Chapter 7: Inhabitants of the Forest
Christopher walked along an imaginary path that crossed through thick vegetation, his attention to the environment was raised to more than 100% because he was now aware that Carnivorous Plants live in these forests.
At this moment he was preparing to fulfill the second mission given by a villager. In this case he had to find a certain magical creature whose territory was precisely the part of the forest where he was now exploring.
The mission is very important, he is willing to complete it no matter what the cost and he doesn't care if he doesn't receive any reward in return.
-According to the information you gave me, you should already be in this area- the mentioned area was a beautiful part of the forest; full of life and colorful vegetation.
It was more than obvious that he seemed to be looking for "someone" in particular, and it depends on that "someone" whether the mission is completed successfully or not. "There he is, the description matches, it's definitely that one," he exclaimed, now running between a bunch of large yellow mushrooms, and other large beautiful flowers of different sizes and colors.
He approached a tree, quite old, but the white leaves sprouting in large quantities from all its branches denoted its vitality.
Thick and strong trunk that emanated a lot of magical energy.
Christopher approached the tree, standing just a few feet in front of it. "Big sleeper, please, I'd like to talk to you, just for a moment."
He began to speak to the tree, which did not make the slightest movement.
But suddenly, a face appeared on the bark of its thick trunk. The face vaguely resembled the face of a wise old man, with protuberances like eyebrows. It had no eyeballs, but a magical whitish light shone in its beads.
He looked a little tired, but Christopher knew that a being that emanated a lot of magical energy must still be very healthy.
The Big Sleeper, with his flames as eyes, looked directly into Christopher's eyes, who smiled at him in a very sincere and friendly way.
-Young Human- he said addressing the person in front of him -it is strange that a human being is trying to communicate with me, but you are very corteus, you even asked for it please- his voice sounded like that of a quite wise and benevolent old man but incredibly deep, worthy of a magical being.
The voice of that magical creature exuded a sense of immense wisdom, a being whose existence, by law, should be respected.
-Okay...- he nodded at Christopher's request -I grant it, I have no problem giving you a little of my time. Tell me, what do you want from this old tree?-.
-This is the benevolent magical creature, Big Sleeper, it is just as he told me- he thought as a magical sensation enveloped him and all because of the words spoken by the Big Sleeper.
-First of all- Christopher scratched the back of his neck somewhat nervously- I was in the middle of a mission which consisted of the subjugation of a Goblin that has killed some people and very novice adventurers-.
The Big Sleeper was not disturbed in the slightest and only looked at him with marked interest.
-In the end it wasn't me who got rid of the Goblin but...- he sighed, internally he asked not to get into trouble. But he had to be honest and comment about the subjugation of the carnivorous plant, possibly it is part of the territory of this being -a carnivorous plant, apparently it has devoured many people... I'm truly sorry Big Sleeper- he bowed slightly as a sign of sincere apologies -but I also had to get rid of the plant, that's why Big Sleeper, I sincerely apologize for killing an inhabitant of your territory-.
For a brief moment the glow in the eye sockets of the great sleeper went out, as if he himself had closed his eyes, then they lit up again.
Christopher could feel his gaze boring into his entire being. "It's a shame," the Big Sleeper commented. Christopher could hear some sadness in the Big Sleeper's voice. "But it's also a relief."
I tilted my head in utter confusion, more than prepared for something reprimanding in the nature of this.
-That carnivorous plant has not only been eating all those people you mentioned, but also many small animals and magical creatures in my territory. It is a relief for the little ones because now they can walk more freely and play in peace.
I noticed that the magical creature also cared about the inhabitants of its territory, and I thought of a parallel with the city of Gignit. The territory of the Great Sleeper would be the city where the little animals and magical creatures live, with the Great Sleeper being the Governor.
-So, Big Sleeper- he said swallowing some saliva, it was true that from one point of view, he helped get rid of certain creatures which threatened the smallest inhabitants of this area of the forest - I would like to make a request to you, or rather to the small magical creatures that live in your territory-.
The Big Sleeper, though he didn't seem to be, showed quite a bit of interest in the human's request. What would he ask for? In fact, it was the first time a human had had a civilized conversation with him. "Tell me, young human," he decided to play along and see how far the situation would go.
