Chapter 48. Uneventful day
The next day rolled around, bringing with it the last day of school for the week. It had been a long night of investigating monsters and spells that worked for Dark Magician Girl, and not Dark Magician himself. Not to mention the other support cards for everything else. Loud banging on the door was a rude awakening into the morning for both Blair and I. Blair burrowed further into my chest, while I held her tighter in my arms under the covers. That night, Blair didn’t have to sneak inside my bed, she just didn’t leave, knowing that I was too tired to even try to kick her out. The rest of the girls were piled around me, each making sure they were grabbing onto a piece of me while they slept.
I groaned, but recognized the banging, knowing that the person behind that door wouldn't let up until I had left the room. “Rakki!” Jayden yelled in a teasing tone between knocks. “If you don’t get up, I’ll just walk in, and find out who else might be under those covers!” He yelled while jiggling the handle, causing me to dart out of bed to hold the door shut. I huffed in anger and from the cold air in the morning, freezing my skin coming in through the slightly ajar door. Jayden glanced in with a grin. “That’s what you get for just leaving me for that girl yesterday. Bro’s before hoes man.” He chuckled while glancing at my wiggling sheets behind me.
“Why am I friends with you?” I groaned, causing Jayden to laugh as he let go of the handle. “Because you’re a big~-” I slammed the door in his face before he could finish whatever he was about to say. I turned back at all the girls moving and stretching under the covers. I yawned while getting dressed, talking to everyone while I was busy. “Ok, we have a plan for the deck. How much DP do you have?” Blair groaned under the covers, still wanting to remain in the warm cocoon she nestled herself in. “I think… maybe 10,000?” She muttered while slowly moving the covers off of her.
I nodded while thinking about how much her cards would cost. “You have most of the basic cards from your previous deck, so the most of our shopping would be for particular archetype cards… Alright, I’m getting breakfast, we’ll see if the card shop is open before classes.” I yelled while heading outside with all of my gear, the girls all joining me inside my deck.
Breakfast wasn’t anything special. Jayden, Syrus and I talked a bit about dueling, Blair joining us later. There were only two things different. One was all the eyes firmly directed at our table, boring holes into our heads. The other thing was the last person making it our table. “Ugh, I can’t believe that you guys actually eat this stuff…” Chazz, having changed his mind about schools, came back here. However after dropping out, he had to be a Red Slifer before moving up.
“Well, it’s nice to have you back here Chazz! I’m sure you can make it Obelisk in no time if you set your mind to it!” Jayden yelled with a smile, patting Chazz’s back in comradery. Chazz sighed and sneered at his plate, clearly unhappy with the style of food. I wasn’t much of a fan either, but it was at least edible. Chazz looked at me with disbelief and confusion, mostly at how I ate food like this. I shrugged my shoulders while shoving it in, before drinking water to force it down. My tried and true method.
“Anyway, do you guys know if the card shop is open before classes?” I asked once I was done taking a gulp of water. Jayden and Syrus both looked at each other pondering the answer. Chazz frowned while placing his fork down, clearly done even making the attempt to eat. “Of course. That’s when most people buy their cards. Where do you get yours from?” Jayden chimed in with a smile. “Oh a lot of his cards came from the disposal well!” Chazz looked between Jayden and I with disbelief. I shrugged again at him. “After I got some cards there, I didn’t need many more. I’m only helping Blair shop for cards.” I said while pointing my thumb at Blair sitting beside me.
“Speaking of which, did you guys pick out your cards yet!?” Jayden asked full of vigor. “Ah, I don’t know, there are so many options, and I want to make sure I get the best card for my deck.” Syrus said, his gaze lowered and full of stress. Blair thought for a moment before nodding, gathering the boy's attention. “Really!? What is it? I haven’t even seen your deck yet!” Jayden yelled, leaning closer to Blair in his excitement. I sighed, and pushed him back down in his seat. “Calm down for a second.” I groaned while Blair silently took out her PDA. She shuffled through it, before showing the card she wanted.
Taking a glance at the card’s attack surprised Jayden and Syrus, but Chazz noticed the effect before his jaw dropped. “What kind of crazy ability is that!?” He yelled his frustration before Blair turned off her PDA, a grin on her face. “Wait, what did it do?” Jayden asked, clearly not paying attention. Chazz sighed and shook his head, glancing at me with a ‘How do you stand him?’ look. I shrugged, not really knowing the answer myself, before I was done with my food. Just as Blair finished her food and took my tray for me, I stood up ready to leave. I looked at Chazz frowning at the food, and he met my gaze. “Don’t forget, one of those cards is for you. Pick a good one.”
