Chapter 50: Chapter 43 Cursed Spirits
Dante's eyes instantly opened. The abrupt awakening left his brain blundering to catch up like a computer struggling to render a high-resolution image. He inhaled a deep breath of the cold air, feeling his lungs expand as he tried to shake off the grogginess.
As he stretched and yawned, the stiffness of sleeping slowly faded away, replaced by a renewed sense of awareness. The low hum of the air conditioner buzzed in the background, reminding him of the outside world.
Gradually, his senses began to recalibrate themself, aligning with reality once more, and the room seemed to come alive with subtle details: the creaking of the floor, the distant whirr of traffic outside, and the faint glow of the sun seeping through the curtains.
Quickly scanning the house, he couldn't shake the feeling that the house now felt undeniably empty, as if a sixth sense whispered to him that the other person was gone.
I grabbed some coffee out of the system and started to relax, enjoying the house's quietness and the comforting coffee's aromatic warmth. "Alright, The plan is to use that finger to attract the creatures and farm xp." thought Dante inside his mind.
He grabbed a note from the desktop and stuck it on the computer monitor, carefully leaving it to inform her about his whereabouts. "I'll be outside investigating. Dunno where you are at but take care, I should be back at night and if I'm not that means either I'm dead or I found whatever I was searching for. Note: I'll be taking the finger with me."
Before leaving, he walked near the mirror. The vibrant colors of his rainbow hair caught his attention. They could work as a possible beacon in the darkness, revealing his position. "I don't look Japanese, and this rainbow hair won't help me either." He went to Sora's closet in search of something to hide his hair. He ended up grabbing a hooded sweatshirt, "Better!" he muttered under his breath.
Grabbing a backpack he found lying there, Dante exited the department, leaving in search of how to sense those invisible things and learn about them. He asked in his mind, "System, can't you give me the ability to sense them or something similar?"
The system replied with a dry "No." quickly shutting any hopes he had. "it was worth the shot. Is there a way to learn how to see them?"
Surprisingly, the system gave him a helpful answer, "Train your sixth sense or learn an ability related to it." This answer left him wondering how he does that.
Dante kept walking as far as possible from the houses, trying to find the forest he came from. Tangling normal humans with his affairs and problems wouldn't be good. He doesn't know if the government has knowledge about these creatures. In this reality, the country might be his enemy in this place. Heck, there might be a secret cult or organization that takes care of these spirits. Better do it on the outskirts of the forest without calling much attention.
After being confident that he was really far away, he opened the box, placing the finger in his hands, and because the box couldn't be saved, Dante decided to keep it in his backpack near the mysterious dagger he found.
In the midst of the desolate forest through the dense foliage, Dante stood motionless, with his senses heightened at max alert. The sound of the rustling leaves told him the spirits were lurking nearby, but not seeing them made the job a total ordeal.
Dante flexed his wings nervously, trying to get his blood flowing. Deep inside his mind, there was an anticipation building.
Suddenly, he felt a cold breeze brush against his skin as if they were trying to strangle him, instantly realizing they were already at him. "That was fast," commented Dante to them.
Before he could retaliate, a sharp pain invaded his stomach. His jacket began being marked by a claw, showing the spirits already had a grip upon him.
Instinctively, Without making any fancy move, he crushed his skull into the air. A resounding crack filled the place, and quickly he kicked the air as fast as he could. "Not knowing if this fuckers are dead is tedious," he muttered to himself.
Surrounded by enemies, Dante's primitive instincts kicked in. His eyes darted around In hopes of seeing if there was an improvement in his detection skills, yet nothing changed.
Dante could feel his heart pounding in his chest, not with fear, but with an adrenaline rush. "I can't believe it, but I'm feeling alive in this dire situation... What kinda of person was my past me?"
Without conscious thought, his feet began to move, and Dante took a fighting stance without even knowing it. His movements turned more light and agile. Each step he took was a small hop, a skip, a jump, allowing him to move quickly and efficiently.
Dante's senses heightened even further with this. The adrenaline-fueled fight reached its crescendo, and he found himself in a state of heightened awareness. Every rustle of leaves, every subtle change in the air, became a signal for his next move.
The spirits lunged at him in hopes of swarming him. Somehow, Dante managed to begin "FEELING" them, discovering that their movements were predictable, only launching themself head-on without any sign of intelligence.
He sidestepped to launch a fierce kick, with his body moving instinctively. Each time he dodged, it was followed by a swift counterattack, mostly by his legs, which covered more range than his fist, making it harder to miss.
He couldn't help but taunt, "I might be surrounded, but y'all are pathetically weak..." With his smile increasing each second, Dante kept launching punches and kicks.
His confidence was growing, and so was his arrogance. Now, he felt ready to face whatever came his way. He was not just surviving. He was thriving in the face of adversity. Facing adversity was no longer a daunting challenge; it was a stage for his prowess. His past self might have been a mystery, but his present self was molding into a fighter.
Dante felt his muscles straining as he struggled. He could feel their icy breath on his skin, their invisible claws raking his flesh. Yet this would be a breeze if this was what this world offered. Dante commented to the spirits, "And Here I thought this would be harder, you can barely hurt me-"
He fell silent without finishing his sentence. His eyes froze at the sight he caught. Recently, he started to sense them more and more, to the extent of even catching semi-invisible glimpses of them, yet... this one could be seen normally.
A grotesque creature, babbling incoherently, stood before him, showing him a pitiful display. He sounded sad and desperate as if he wanted to die... "What are you?" Dante queried, knowing silence would be his only response.
The creature leaped towards him, and with practiced ease, Dante dispatched it." for a second, I thought you were like their boss, but you are just like the others... Weird." This left Dante wary; these are a bit stronger than the last ones... could they be a variant? Do they get smarter? Acquire abilities?
As he tried to answer the questions, like a premonition, he quickly turned around to punch whatever was there. He decided to keep killing the variants even if he had so many questions.
A gruesome scene now filled the forest. His hands began dripping with blood and tissues from these creatures. The clothes he wore were now a bit ragged and tainted with blood.
The fight continued monotonously for minutes till Dante was startled by a heavy presence. The small fries that were attacking him stopped coming, and a new presence presented itself.
It was like a thick fog, stronger and more palpable, sending my senses to maximum alert. I stepped back, my eyes darting around, searching for any sign of danger. But there was nothing. Just the silence of the night and the cold wind that blew through the trees
And yet, I knew that I wasn't alone. The presence was still there, lurking near him.
------
I already want to finish this arc, to finally write "them."
Guess who his first important fight will be? Also, remember the "ceremonial dagger." it will be important.
And about him imitating combat techniques, as I said earlier, he is only IMITATING!
They help him, but it is more like a placebo effect. Against someone who actually knows how to use them, he is gonna get destroyed (in skills.)
(Yes I know. Sorry for the late updates, but I was busy playing with my friends.) (I also felt like the chapter could have been more but I got no time.)