-I would like to ask the little magical creatures if they would like to move to live near the big tree in Gignit City-
If he had eyebrows, the Big Sleeper would have raised them in pure surprise. And not because of the request, but because this young human was asking for it ''please''. Noting then that Christopher is a kind-hearted person.
-You have surprised me quite a bit, young human- speaking calmly, as he had been doing all along, the Great Sleeper moved a few of his branches. Simply to move them out of his field of vision and be able to observe in great detail the human who was willingly inviting the small magical creatures to live inside the city.
-Normally, someone of your race would simply come and take the creatures without further ado, in short, kidnap them, completely taking away their freedom and happiness. Although you may not believe it, all animals, creatures and magical beasts can feel emotions similar to yours to a greater or lesser extent, leaving them without freedom would make them sad-.
Christopher couldn't say anything to deny the cruel statement. What would he say? If everything mentioned was the purest truth - I'm so sorry - he felt that he should at least think about apologizing for all those creatures that right now are being used for entertainment or who knows what else.
-But you- putting a lot of emphasis on the last point, the Great Continuous Sleeper -it seems that you have no intention of taking away their beloved freedom or doing them the slightest harm, it is very strange-.
-Big Sleeper- Christopher called nervously, believing that the magic tree was thinking badly of him. Obviously it wasn't -I would never harm the smaller creatures, but... I admit that I have fought against magical beasts. But only against those that threaten the peace of my city...- perhaps what he said sounded a little hypocritical, he harmed some, but he didn't harm others.
In the end, whether big or small, they were still beasts and magical creatures.
The Great Sleeper is a magical creature of great wisdom and he did not blame Christopher for his actions or his way of thinking, as the same thing happened among magical creatures and beasts. In the end it was all about the survival of the fittest.
Still, he felt a deep interest about Christopher's intentions - young human, what is your name? -.
Christopher had to put aside all the nervousness he was subjecting himself to, this time the voice of the Great Sleeper sounded much kinder than it already was, in fact it even sounded somewhat curious -my name is Christopher, Christopher Hope, I am the son of the leaders of the city of Gignit-.
-I see- murmured the magic tree -then tell me Christopher, why do you want the small inhabitants of my territory to move to your city?- The Great Sleeper did not show any distrust, but he was very intrigued. Just by talking for a few moments with Christopher he could notice that the aforementioned did not possess malice in his being, but, even so, he at least wanted to know what he had planned for the little ones.
Christopher let her see the most sincere expression he could and decided to speak with nothing but the truth.
I take a seat right where she was -Big Sleeper, I think I have not expressed myself well, the request was made by a magical creature, the Dryad Dry, who lives in the world tree of this island-.
Although it didn't seem like it, the Great Sleeper was incredibly surprised; a Dryad was living in that city. That was another thing, the Great Sleeper didn't want to show that he felt any concern about what was in store for the little magical creatures. But now, knowing that a Dryad resides in the blessed great tree, he can calm down, because they never let anyone who lives within their territory suffer any harm or be bothered.
She has nothing to fear anymore, now she just wanted to talk a little. So she would continue with the same current line of conversation even if it is no longer necessary -tell me Christopher, the Dryad Dry, why does she want the little ones to live inside the city?-.
-In the city, there are only small spirits- she reminded all the spirits that inhabit her mother's garden and others that inhabit other parts of the city and especially the top of the Great Tree -we totally lack magical creatures. Dry says he needs them to make the tree grow, as far as I know, they are necessary for the Great Tree and its surroundings to be endowed with magic-.
The thing was like this, according to the dryad Dry, the presence of magical creatures was necessary at least in the area of the park so that the fauna and flora could establish themselves. There are little animals living in the park, such as: rabbits, squirrels, some deer and stags among others. But there is not a single magical creature and they are necessary to nourish the Great Tree and for it to continue growing.
Obviously this will not devour them or anything remotely like that, what will happen is that, due to the magical essence of the many creatures, the place will be nourished with magical energy, and the Great Tree will absorb only a small portion of it for its development.
