Chapter 142: Chapter 141: Conducting a Grand Experiment!

Chapter 141: Conducting a Grand Experiment!

The following day, Tonari accepted a mission and left Konoha alone.

After spending a full day at Konoha Hospital, he had familiarized himself with the workings of the Medical Corps and acquainted himself with his three direct subordinates. However, his overall impression of Konoha's medical prowess was... disappointing.

Perhaps being around top-tier medical ninja like Tsunade and scientific geniuses like Orochimaru had spoiled him, giving him overly high expectations. Still, it was clear that, without Tsunade's relentless contributions, Konoha's medical system wouldn't even be at its current level.

Yet, even in its current state, Konoha was leaps and bounds ahead of other villages in terms of medical capabilities. This stark contrast only underscored how vital Tsunade had been to Konoha's prosperity. Her phobia of blood had dealt an immeasurable blow to the village's efficiency.

As he darted through the forest, Tonari mused about the upcoming task. This was one of the rare instances he took on a mission alone, and it was also his first solo A-rank mission as a special jōnin.

Now, in ninja circles, A-rank missions were known for their unpredictable difficulty. A mission classified as "A-rank" might pit you against chūnin-level enemies... or a fully armed jōnin with a bad attitude. It was like reaching into a mystery box—you could pull out a cute kitten or a venomous snake.

S-rank missions, on the other hand, were their own special brand of chaos. These could involve fighting elite jōnin, Kage-level shinobi, or some mythical beast that could make a tailed beast blush. The range was absurd.

Luckily for Tonari, the details of this A-rank mission were unusually clear.

His destination was a bustling town on the border of the Land of Fire, near the Land of Grass and the Land of Waterfalls. The issue? A river monster had been terrorizing the area, snacking on anyone foolish enough to approach the water.

The mission, commissioned by the town's wealthiest families, came with a sweet payout of 800,000 ryō—generous even by A-rank standards. And with Konoha's intelligence confirming the threat level, Tonari saw an opportunity.

Of course, he had ulterior motives. He wasn't entirely here for the money (though, let's be honest, 800,000 ryō could buy a lot of dango). This mission conveniently aligned with his personal errand of gathering cats for his soon-to-open cat café.

Yes, you heard that right. He was risking life and limb... for cats.

---

As Tonari zipped through the treetops, his diminutive companion—a miniaturized Two-Tails—perched on his shoulder.

"Why is it," Tonari grumbled, "that I don't know Flying Raijin Jutsu yet? Minato's going to show up soon, casually teleporting across the continent, and here I am, jumping through trees like some prehistoric ninja Tarzan."

The miniature Two-Tails, providing moral support in the form of a disdainful yawn, didn't bother to reply.

---

Soon enough, Tonari arrived at the designated river. The water rushed turbulently, hinting at danger lurking beneath the surface.

"This must be it," Tonari muttered, scanning the area. "Now, the question is... where's the big bad river monster hiding?"

He frowned. It wasn't like he could send a polite invitation for the creature to show itself. And even his mini-Two-Tails wasn't much help here; water dulled its chakra-sensing capabilities.

"This... is why every ninja team needs a pet snake," Tonari grumbled.

Summoning a swarm of serpents using Summoning Jutsu, he sent them slithering into the river to locate the beast. If this thing had the audacity to terrorize trade routes, it wouldn't hide for long.

Sure enough, it wasn't long before Tonari felt it. A surge of chakra erupted from the depths, accompanied by the unmistakable pulse of fear from his summoned snakes.

"Well," Tonari smirked, stepping onto the river's surface, "looks like we've got a customer."

A massive tentacle erupted from the water, lashing toward him with terrifying speed. Tonari leapt back, letting his shadow clone absorb the blow.

"Touché," Tonari mused. "Big, slimy, and aggressive. Definitely not a fish."

As more tentacles broke the surface, their smooth, sucker-free surfaces ruled out the possibility of an octopus.

"Interesting... it's not a cephalopod," Tonari murmured. "Well, let's see if this river monster enjoys a little... shock therapy."

Placing his hands on the river's surface, he unleashed a surge of lightning chakra. The water erupted in a web of electricity, instantly electrocuting the fish—and hopefully the monster.

---

The river boiled with electricity as countless fish floated to the surface, some fully cooked.

Tonari couldn't help but grin. "Dinner's ready! Now, where's my guest of honor?"

He didn't have to wait long. A massive shadow surged toward him, its tentacles crackling with—wait, was that lightning?

"Great," Tonari muttered. "The river monster knows how to play with electricity too. Just my luck."

Realizing that his usual approach wouldn't work, Tonari sighed. "Well, if we're escalating things..."

Reaching into his pouch, he retrieved a sealed scroll. Unfurling it with practiced precision, he summoned a peculiar, writhing mass of flesh—an experimental creation born of Uzumaki cells and Senju cells.

"Let's see what happens when science meets chaos," Tonari muttered, injecting the Senju cells into the wriggling mass.

The results were immediate. The cells reacted violently, expanding and mutating into a rapidly growing mass of wood-like branches.

Tonari tossed the mass into the river, where it began to expand exponentially. Within moments, an enormous tree erupted from the water, its sprawling branches forming an impassable barrier.

The once-hidden river monster, now perched atop the tree, was revealed in all its grotesque glory—a massive, semi-transparent jellyfish with dozens of electrified tentacles.

"Well," Tonari quipped, "this was not in the mission briefing."

Despite its intimidating size, the jellyfish was clearly struggling. Deprived of water, its movements were sluggish, and its electric attacks were weaker.

Tonari didn't waste time. Leaping onto the tree, he formed hand seals.

"Fire Style: Flame Bomb Jutsu!"

A roaring inferno engulfed the jellyfish, its slimy body sizzling under the heat.

As the flames consumed both the tree and the beast, Tonari watched with a mixture of awe and relief. The Senju-Uzumaki experiment had worked beyond expectations, though he made a mental note to never try it within Konoha's borders.

---

When the flames finally died down, Tonari stood on the ash-covered riverbank, staring at the massive, charred jellyfish carcass.

"Well," he muttered, wiping his hands on his robe, "I think we can call that mission accomplished. Now... let's go find those cats."

With a flick of his wrist, he summoned his serpents to help him round up the strays. After all, no amount of adventure could overshadow his ultimate goal—a thriving cat café back in Konoha.
