Chapter 26: Vulpix
"So, that's how it is. Since there are no more Pokémon for me to capture, I'll be on my way, Mr. Moore. Goodbye."
With that said, Yuga prepared to leave with Absol and Floette.
Seeing that the young man before him wasn't disheartened by the fruitless trip, Moore felt his attitude was commendable, and his impression of him unknowingly improved.
Little did he know, this was just a facade. Yuga had already captured three Pokémon on Mt. Chimey.
Suddenly, Moore thought of something and said to Yuga, who was about to leave, "How about this? Choose one of my Pokémon as a gift for our first meeting."
He gestured towards the Pokémon in the volcano crater.
Moore decision to gift Yuga a Pokémon stemmed from his belief that, given Yuga age, his discernment might not be keen enough to identify the promising qualities in his Pokémon.
After all, even though many of his Pokémon had green and blue potential, they were mainly red, orange, and yellow potential ones.
Amidst the green and blue potentials, they were somewhat plentiful, but in the presence of the dominant red, orange, and yellow potentials, they seemed as inconspicuous as a drop in the ocean.
In this context, Moore didn't believe Yuga luck could be so good.
As a top-tier Trainer, it was no big deal to give away a red, orange, or yellow potential Pokémon.
Moore would never have imagined that there was a creature in this world known as a "freeloader," and Yuga before him was one such being.
Upon hearing Moore words, Yuga eyes lit up. He stopped in his tracks and turned around, exclaiming in delight, "Really?"
With a chuckle, Moore replied, "Of course it's true, but you can only pick a young Pokémon. The higher-level ones might not easily listen to you."
Yuga hadn't anticipated this twist of events, grinning widely he said, "Thank you so much, Mr. Moore."
Observing Yuga joyous expression, Moore smiled and said, "Go pick a Pokémon then. Once you decide, I'll hand you its Poké Ball."
"Okay, sure."
With that, Yuga dashed to the edge of the volcano, activating his Insight ability, and scanned his gaze over the Pokémon below.
Under the Insight ability, the potential of these Pokémon was fully revealed, each one showcased in Yuga vision. However, he automatically filtered out the red, orange, and yellow potential Pokémon.
Green-potential Growlithe, green-potential Slugma, green-potential Magby... Blue-potential Growlithe, blue-potential Charmander...
High-potential Pokémon were aplenty, each one appearing exceptionally promising. Yuga was almost overwhelmed by the options.
After carefully considering his choices, Yuga ultimately settled on a green-potential Vulpix.
<
Gender: Male
Ability: Drought
Potential: Green
Level: 17
Moves: Power Swap, Will-O-Wisp, Flame Burst.
This Vulpix not only possessed excellent green potential, but it also had the hidden ability Drought.
In terms of moves, it was quite decent. Will-O-Wisp, as an indirect damage skill, was particularly useful. The power of Flame Burst was also impressive. Power Swap could come in handy for special situations.
Though the move pool was limited, the skills were all of high quality.
Pointing to a sleeping Vulpix by the side of the magma, Yuga said, "I'd like that Vulpix."
As for why Yuga didn't choose a blue-potential Pokémon, it was mostly due to maintaining some semblance of humility. It wouldn't be right to exploit someone generosity by solely targeting their prized possessions. Although there were blue-potential Pokémon present, they were relatively scarce.
Looking at Moore expression, it was evident that the mere selection of a green-potential Pokémon had disappointed him. If Yuga had chosen a blue-potential one, he might have thrown a tantrum.
Moore had never anticipated that he would unintentionally step on his own toes by allowing Yuga to pick a high-potential Pokémon. He was practically hemorrhaging internally at the thought.
Among the hundreds of Pokémon here, Moore couldn't remember which ones had red, orange, and yellow potential. However, he was crystal clear about those with green and blue potential.
Especially about this Vulpix. Although it wasn't a blue-potential one, it was still outstanding.
He had been planning to give it to his granddaughter after some time, but he didn't expect it to be chosen by a wild kid now.
Moore was now experiencing the classic "my cherished daughter got snatched by an outsider" feeling, even though the Vulpix was male.
"Oh, oh, so you want this one, huh? Haha... Haha... You've got a good eye."
Looking at Moore pained expression, Yuga almost felt like he had committed an unforgivable crime.
Moore recalled the sleeping Vulpix with his Poké Ball, then released it again in front of Yuga and himself.
The Vulpix opened its eyes, looking a bit bewildered from having just woken up, unaware of what had transpired.
"Vulpix, from now on, this person is going to be your Trainer. You better behave well."
As soon as it opened its eyes, Vulpix heard its owner say these words.
Turning its head to look at the person its owner was pointing to, Vulpix thought: This is going to be my new owner from now on.
It nodded in agreement towards Moore, with no hint of reluctance.
Although Moore was Vulpix owner, due to Vulpix not being raised as a primary Pokémon and its relatively short time under his care, it was more of a free-roaming companion. Vulpix usually didn't remember it had an owner.
Moore was aware of the simple reason behind Vulpix straightforward agreement, so it wasn't surprising. He retracted Vulpix into the Poké Ball again.
Extending his hand holding the Vulpix Poké Ball, Moore handed it to Yuga and said, "Take good care of this child from now on."
"Don't worry, Mr. Moore. I'll make sure to take good care of it."
Yuga accepted the Poké Ball from Moore, reassuring him. While he didn't intend to train Vulpix as his main battling Pokémon, he certainly wouldn't mistreat it.
With his objective accomplished, Yuga decided to bid farewell to Moore.
"Mr. Moore, I've got my Fire-type Pokémon now, so I'll be leaving."
"Are you headed back to Lavaridge Town?"
"Perfect, I'm headed back there as well. How about I give you a ride?"
With that, Moore recalled his Typhlosion and called his Charizard over, then mounted it from behind.
"You should come on over too."
Yuga hadn't anticipated the opportunity to ride on a King-level Pokémon. He promptly recalled his Floette and Absol with their Poké Balls.
"Sure, sure. Just give me a moment."
Saying that, Yuga hurriedly climbed onto Charizard back, sitting behind Moore.