-I see, you are quite right about that- he added in a low voice -it's no problem for me, besides, I think you'll be safer with the Dryad than out here- the magic tree showed a gesture of what seemed to be pleasure.
He concentrated and called everyone.
Suddenly, from between the bushes and arriving by air, a bunch of magical creatures and animals appeared on the scene. Christopher's face? He was torn between surprise and at the same time pure joy, he knew many of these magical creatures, but only through the illustrations provided by the books. Never, until now, had he had such a pleasant opportunity to see them so close, to the point that he even thanked Dry inwardly for having made the request.
I was fascinated by the scene, as there were even many small magical creatures that I had not had the good fortune to learn about until now, not even through books. One of them was a kind of monkey, but its body was completely made of greenish wood which exuded vitality. It had two horns on its skull, the horns seemed to be a pair of branches with some twigs growing from it, although without leaves. Its eyes were completely green.
Landing next to him was a rabbit, but not a normal one, this one was very different, starting with the most noticeable thing, which were its large ears. These were much larger and longer than the ears of a normal rabbit, in fact, it was even as big or bigger than its own body.
His ears did not have any fur, but rather plumage.
He used his ears as wings to fly through the vast sky, he can reach great heights, the color of his ears/wings were distributed along them between white, greenish, reddish and bluish tones among other colors.
Its body was still that of a rabbit, although in some parts it had feathers, such as the back of its four legs, a collar of feathers surrounded its neck area and its pompous tail shared the fur with some feathers sticking out of them.
The little rabbit, known as the Winged Rabbit, was considered to be a magical and extremely beautiful beast. It is so docile that it is quite popular to have it as a pet, children want to have it because of the beauty and tenderness it radiates.
He was amazed by the beautiful creature in front of him, he looked to the side. Right towards the branches of the Great Sleeper where if he focused his sight he could see small magical creatures, about the size of his middle finger.
At first glance they seemed to be flowers, but looking more closely he realized that they were not. The aforementioned flowers were small forest Pixies, there are countless varieties of these creatures, the most well-known being those from the forest. Only one of those Pixies had enough courage to approach him, and from its appearance and constitution he could deduce that it was a female Pixie.
The small body clearly indicated that she was female, she seemed to wear flower petals as clothing, like dresses, with the petals covering her lower legs. Sleeves also made of tiny petals covered her arms, leaving only her hands free, and it is noticeable that the little Pixie's skin is greenish.
Her legs, greenish, had small spines which started from the calf and went down to before reaching the ankle area. She was barefoot and her tiny toes were visible, although barely. Behind her were two pairs of wings, two on each side, which seemed to be living leaves moving with the flapping of the beautiful magical creature.
Her face was completely pink, matching her hair, although only if the hair is actually pink flower petals and can be called hair. Two small, almost imperceptible antennae sprouted from her forehead.
Their ears, pointed, were very similar to those of Fairies, although the Pixies seemed to have elongated flowers as ears.
Finally, a tender face with large black eyes, lacking iris, observed them as if they were investigating him, analyzing every inch of his integrity.
Little Pixie circled around Christopher and when she apparently decided there was no danger, she decided to come down and rest on top of his head.
Christopher smiled a little funny, remembering the spirits that live in his mother's garden - something tells me that if the little ones saw this scene they would be very jealous.
The Pixie laughed and her laughter seemed to be little bells ringing.
Something that caught his attention were the flowers located at the side of his feet, they began to move. They rose and a face emerged from the ground, that face had eyes which when opened revealed red eyes that blinked a couple of times before emerging completely.
Small body, almost as big as your own forearm.
Two protuberances like ears, a pile of leaves on their heads and in the middle of these the purple flower that had been on the ground just moments ago was growing. Their lower parts were completely covered in something similar to moss, and finally three pairs of claws like fingers.
They were the small Terrestrials, these were making holes underground, indirectly helping the circulation of vitamins and minerals through the soil.
Christopher found himself surrounded by many small magical creatures, some cute and others more playful. The most striking were the last three, but these were not magical creatures, they were magical beasts.
Three great magical beasts.
The first and smallest of the three, a Stone Fox, for obvious reasons and as the name indicates this magical beast was a fox whose integrity was made completely and purely of stone.