Blair and I then left the dorms, on our way to the card shop for her plethora of cards. Wading through the plethora of students was not something that brought me joy. There were plenty of students all hanging around the counter, either waiting in line, or just opening random packs they bought with hopes of getting a rare card. Blair and I stood side by side, her using the excuse of other people pushing her to latch onto me. I kept my composure as we stepped a little further in line, until a few female student’s from Ra and Obelisk started whispering to each other.
“Clearly Rakki is on top…” “Sure, but how did it start?” “You see how cute Blair is!? Clearly Rakki couldn’t help himself.” “Look! Blair is grabbing Rakki!” “No way!” “Oh, my, gosh!” By the end I heard them squealing in excitement at our illicit relationship. I sighed, and shook my head. I had been called much worse so this wasn’t anything that would set me off, and they clearly weren’t trying to be dicks like people before, but it still wasn’t that pleasant for people to make assumptions about your personal life.
Blair giggled, clearly hearing the girls, not making the attempt to hide their squeals from behind us in line. “Are you going to say something?” She asked, her large brown eyes staring into me. I shook my head while resting my hand on my eyebrow, covering some of my face. “No, just let them think what they want… Not entirely wrong I guess…” I muttered by the end, not even sure why I said it out loud. “Let’s go.” I said to cover my mistake, pulling Blair to the counter with me. Not noticing Blair’s surprised blushing expression.
“What can I do for you today sweetie? More chance cards?” The counter girl said to me with a smile. I gave her a business smile and shook my head. “No, not today, I’m here to help Blair here get some cards.” Blair then took out her PDA, and presented her shopping list for the counter girl. The counter girl took the PDA, and scrolled through the cards, tapping her own computer while glancing back and forth between the two screens. “Ok…” She said while moving the monitor back for us to see. “That comes to a total of 100,000 DP.”
I let out a cough from the shock of how expensive cards were. ‘Must have been that fusion monster we found…’ I thought while glancing over the cost of each individual card. “Even if you help, we’re still 20,000 short…” Blair groaned as she tugged my jacket. I sighed and patted her hat as I thought. “It’ll be fine, let’s just-” As I was about to choose what cards to drop, the sound of payment went through. I looked at the fingerless gloved hand that made the purchase, and recognized it immediately.
I scoffed and shook my head while the counter girl quickly rounded up the cards in the back. “We have to stop meeting like this.” I said sarcastically looking at Alexis holding her PDA with a smirk. “You should move up, so you have enough DP to pay for yourself.” She snarkily said while putting her PDA away. “No! Then we’d have separate rooms!” Blair yelled while grabbing my jacket tighter. The squeals of girls behind us, making me scowl at them to be quiet. They did, but I knew the moment I turned away they were right back to whispering about being ‘protective’.
The counter girl came back with a smile, handing Blair her bag filled with new cards. “Thank you!” “Of course, come back anytime sweetie.” With that, Blair, Alexis, and I all left the shopping area to find somewhere more remote. I lightly hit Blair’s head in annoyance before rubbing it to help ease the pain. “Try not to yell out embarrassing things like that.” I sighed before turning to Alexis. “And don’t tease Blair too much, she is too innocent to understand some of your jokes.” Alexis smiled a bit, but it almost seemed like she was putting up a front. One that I had done plenty of times myself when I had to.
I paused for a moment, studying her expression. She noticed and soon changed it to confusion as she stared back at me. “Unless the princess is bored in her tower?” I asked with a raised eyebrow. Blair looked at me confused, but Alexis understood my words, judging by her scarlet face. She stuttered in shock as I continued to watch her reactions. I couldn’t help but smile seeing the cool and collected Alexis showcase this more shy and embarrassed side. I laughed at the surprisingly cute side she had, gathering both Blair’s and Alexis’ stunned silence.
I quickly reigned in my smile with my hand moving it back down to a smirk. I let out a contented sigh from laughing after so long as I looked at Alexis. “I’ll probably move up to Obelisk next year. My bed’s been getting a bit cramped.” Alexis’ face turned an even deeper shade of red as the morning bells rang, indicating class was starting. “See you in class.” I said to the frozen stiff princess, still processing all that I was saying. Blair beside me, holding on tight to my jacket. I glanced at her, and quickly ruffled her hat. “Don’t worry, I’m sure since we would be at the top, you can still room with me if you ask.”
Just saying that, Blair gave me a quick hug without a word, before silently pulling me towards the classroom. ‘Still a crybaby I see…’
