Lured by the Moon

Chapter 17: The Search Begins

As the phone continued to buzz like a pesky fly that didn't leave, Sebastian snatched his phone from his pocket and put it next to his ear. His brother's raspy voice floats across his ear. "... Brother..."

Something is off. Why does his voice sound raspy more than usual? Sebastian curls his lips downward, "Have you been drinking?"

A harsh bark of laughter came out of the phone until his raspy voice started coughing harshly as if he couldn't catch his breath.

Cough! Cough! Cough!

Sebastian knew something was really wrong. His heart tightened in a knot, then he pushed it aside to focus more calmly. "What's wrong?"

"I-I did something really stupid." His voice was soft, raspy until it was broken by something. Another voice, an angry voice, shouts, then something crashes onto the ground that can barely be heard through the phone. Sebastian frowns; he grips the phone until his knuckles whiten, calls out for Quinn's name a couple of times, hoping to figure out what's going on. "QUINN, TELL ME WHERE YOU ARE?!"

He shouts with a sense of urgency in his voice, causing Atlas to furrow his brow. Sebastian didn't pay any attention to him. He was so focused on the sounds that he could hear the sound of fighting and heavy breathing as if he were fighting for his breath.

"Brother, find Gravenor… That's how you find me–"

It was the last thing he heard before silence settled in. There was no more. He wasn't aware that his hands were slightly trembling, but his heart became numb and detached.

As his mind came into focus, he could feel something… something that was warm… His impassive eyes looked down at his hand. Atlas was holding his hand.

Looking into Atlas's eyes, which show concern within them. "Hey. What happened?"

Atlas was startled by a gentle smile that appeared across his lips, but his eyes had no light. It was dark and deep like the endless depth of the ocean. His heart skipped a beat at the sight; he swallowed as he tried to calm his taut nerves.

Sebastian gently removes Atlas's hand from him, although he didn't see that Atlas's eyes droop in slight dismay. He was too focused on the phone call he'd just had.

He turns around and walks into the house, although there was no difference in his stride. Although Atlas knew it was a facade, The man was holding back his emotions. He didn't know what to do, but every cell in his body urged him to follow him. So he did.

Sebastian walks into the hall that is dark and quiet; there is no sound, except for dim voices he can hear with his supernatural hearing.

After walking upstairs, he opens the door to his father's room. His father was startled by his appearance; he started coughing after drinking from the champagne. He wipes his lips that are stained with crimson blood.

Atlas was startled by the sight. In a dimly lit room, the man known as Sebastian's father was drinking wine. But he knew better. It was real blood.

He swallowed hard after coming to the realization. Although he knew, seeing it with your own eyes is two different things. T–They are v–vampires. Saying it out loud in his own mind sounds insane and absurd, but he knew they existed, though he never thought he would encounter one.

Watching Sebastian whose eyes are emotionless fills his heart with sinking dread. He could never find out. Where I'm from. If he ever discovers the truth, I'm as good as dead.

Sebastian stood before his father as he asked with narrowed eyes, "Where's Quinn?"

His father narrowed his eyes as he asked gruffly, "Why?"

Sebastian curved his lips into a cold smile, "I just got a phone call from him. He's in trouble."

Setting the blood champagne down on the table, he stood to his feet urgently, "What do you mean?"

Sebastian responds coldly, "On the phone, it sounds like there was a fight and he sounds like he had trouble breathing."

Frowning his eyes as he whispers, "Before the phone was hung up, he told me to find someone named Gravenor and that's where I'll find him."

His father looked behind him with narrowed eyes, Sebastian understood the look. He isn't pleased that Atlas is still here.

His father looked into his eyes with a questioning look that he understood very well. Sebastian nods stiffly, "Yes. He knows what we are."

His father scrutinized him deeply. For a moment, his face didn't reveal any expression, despite his heart racing like a flood trying to burst through a dam. His father released a soft sigh, "Well, it's none of my business."

Sebastian asks again, "Are you going to answer my questions?"

"He went to a party."

"What party?" He asks with evident confusion in his eyes.

"There was a Christmas party that was happening near the college campus."

Nodding his head, he told his father that he would go to visit the college to see if he could find anything. Maybe he could find out what happened there. Or what happened to his brother?

His father gives him a strange glance. He wasn't certain–he looked faintly concerned. Before he leaves the room with Atlas, his father's gruff voice floats within his ear. "When was the last time you drank blood? Your face is really pale. You better get something to drink. You know what happens if you don't."

Shoot! Turning around, he asks, "Are you going to look into the name Gravenor?"

His father rolls his eyes sarcastically. "Of course, doofus. Who do you think I am?" He said this with a cold light that flashed across his eyes.

As much as his father and he don't get along and see eye-to-eye. But when it really comes down to it, they would defend each other no matter what. Because they may argue and fight like hyenas that don't get along, but the bond of a family prevails forever.