Although it had some peculiarities, such as, for example, the stone tail was completely covered by small plants, it seemed to be grass, although quite fine. Another area covered by the same vegetation were the tips of its ears.
Other peculiarities were that certain parts of the body were disconnected, so to speak, from the main body. For example, the ears floated immovably and catatonically a few centimeters from the head, the right front leg was separated at the level of the joints of what was the elbow.
There were many cracks on the body, which suggested that it had been around for many years. Its eyes were more like dark holes in its face. Its nose was grey, as was the whole body, not including the area with vegetation. Finally, a few rocks that were not part of its body were floating around it.
Christopher felt like those eyeless eye sockets were analyzing, observing and judging him from head to toe.
His attention moved to the second of the trio of magical beasts. A deer, much larger than the Stone Fox, a Wooden Antler Deer. A majestic deer with dark brown fur and a pattern of spots on all four limbs and back.
Above the head were a large number of antlers, shaped like roots. They were quite long, and what stood out were the flowers that sprouted from them and the multitude of completely black butterflies that fluttered around them.
-I can feel a large current of magical energy coming from that magical beast, it is dangerous- was the first thought as he looked at the majestic magical beast, then trying to get the idea out of his head, it was not the time to think about these things.
He noticed once again those completely blue eyes, they looked at him with tremendous calm. She moved her ears and snorted in a very good way as if saying "I'm watching you" and for some reason Christopher let a drop of sweat fall quite nervously just at the moment he noticed the third and largest of the three magical beasts.
A huge and rather intimidating bear, although just by looking at it, Christopher knew that it was no ordinary bear. It was at least three metres tall, and he was sure that it could grow at least another metre.
Its dark jet-black fur highlighted the pair of tremendous eyes that shone with a whitish glow, and on its back, abdomen and limbs were patterns of curvilinear yellowish stripes which at the end connected to its claws.
Christopher raised his eyebrows as he looked at the yellowish patterns with marked interest, coming to a certain conclusion - definitely - he said to himself - this magical beast is capable of using lightning magic... golden lightning, at that - it was here that he felt some fear. And even more so when slight sparks ran through the long, large antlers that protruded from the head of this magical beast, a Long-antlered Bear Guardian of the Forest.
On each side of the skull there were two pairs of strong antlers, the front ones being small compared to the back ones. They were as big as the Longhorn Deer's. And they grew back longer and longer. From time to time small golden electric rays ran from one end to the other. The same with its large claws.
-Definitely, of the three magical beasts, without a doubt this is the strongest. I must not make them angry, I will not be able to defeat them-.
The tremendous magical beast let out a roar, seeming to be in a very bad mood. But the Great Sleeper seemed to have interrupted it.
-It is not like that, my good friend, there is no need to worry, I trust him- Christopher could hear how the Great Sleeper spoke to the bear, there he understood that the Great Sleeper seemed to understand the magical beasts.
He continued: -The little ones will be safe, this young human is different from the others. He respects the integrity and life of other creatures, I can feel it-.
-Grr, grrr, grrr-.
-Sniff, nuff, niniff-
-Gria, grrrr, nifnif-.
The three beasts seemed to be communicating with the Great Sleeper, Christopher was truly shocked. Never in his life did he expect to see this, beasts communicating! Speaking, so to speak!
The big sleeper was the intermediary between them.
"I understand your concerns," the Great Sleeper spoke again, addressing the three magical beasts, "but you also have to understand that the growth and development of the world tree would be very beneficial for the forest and for all of us."
Christopher gulped, watching as the three magical beasts looked at each other as if they were having a conversation. They then turned to stare at him.
He could feel as if he was being judged for something, the piercing gazes of the trio of magical beasts intimidated him a little. The largest one, the Long-antlered bear guardian of the forest once again turned its attention towards the Great Sleeper, growling/speaking at him.
The Big Sleeper turned his full attention to him, gently moving his branches and nodding with words -I understand and you are right, young Christopher- he called him, making the aforementioned's shoulders tense almost imperceptibly. -My friends say that there will be no problems, as long as no one hurts the little ones-.
