Chapter 13 - The Man from Marlen
The man who introduced himself as Rudvik, or Rud for short, said he was on his way to Evian.
Yona looked at Rud with suspicious eyes, as he claimed to have been lost and collapsed while on his way to Evian.
Even so, he looked too healthy for someone who had supposedly collapsed in the forest.
Despite saying he had been starving for days, he didn’t look particularly gaunt, nor did he seem to lack energy.
He said he had no injuries, so they assumed that was the case.
“Do you know of a place called Marlen?”
“Marlen?”
While Carlson, Miscott, Irin, and Viola all shook their heads in ignorance, only Yona nodded and said, “Ah.”
“You mean the place where the Celestial Deity supposedly descended, right?”
“You know it well. I come from Marlen.”
Marlen, huh.
Yona recalled her memories from her nun training.
The city famous for its four-directional ruins, Marlen.
The reason it’s in the past tense is because it’s now famous for a different reason.
The place where the Celestial Deity descended long ago.
The place where the descendants of the Celestial Deity settled and lived.
The place where the Celestial Deity defeated the false gods and preached the true faith.
She didn’t expect to hear the name of Marlen, famous for such reasons, here.
“I was an adventurer in Marlen. Well, I managed to reach Gold rank, at least.”
Gold rank, huh. He must be quite skilled.
At least there are no Gold rank skilled individuals in this Evian.
“But you said you’re a Champion, right?”
“That’s right. I am a Champion chosen by the Celestial Deity. They told me that the Demon King will soon awaken, and that Demon King will use the scattered demons as stepping stones to resurrect.”
Well, if such a thing existed, wouldn’t the Celestial Deity descend upon the Grand Cathedral and give an oracle instead of choosing a Champion?
No matter how you look at it, this man seems a bit mentally off.
“Well, whether you’re a Champion or not, I don’t have to believe it.”
Rud grinned.
His hair, too clean for someone who claimed to have been lost for days, swayed lightly in sync with his smile.
“Here, this is my adventurer’s badge. Look, it says Gold rank.”
Yona’s party huddled around to examine the adventurer’s badge Rud held out.
Indeed, it was engraved with the name Rudvik and the Gold rank emblem.
“Do you believe me now? That I’m a Gold rank adventurer.”
“…Well, why wouldn’t we believe it? You have the badge and all.”
Carlson seemed secretly impressed.
Some warrior he is, showing reverence just because he sees a strong warrior – Yona scoffed inwardly.
“So, what brings the great Champion and Gold rank adventurer all the way to this distant Evian?”
Yona felt somewhat displeased.
The word Champion was already nonsense, but this spear-wielding adventurer with his spear awkwardly slung over his back didn’t sit well with her.
Perhaps the reason was the slight lingering pain in her wrist.
At those words, Rud smiled again.
A big smile that showed his teeth, so refreshing it seemed to brighten even those who saw it.
“I came to get you.”
“…Huh?”
The surroundings suddenly fell silent.
The path, which had been rustling as they passed through the undergrowth, became quiet in an instant as the party members stopped walking.
“…You came to get me?”
As Yona pointed to her own nose in disbelief, Rud nodded freely.
As if to say there’s no need to ask twice, Rud said,
“The Celestial Deity said that the Saint would appear in this Evian. So I came to get you. The Celestial Deity is indeed never wrong, we met right away, didn’t we?”
Yona was dumbfounded.
“…Why am I the Saint?”
“I knew the moment you injected Holy Power into me. Ah, such a warm and gentle feeling.”
No, that’s because it’s healing, so of course it feels that way.
“I’m not a Saint, not a Priestess, I’m just a Healer, a Healer.”
“No, you are undoubtedly the Saint. I guarantee it.”
Rud’s smile didn’t waver in the slightest.
At this point, it was rather Yona who was flustered.
What on earth is he basing this confidence on that I’m the Saint?
“Hey, you guys say something too. He’s calling me the Saint.”
“Uh, um. Go on, go on.”
“What do you mean ‘go on’, you bastard! …And Rud, what exactly are you basing this on?”
“Isn’t it obvious? Such mastery of Holy Power, and this goddess-like beauty. What else could you be but the Saint?”
Yona’s face began to contort rapidly.
And seeing this, Miscott’s eyes sparkled, realizing he had found another way to tease Yona.
“I told you I was a man-! Don’t treat me like a woman-!”
Yona’s shout startled a mountain bird, causing it to flutter away.
*
It was just past noon when Yona, Rud, and the party members returned to Evian.
