Chapter 47, But We Told You the Truth

(Day 174) Aprilis 20th, 12th year of the Dragon, Age of Enlightenment

For the last 7 days, Mayzier had enjoyed himself thoroughly. These two nobles from the north had proved to be strong-willed and refused to give up. He preferred it when those he tortured had the will to live. The look in their eyes when he finally had permission to snuff out their lives. He grew excited just thinking about it. Today he’d been using hot irons until the iron cooled, then he’d rip it away, taking the skin with it. When they were just about dead he’d offer them a healing potion which they’d drink, then he’d give that person a break as he moved on to the next. He had been warned not to completely break their mind or kill them. They had after all sworn allegiance to The Council. They claimed it wasn’t their fault that they failed. Mayzier thought about how many times the men and women given to him had claimed their failure wasn’t their fault, pathetic.

The Vizier walked into the torture room. “Release them, it is as they claimed. One man thwarted our plans, one man destroyed 100 of our best assassins, and one man will die before the end of this month. Make sure they’re fully healed then take them to a place where they can heal from their wounds. Though they failed in their mission, they were the first to arrive and report this new threat, even if it was unintentional.”

“As you will Vizier” Mayzier responded as the Vizier departed. Two guards stepped into the room and Mayzier helped the guards pick up the men he’d been torturing and escort them to their rooms. Once they were gone Mayzier went to the Mission Planning Room where a group of Acolytes was reviewing what they’d learned.

“There is nothing like this man,” an Acolyte stated flatly.

“Eyewitness reports state that he killed each and every one of the assassins taking the castle and surroundings in less than an hour. The only reason it took that long was because he systematically searched each and every building. The actual time to kill each assassin was much less. Multiple reports state the assassin was moving toward them then suddenly there was a hole in their chest, and they were looking at their heart on the ground in front of them,” Another Acolyte said.

“The witness we found about Desirae. Both her lieutenants heard the screaming, took up a defensive perimeter then waited. The Lieutenants were reduced to ash as Desirae jumped away while mage spells rained down on them from above before a vortex opened and sucked her and someone floating above her into it and closed. Soon after, within no more than a half-hour, he was back and helped the loyal guards subdue the traitors. The ones that continued to fight were fed to the dungeon. The guards that surrendered are no longer trusted and are being used as slaves to clean up the city and repair the damage that was done.” A third Acolyte stated.

“Has anyone made it close enough to Analyze him?” Mayzier asked.

“Yes. They fail every time. His resistance to magic must be so near to 100% or 100% that it doesn’t matter.” The first Acolyte answered.

“Do we have a plan on how to kill him?” Mayzier asked.

“We do, but it will require a little more time to prepare.” The second Acolyte said.

“Then we have a mission, make it happen while I report to the Vizier.”
