President Loki knelt trembling on the ground, each second stretching endlessly like an eternity in hell. His fear mounted with every passing moment of silence.
He couldn't take it anymore. Summoning his courage, he sneaked a glance upward—only to meet Russell's cold, oppressive gaze.
A wave of terror surged through him, and he immediately lowered his head again, praying feverishly to Odin for mercy.
Russell broke the silence with a scornful mutter, his voice dripping with disdain.
"I hate Frost Giants."
He clenched his fists, frustration boiling within him.
The system had once again served up nothing but garbage—weak abilities with no real value. Worse, none of these Lokis had the illusion magic he sought.
Trash. All of them.
Just then, a timid voice broke through his thoughts.
"Y-Yes! I hate Frost Giants too!"
Russell turned his gaze downward to see President Loki groveling, his face contorted into a pathetic, sycophantic smile.
Russell debated whether the man's submissive demeanor was worth indulging. After a pause, he decided to give him a chance.
"Can you find me a Loki who knows illusion magic?" Russell asked flatly, his tone carrying a dangerous edge.
President Loki blinked in surprise, then nodded so fervently he nearly hurt his neck.
"Yes! Yes, I can!" he exclaimed.
As he spoke, a sudden realization struck him—when he first met this terrifying figure, the man had mentioned sparing those who didn't know illusion magic.
I could have run away back then.
Now, regret gnawed at his insides.
But before he could wallow further, he felt Russell's gaze pierce into him. Those molten gold eyes seemed to burn directly into his soul, filling him with an overwhelming sense of dread. For a moment, he swore he saw Odin himself in a vision.
The sheer weight of the suppression made him tremble uncontrollably.
"I wouldn't dare lie to you!" President Loki stammered. "I can't find a Loki directly, but I know this plain and city like the back of my hand. I can search for one effectively!"
Russell's molten gold gaze darkened slightly as he pressed further.
"In that case, your team should be larger. Why are there so few of you?"
President Loki hesitated, looking sheepish.
"Well... not all Lokis agreed to join me," he admitted. "And we don't always win. At our peak, I had over twenty Lokis under me, but many were lost in fights. This team was only formed recently."
He shifted uncomfortably before adding, "I usually evaluate targets carefully. For example, Viking Loki thought we were up against a fool this time, so we came.
"Of course, my evaluations aren't perfect. If I sense real danger, I... usually run."
He grimaced, embarrassed.
"Normally, I'd have fled already. But you—you were too overwhelming. The others noticed the danger and betrayed me immediately. They ran faster than I could!"
He sighed, then muttered under his breath, "Guess it was a blessing in disguise. Those who ran fast are probably ashes now."
Russell's molten gaze faded, though his oppressive aura remained.
"You have one day," he said coldly. "If you fail to deliver..." He leaned closer, his voice like ice. "...turning to ash will be the least of your worries."
President Loki bobbed his head rapidly, his fear palpable.
Night fell.
Russell reclined once more, deciding against searching tonight. As he lay back, he asked casually:
"You resemble Loki from the Sacred Timeline. You should've grown up in Asgard. Why don't you know illusion magic? Didn't Frigga teach you?"
President Loki shifted awkwardly.
"In my timeline, Asgard didn't have that spell," he said. "Besides, I was always too playful as a child. When I grew up, I had no interest in magic."
"When it became clear I wasn't going to sit on the throne of the All-Father, I left for Earth and ran for president."
He scowled bitterly.
"I even became the mayor of New York! But then the TVA came!" He clenched his fists, his voice rising with anger. "Those bastards didn't even let me explain before cutting my timeline!"
"I was doing good! I'm a good person!"
Russell snorted quietly, his expression unreadable.
A good person? Sure.
Shaking his head, Russell closed his eyes to meditate.
Tomorrow, President Loki would have his chance. Whether it worked or not remained to be seen.