“What’s this? What’s going on?”
The front of the Adventurers’ Guild was packed with people.
For some reason, adventurers were gathered in droves, and Mary was standing on a platform, shouting something.
“Well, what could it be?”
As they approached, Mary’s voice became clearer.
“Come on- If you join now, Baron Cartein will double, double the reward-!”
Even so, the adventurers seemed hesitant.
And among them, Yona approached a particularly shiny individual and unceremoniously smacked that shiny head with a loud thwack.
“Ouch!”
“It’s shock therapy. To revive your hair roots.”
“You crazy bitch… Hey, how could you leave without saying anything?”
Alec looked Yona up and down, seeing her for the first time in three days.
She doesn’t seem to be hurt anywhere.
“It’s my choice. It’s your fault for not coming early. Anyway, what’s she saying?”
“They’re forming a subjugation team again, they say.”
“Subjugation team? For the Catacombs?”
“Yeah.”
Fortunately, none of Baron Cartein’s knights were harmed.
So they were able to quickly form a subjugation team again, but when they actually tried to form it, the adventurers wouldn’t volunteer.
Even though the adventurer’s life is always on the line, and it’s a gamble worth taking if they pay enough, it’s still true that nothing is more precious than one’s life.
With rumors spreading widely that many of the adventurers from the last subjugation team died or were injured, it would be difficult to recruit with ordinary compensation.
“Come on, two and a half times-! This is the limit!”
But as Mary’s voice rang out, the surroundings fell silent.
It was so quiet that you might even hear the sound of people swallowing if you listened carefully. In this silence, Yona turned around as someone tapped her shoulder.
“Oh, teacher!”
Eije was smiling brightly.
Dressed in proper clerical robes that covered her entire body as befitting a priestess, she had squeezed through these sweaty, dirty adventurers without hesitation to greet her disciple.
“Yona. Did your request go well?”
“Ah, yes, yes. I just got back. But why are you here, teacher…?”
Eije reached out and patted Yona’s head.
Her touch on Yona’s head, which only had hair, was infinitely gentle and motherly at first, but gradually her grip tightened until finally Yona let out a groan, “Ugh…”
“T-Teacher… It hurts…”
“It’s supposed to hurt. You, what happened to the veil?”
“…Ah.”
She forgot to buy a new veil.
She had gotten the holy cloth and returned happily, forgetting to buy a new veil.
“I, I lost… Ow ow ow ow ow!”
“A nun, losing her veil- Is this, how, I, taught, you?!”
“I’m sorry! Ow, ow! Ow ow ow ow ow!”
Eije, who had been gripping Yona’s head as if she was going to crush it, finally loosened her grip and let go of her head.
Only then did Yona whine, “Uwaaa,” and rub her head, exaggerating her pain.
“Bigrind and I will be going for the Catacombs purification. That’s why I’m here.”
“That re… I mean, Priestess Bigrind?”
“Yes. She’s over there.”
At the end of Eije’s pointing finger was the red-headed, mean-spirited priestess.
Those arrogant eyes that clearly showed she didn’t understand why she had to be here, providing eye candy for these dirty, sweaty, messy humans.
“…Why you, teacher? There are many youn… Ow ow ow!”
“You should purify your language, shouldn’t you?”
“Ah! Ow! Y-young prie… Ow ow ow ow!”
“Language purification.”
“Th-there are many junior priests, aren’t there?!”
Alec took a step back, looking at Eije with terrified eyes as she dusted off her hands as if nothing had happened.
A person who can manhandle even the great Yona like catching a mouse.
Scary.
“It seems like an important matter, you see. Would you like to come along too?”
At that gentle tone, Yona pouted her lips.
This is pretty much like having no choice, isn’t it?
“I guess I have to… Hey, Alec. You’re coming too, right?”
“…If you’re going, I have to go too.”
Quite a number of names were written on the subjugation team participant list.
For adventurers, they’re always risking their lives anyway, and if they pay enough, it’s a gamble worth taking.
“Whatever, if we don’t die, it’s all good.”
“That’s right.”
And Alec and Yona’s names were added to that list as well.
“Next, please?”
Mary, sitting at the registration desk, called for the next person.
Instead of an answer, a long shadow was cast over her head.
“…Who are you?”
She looked up because of this, but the brown-haired man was a face she had never seen before in this Evian Adventurers’ Guild.
“Rudvik. Gold rank spearman.”
Rud flashed that refreshing smile of his.
The adventurer’s badge he tossed down casually rolled in front of Mary.
