Chapter 4: The One with a Duel

The lush gardens of Philip's mansion were transformed into a battlefield as the late afternoon sun cast long shadows over the neatly trimmed grass. Eris and I stood facing each other, a palpable tension in the air.

"Are you ready?" Eris asked, her green eyes gleaming with determination. Her wooden sword was held confidently in her hands, her stance reflecting the training she had undergone.

I took a deep breath and nodded. "Yes. Let's begin."

Without waiting for a signal, Eris lunged forward with impressive speed. Her sword flashed through the air, aimed directly at me. I barely had time to react, raising my arms instinctively to block the strike. The impact of her sword against my makeshift magical construct sent a jarring shock through my arms.

"Nice reflexes," she commented with a smirk, clearly enjoying the challenge. "But let's see how you handle this."

Eris's next series of attacks were swift and relentless. She moved with fluid grace, her sword a blur of motion as she aimed for gaps in my defense. I struggled to keep up, blocking and dodging as best as I could. My main focus was to keep her at bay while preparing my constructs.

I raised my hand and concentrated, channeling mana into creating a simple barrier in front of me. The barrier materialized just in time to block another of Eris's powerful swings. She was strong and skilled, but my constructs held firm against her blows.

Eris took a step back, catching her breath. "Impressive. You're not just all talk."

I nodded, focusing on creating a new construct. I visualized a shield—a large, protective dome that would cover both my front and sides. The mana swirled around me, and the shield took shape, glowing with a soft blue light.

"Let's see how well you handle this!" Eris shouted, charging at me again. Her sword struck the shield, the force of the blow reverberating through the magical construct. The shield held, but the impact forced me to strain to maintain it.

Eris was relentless, her sword strikes aimed at testing the limits of my constructs. She seemed to be enjoying the challenge, though her frustration was evident when her attacks repeatedly failed to break through my defenses.

I knew I had to do more than just defend—I needed to counterattack. I focused on creating a new construct: a pair of magical blades, lightweight and versatile. I imagined them floating beside me, ready to assist in the fight.

With a burst of mana, the two blades materialized, hovering just above my hands. I gripped them firmly, feeling their weight and balance. They were more like extensions of my will than physical weapons.

Eris's eyes widened slightly as she saw the new constructs. "So you're not just a one-trick pony. Let's see what those blades can do!"

She charged again, but this time, I was ready. I swung the magical blades in a sweeping arc, sending a flurry of energy slashes toward her. Eris deftly dodged the attacks, her sword moving with practiced precision. However, the energy slashes forced her to stay on the defensive, giving me a brief moment to press the attack.

With a series of quick, calculated movements, I aimed to disarm her. My blades struck at her sword, the impact causing her to lose her grip momentarily. I could see the determination in her eyes, but I also sensed her growing fatigue.

Eris recovered quickly and adjusted her stance, her focus sharpening. "You're not bad at this," she admitted. "But don't think you've won just yet!"

She launched a series of rapid attacks, her sword a blur of motion. I had to rely on my magical constructs to deflect and redirect her strikes. The battle was becoming a dance of offense and defense, each of us pushing our limits.

I could feel the mana draining from me, but I pushed through, determined to showcase the full extent of my abilities. I began to create a new construct—a larger, more complex barrier that would not only protect me but also provide an opportunity for a counterattack.

The barrier took shape, enveloping me in a shimmering dome of energy. It was both a shield and a trap, designed to limit Eris's mobility while giving me the chance to strike.

The intense battle continued, with Eris and I locked in a high-stakes duel. My energy reserves were dwindling, but I had one final strategy in mind. I needed to use my constructs strategically to gain the upper hand.

With the barrier in place, I created additional constructs—a series of magical projectiles that hovered around me. I visualized them as small, sharp discs of energy, ready to be launched at Eris.

Eris, seeing the new constructs, looked momentarily surprised. "What's that supposed to be?"

I focused on the projectiles, sending them toward her with precise control. The discs moved swiftly, aiming to force her into a corner. Eris deftly dodged the projectiles, but they kept her on the move and prevented her from mounting a strong offensive.

As she maneuvered around the barrier, I prepared my final move. I focused all my remaining mana into creating a large, imposing construct—a massive, ethereal blade that glowed with a bright, intense light. It hovered in front of me, its presence commanding and awe-inspiring.

"This is the endgame," I declared, raising the glowing blade. "Prepare yourself, Eris!"

Eris narrowed her eyes, her determination unwavering. She charged at me once more, her sword ready for a decisive blow. But as she neared, I swung the massive construct blade in a sweeping arc, its energy cutting through the air with a powerful force.

The impact of the construct blade forced Eris to retreat, her sword unable to withstand the sheer power of the magical blade. The energy from the construct blade created a shockwave that pushed her back, leaving her momentarily disoriented.

Breathing heavily, I watched as Eris struggled to regain her footing. The battle had taken its toll on both of us, but I had managed to outmaneuver her with my magical constructs.

Eris finally stopped, her sword lowered, and she looked at me with a mixture of respect and exhaustion. "Alright, you win," she said, panting. "You've definitely earned my respect."

I lowered the construct blade, nodding in acknowledgment. "You're a formidable opponent, Eris. It was an honor to fight with you."

As the sun set over the garden, the duel came to an end. The battle had tested both our skills and resolve, and it marked the beginning of a new chapter in our relationship. With newfound respect and understanding, we could move forward together, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