The trio of magical beasts snorted with authority, “but…” Christopher narrowed his eyes, hoping there was some sort of condition.
...
Just when Christopher decided to face the Goblin, someone had woken up in his room.
-Hnnn- this person could barely stay awake. He rubbed his eyes, and looked to the side just as the faint moonlight illuminated part of his body.
Long pointed ears, beautiful well-groomed golden hair. Skin as white as snow. She looked at the bed next to her, at her brother. "Christopher, I want water," she said in a whisper.
Selestia, the Elf who ten years ago became part of the family, Selestia Salesian Hope.
Selestia, also fifteen years old, called out to her brother again, this time raising her voice -Christopher! Can't you hear me?-.
He uncovered himself completely, trying to wake up his brother; he would bring him a glass of water no matter what.
He got out of bed and stood up, revealing his current attire, loose sleepwear, the bottoms being white pants and the tops being a short-sleeved shirt.
-Christopher, wake up- she said, moving him, pretending to uncover him only to realize that no one was sleeping there.
-Grrr- he growled, pretending to be some dangerous beast, the drowsiness died ipso facto. His face transfigured into one denoting annoyance -he's gone on a mission in the middle of the night again- he sighed, frowning -and without me-.
-How many times have I told him that I want to go too, I've even scolded him. When I get back I'll make sure to record it in his head- in this way Selestia prepared to leave the house and head to the outskirts, first, she changed her clothes. She couldn't go out to the city like this, she is a member of the ruling family of the city and can't be seen in pajamas, her current clothes were almost transparent. Only her brother saw her like that because she trusted him blindly.
Now, her clothes consisted of black stretch pants, a white long-sleeved shirt. On her feet were sandals with rather high soles, very feminine, and her hair tied in a ponytail. She went out to wait for her brother to return so she could scold him, already thinking about having breakfast outside.
-As punishment- I murmured between laughs, already thinking about food as I walked through the almost empty streets of the city -he will have to pay for my breakfast-.
...
-...but- Christopher gulped -in case the little ones get hurt, they- the Great Sleeper said referring to the trio of magical beasts -will attack any unwary people wandering around the forest- Christopher raised an eyebrow, believing that the beasts would do something like attack the city.
-Magical creatures and beasts are not as stupid as one thinks, they know in advance that if they attack your city they will be exterminated no matter how much they fight, but if they attack the unwary they will get away with it- declared the Great Sleeper as Christopher gulped, impressed by the reasoning ability of the beasts.
He couldn't afford to underestimate her.
She sighed and tried to calm down, she thought for a moment - why do I worry? If we don't want to sell them, we just want them to help the big tree - she looked back at the quartet smiling - don't worry, we really have no intention of harming them, as I told you, everything is for the growth and development of the Great Tree of the city -.
The Great Sleeper commented this to his companions who did not make any noise - Young Christopher, there will be no problems, I will communicate your intentions to all the small creatures and all those who want to go will be more than welcome by the Dryad of the Dry-.
-Likewise- Christopher looked truly happy because his missions were finally over. He indirectly got rid of the Goblin and now made a deal with the Great Sleeper. As a bonus he eliminated the carnivorous plant, although he may not be rewarded for this. He watched as the trio of magical beasts who no longer had anything else to do proceeded to withdraw from the place, perhaps to patrol the territory.
-A unique experience-.
-Young Christopher- the Great Sleeper called again- it is most likely that as the days go by, the small magical creatures will infiltrate your city, they will be attracted by the magical energy of the Dryad-.
-Perfect- Christopher replied with total joy -I'll let Dry know so he can keep an eye out. Then Big Sleeper, I'll stop bothering you and I'll be leaving. I'm a little hungry and I'd like to get back before my sister wakes up and scolds me for not telling her I was leaving- he muttered that last part very quietly so as not to be heard. He turned around looking for the main path to return to the city gates.
The little magical creatures watched him pass, moving out of his way so he could pass without any inconvenience, but his name was mentioned one last time - Young Christopher - the Great Sleeper called him one last time, Christopher turned to him - please, never stop being a good person -.
Christopher smiled and nodded. "SURE!" He didn't know exactly what the Great Sleeper was referring to, but if a being as wise as the Great Sleeper was, he thought he was a good person. The least he could do was to reciprocate that thought.
