, did, why there would be Japanese people at the Japanese Embassy in Korea, or that taking me there could be a significant diplomatic faux pas. I just followed along without a clue.
And there, I happened to meet a child my age.
Her name was Fujiwara Aki.
She was a girl with light pink hair, which I had never seen before, and blue eyes that sparkled like jewels.
Because of that, my childlike curiosity kicked in, and I walked over without fear.
“Hi there.”
Worrying for a moment that she might not understand Korean, I boldly approached the pretty girl and spoke.
“I’m Korean, are you Japanese by any chance?”
The girl who exuded the most mysterious and exotic atmosphere among the people I had met at the age of six, Fujiwara Aki.
The first words she said to me, with her cute bobbed hair that suited her so well, were.
“Did you come from North Korea or South Korea?”
“…Huh?”
…It was a rather odd question.
