Chapter 167: Life is All Up to You
"You're fucking sick!" the boss yelled but didn't actually make a move.
The first reaction in his head was, how did he run into a lunatic with an Audi? It was such rotten luck.
The store was a mess, and it'd cost money to clean up! The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. Unnamed anger throbbed in his forehead as he thought he had become more cowardly with age!
"You wait, I'm calling the cops right now!"
"Call the cops over a few shitty fruits?" Xu Qingyan loomed over him, "The taxpayers' money is wasted by people like you."
"Why don't you crawl back into your mom's arms and let your eighty-year-old mom come out and hit me with a cane."
Li Yang stood at the entrance of the shop, taking in the scene that was like swords drawn and bows bent. Her whole body wavered, fearing the bulky boss might suddenly lash out.
Even though she had heard plenty of mean comments from those uncles, she rarely heard Brother Xu spit out such strong language—hardly any curse words, but extremely insulting.
Thump, she took two steps forward, only to be stopped by a glance from Xu Qingyan.
Taking the opportunity to stand sideways, Li Yang saw the boss's fierce face. His face was red, like a piece of iron continuously heating up, looking frightening.
"Be careful."
Xu Qingyan, however, seemed deaf to it and continued to stare at the boss, throwing the Audi keys onto the table covered in grape juice, and said indifferently.
"Either make a move, or pay the wages."
"Why should I pay!" the boss yelled, "Your sister left without a word, what about my losses? You trash my store like this and expect me to pay?"
"Losses? Who cares about your losses?" Xu Qingyan stomped a grape to a pulp, the purple juice splashing over the floor, "You owe wages, are the cops your daddy, siding with you?"
"If you don't pay today, take your pick, make a move or pay up. If you don't choose, I'll keep throwing until you can't help but make a move."
"Fighting means mutual assault, if you hit me in front of my sister, that means you'll have made an enemy, and you'll never have peace."
"Are you fucking insane? Doesn't fucking make any sense!" The boss glanced at the Audi, "Are you short of this money?"
"Is this about the money? It's fucking wages." Xu Qingyan picked up a bunch of grapes and smashed them on the table, shouting, "Cut the bullshit, which law taught you not to pay wages?"
"Addicted to bullying girls? Who the fuck's gonna be reasonable with you, pay up!"
The boss got angry and pounded the table three times, thud, thud, thud.
Li Yang's heart almost leapt to her throat in fear, worried the robust boss would pounce from behind the table. Fortunately, the anticipated violent scene didn't happen.
The boss clenched his teeth and squeezed out a few words.
"QR code for payment!"
Xu Qingyan turned to Li Yang and said.
"Your phone, receive your lawful labor compensation."
Li Yang still seemed a bit dazed, standing amidst the chaos of the fruit shop. Incandescent lights dangled above, moths fluttering vaguely, and the sweet scent of smashed fruit mingled in the air.
"Oh, sorry... Okay." She took out her phone, her hands still shaking slightly.
She handed the phone to Xu Qingyan, who then pushed it back to her.
"This is the labor compensation you deserve, open the payment QR code."
Only then did she remember that she hadn't unlocked the phone and fumbled around nervously for a bit. She handed the phone back to him, displaying the yellow WeChat payment QR code.
The boss frowned and said gruffly.
"Pay with Alipay."
"Don't have it, only WeChat," Xu Qingyan insisted without yielding, holding his hand in mid-air and thrusting it in front of the boss, "Do you prefer a bank transfer?"
At this, the boss had no choice but to pay, albeit reluctantly.
"One hundred sixty for two days, check it!"
He didn't look, just reached back and handed the phone to Li Yang.
In the burning gaze of the frustrated boss, Xu Qingyan leisurely picked a few bags of fruit, selecting a bit of each and brought them to the scale's edge, signaling the boss to ring them up.
"What's this?" The boss still had that murderous look.
"Ring me up."
Under the boss's angry yet helpless gaze, Xu Qingyan picked up the Audi keys. He didn't mind the filth, clutching it in his hand.
As his calm gaze met the boss's, the latter finally swallowed his last breath of anger and bowed his head to ring up the purchase.
A person who didn't mind getting dirty from an Audi, his heart wasn't much cleaner either.
"Zero out!"
The mechanical female voice of the calculator echoed in the fruit store, added up several times, and calculated the final price of the fruits.
"Seventy-eight, but sixty is fine."
Xu Qingyan still ended up scanning seventy-eight for the boss before leaving with Li Yang, even pausing at the store entrance to turn around and smile at the boss.
"Wishing you a prosperous business."
Watching the Audi's taillights flicker away, the boss looked at the payment record and couldn't help swearing.
"Prosperous my ass!"
He started to regret it; if only he had just paid, everything would have been fine.
He could've made a profit, but it was as if his heart was clogged with lard. Although he hadn't lost much—the smashed fruit wasn't worth much and the student labor was cheap.
But... he didn't make any money and suffered a silent loss.
Looking at the mess of the fruit store, he sighed. Now that accounts were settled, it was better to clean up and act like it never happened.
.....
The car drove out of the somewhat dilapidated neighborhood as the sky had already darkened.
Inside the car, Li Yang sat up straight in the backseat. Her black nylon bag was worn and damaged, she didn't dare to place it on the seat, simply setting it by her feet instead.
As they drove out of the neighborhood and into the flow of traffic.
All those white and black cars of various makes, like beasts, came rolling in from all directions. The crimson tail lights were like a series of red lanterns, suffocating to behold.
He wiped the steering wheel while asking.