-Someday I would like to visit the Great Tree- thought the wise magical creature to himself -I wonder if I will be welcome- suddenly, the Great Sleeper felt like a magical current coming from the direction of the city had arrived and penetrated through his roots.
It felt good, until he could hear a feminine voice speak to him - you are more than welcome, Big Sleeper.
The aforementioned immediately knew who it was, the Dryad Dry, who using Arboreal Magic communicated through all the roots underground with the great sleeper making it very clear that he would be welcome.
-Thank you very much- she replied in her thoughts before trying to sleep a little more.
The sun's rays hit her face and she had to raise one of her arms to cover herself -I didn't make it in time, Selestia is surely already awake- she thought for a moment about her sister and the imminent reprimand she would receive for not having invited her to go on her mission -she must be very angry, she will surely scold me like never before-.
On his back he carried not only his sword, but also the one the Goblin had. He would use it to confirm that he got rid of the Goblin, on his waist one of the large leaves of the carnivorous plant, in case subduing it was a mission he would also charge for that.
-Ouch- he complained, right in the upper part of his back he felt a prick which only grew worse becoming quite annoying -Damn, did a bug get into me? But when?- he brought both arms back and did everything he could to curl up.
But the seemingly insect was not about to be squashed.
The apparent insect moved from the lower part of the back to the upper part and this was driving Christopher crazy. To top it off, the "insect" went to the front -damn insect- he exclaimed furiously scratching himself hard, but it was in vain, the insect continued doing its thing.
When the itching reached the point where it was totally unbearable, he finally decided to face the damn insect and teach it a very good lesson. He stretched the collar of his clothes and something that seemed to have wings shot out at a good speed -I got you?-.
He was somewhat surprised and confused at the same time when he noticed the appearance of the small "insect" which was now fluttering a few centimeters in front of him, rapidly flapping its wings that seemed to be tree leaves.
-You're the Pixie! How did you get under my clothes without me noticing? - he tried to remember the last time he saw her and when she got under his clothes. It was impossible because the clothes were apparently above his head the whole time -you're very agile, quite a lot I'd say-.
The Pixie seemed to be talking to him, as he saw the little girl moving her lips, although they only made the characteristic sound as if they were little bells. The Pixie kept fluttering around him, she seemed to be telling him a lot of things in her language, unfortunately Christopher could not understand her.
He seemed somewhat enthralled by the flapping of the wings of this cute and adorable magical creature - shouldn't you be going back to your friends? I think the Great Sleeper will let them know when it's time for them to come to the city, so in the meantime you should be with them - something that wasn't said but was obvious was that the Great Sleeper would decide when it's time for the magical creatures to arrive in the city.
Laughing, Christopher watched as the little magical creature shook her head rapidly in denial, realizing that she apparently understood him. He felt a bit frustrated as he wished he could understand the Pixie. He realized there was no point in trying to get her to come back.
-Well, okay. I see that there is no point, besides I highly doubt that you want to come back, just don't separate from me, okay? I wouldn't like anything bad to happen to you- he let the Pixie appreciate one of his smiles, then the little girl burst into happiness approaching his face hugging him and pinching him in the process.
-Ouch, ouch wait- he complained in pain feeling how once again the protruding thorns from the Pixie's legs were embedded in his face.
Suddenly he heard something, "hm?" he turned his attention to the foliage of the forest. In the distance he could hear some strange noises. "A fight?" he muttered under his breath with the idea that a fight was happening deep within. "No."
He frowned, the first thing that came to mind was that once again the bandits and slavers were up to their tricks, attacking anyone trying to visit the city.
-Pixie...- he called her very seriously, in fact, he didn't know what else he would call her because if he asked her name he was sure that she would be able to answer him or rather he wouldn't be able to understand her -hold on very tight and don't come out- he flexed his legs slightly.
-Sound Magic: Field of Silent (Field of Silence)-.
Using the magic spell of the field of silence, he began to run through the foliage. Since the magic was active, his steps and all the sound he made when brushing against the plants were completely suppressed, so he could get closer without being noticed by potential enemies.
