Chapter 12: Chapter 3: New Reality

I never thought the afterlife would look so… ordinary.

It is eerily peaceful here, a serene expanse filled with soft clouds and shimmering light. But this calmness is a stark contrast to our reality—a reality that shattered in a moment of betrayal; a moment that took my life, and the lives of my friends, with no chance for us to respond. The villain we faced was well beyond our expectations, a dark storm that enveloped us whole. Now, as Bakugo, Todoroki, and I step into this new existence, we grapple with the unfathomable truth of our demise.

I'm torn between wanting to find hope in the notion of a new beginning and grappling with the haunting sight of our families. "This could be a chance for us," I whisper, attempting to mask my sorrow with optimism. "A new frontier where we can protect others without the constraints of our previous lives."

Bakugo crosses his arms, eyes narrowed as he holds back tears. "You really think we can just start over? We're… we're dead!"

I nod, my voice determined even as my heart sinks. "But it's a chance to grow, to learn. We can be heroes here too, helping those who—"

A heavy cloud materializes before us, casting a shadow over my words. I freeze as I see the familiar faces of our loved ones staring back. My mother, Inko, clings to my lifeless body, her sobs echoing through the cloud. Her anguished cries twist like a dagger in my chest. "Izuku… my boy…" she weeps. I want to reach out, to tell her that I'm okay, that I'm still here in spirit. But I'm only a spectator in this heart-wrenching scene.

Beside me, Todoroki's expression crumbles the moment he sees his parents, Enji and Rei, standing rigidly. Their shock morphs into despair as they watch the news coverage, the realization of loss sinking in. "Fuyumi… Natsuo…" he mutters, his voice barely a whisper. His siblings are behind them, tears streaming down their faces, and I know he feels the weight of their grief heavily.

"Mom!" Bakugo cries out suddenly, his voice catching in his throat as he sees his mother, collapsed in Masaru's arms, both of them enveloped in an overwhelming sorrow. "How can they… how can they do this? They didn't deserve to see us like that!"

"We didn't deserve to go like this either," I say softly, trying to keep my composure. But the sight of our families, the pain etched on their faces, pulls at me like a tidal wave.

One by one, the facade we try to maintain crumbles. Bakugo's hands tremble as he watches his mother's heart break. It's too much for him, and before I know it, he's shaking, his voice breaking—a fierce boy brought to his knees by despair. "Why? Why did we have to die? Why couldn't we save them?"

Todoroki stands frozen, tears tracing down his cheeks. "I wanted to protect them," he chokes out. "I wanted to be strong enough…" His voice trails off, and it's a moment before the silent shadows of our past life engulfs him.

I'm left standing, caught in turmoil. "We were strong, we were working together. They taught us how to be heroes…" My own words fall flat. The light that once sparkled around us feels dimmer with every heartbeat.

For a moment, I feel as if my spirit is about to break from the weight of it all. The memories rush through me, flooding my thoughts with laughter, camaraderie, and dreams we shared while alive. Kirishima, always smiling. Kaminari's goofy energy. Jiro with her deep understanding of music—our class was filled with talent, and now they will face a world broken by our absence.

Then, as if the universe felt my heartache, a flicker of resolve ignites in my chest. "They'll make it," I say softly, even as tears fall. "Our friends… they'll find a way. They know what we believed in. They'll honor us by continuing to fight."

Bakugo lifts his head, staring hard at me. "You really think they can?"

I nod, my heart swelling with determination. "They'll remember us. They'll fight for us, because we're heroes, every one of us—alive or not."

And as I speak those words, I feel the lingering spirits of the heroes we were surge within me. In this quiet afterlife, my lips curl into a faint but sincere smile. We may be gone, but our legacy won't fade. We'll always be a part of their story.

Together, we stand, watching over our families and friends—our sacrifices not in vain. And as we turn from the sorrow of the past and face the uncharted future that lies ahead in the afterlife, I know this isn't the end. It's just the beginning of a different journey.
