I’m Not a Saint, Not a Priest, Just a Healer.

Chapter 1 - A slightly crazy healer

This damn world doesn’t even have curtains. If there’s fabric to make curtains, these commoners’ lives are about making clothes to wear or sell. So it can’t be helped. At least give me a door panel to close it off. With the wide open space and no door panel, they just extend the eaves to block the rain. That’s the extent of it.

Yona opened her eyes to the direct sunlight beating down on her closed eyelids. Even though she had just been deep in sleep, her eyes seemed to have already adjusted to the sunlight, so it didn’t feel glaring.

“Damn it…”

Letting out a cursory swear as usual, Yona got out of bed. As she stretched out long with a groan, cracking sounds came from various places, but this was normal routine by now. Yona picked up the pitcher by her bedside and gulped down some water, then went to the bathroom to wash her face.

She grabbed the comb next to the sink and haphazardly combed through her hair. Her dull, lackluster hair had tangled strands that would catch in the comb each time.

“Ow! …Ah shit.”

Yona grimaced at the pain of a few strands being pulled out. The sting, the stinging sensation.

She roughly patted her face dry with a face towel and came back into the room. A bed stuffed full of straw. A table crudely assembled from roughly processed wood that creaked with every little thing placed on it. And carelessly tossed on top of it, a long strip of cloth.

“Ugh. Hope I can safely earn my food again today…”

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. A warm energy stirred around her lower abdomen and spread through her whole body. Thankfully, she still had her holy power left today. If she lost that, she’d starve to death.

Yona inwardly sighed with relief as she took down the nun’s habit hanging on the wall and sloppily put it on.

“Please let me safely eat again today~” she hummed.

The loosely put on nun’s habit got caught on her large breasts, not going down any further.

“Damn it, these useless big tits…”

This had been going on for 3 years now, but it still annoyed her every time she put clothes on.

Still grumbling, Yona somehow managed to get the nun’s habit on properly. At least it covered up reasonably well, she thought.

It wasn’t like those outfits that always showed up in web novels or webtoons…those “is she a saint or a prostitute?” kind of outfits. Thank goodness, this was a proper nun’s habit that was entirely covered in black fabric, except for the right arm.

The nun’s habit Yona wore had the entire right arm exposed from the shoulder down.

“Alright…then.”

She picked up the cloth carelessly tossed on the wooden table. It was too narrow to really be called a cloth, more like a long strip of bandage material. At one end of the cloth was a small hole, probably meant to attach it to something.

Yona clipped that hole onto a clasp on the right shoulder area of her nun’s habit. Then she began winding the cloth tightly around her right arm.

Before long, her right arm was completely and tightly wrapped without gaps in the grayish-white cloth.

After putting on the veil that went with the nun’s habit, her preparations were complete.

“Alright, let’s go.”

If categorized by size, Ebiane would be considered a medium-sized city. It was situated in the center with surrounding small towns as satellites. So there was a constant flow of people coming and going, making the city very lively and the adventurer’s guild quite bustling as well.

Thud.

The wooden door of the adventurer’s guild opened abruptly, casting a long shadow. A shadow with long hair down to the waist, wearing a veil over the hair. Just from that shadow, the people inside the guild immediately knew who it was.

“I’m here, you brats.”

The shameless swearing.

From the moment Yona entered the guild, she reveled in the stares that instantly turned towards her.

“Yona, still healthy from drinking that cow’s milk?”

“Crazy bitch, but I won’t give it to you either.”

“How stingy.”

Yona loudly smacked the back of the bald adventurer Alec’s head as he tossed out that cheeky joke.

“I’m stingy, you brat? I was originally a man, you know? You want to take it from someone who used to be a man?”

“If you offer, I’d gratefully take it?”

“Not giving it, you brat.”

People laughed boisterously as Yona flatly rejected him.

The slightly mentally unstable healer who insists she used to be a man – that was how Yona was referred to in this adventurer’s guild.

Not just that, but the somewhat crazy healer who claims she came from some distant other world – that was another way Yona was described.

“Hello, Noona Yona.”

“Don’t call me noona.”

Mary greeted Yona with a bright smile. As always, Yona frowned at being called noona, but it was a trivial matter.

“Those breasts strongly proclaim you’re a woman though, Noona?”

“No…it’s not that I’m a man now, but that I was originally a man before-!”

“Okay okay, I got it. But anyway, there still aren’t any parties looking for a healer.”

“Damn, what are those adventurer brats up to not taking jobs?”

“That’s true. But you’re not the kind of healer to just tag along with any random adventuring party, right Noona?”

Yona frowned at those words.

She couldn’t just join up with any party willy-nilly. She did have some standards after all.

“Healers are in short supply these days. Just wait a bit, Noona. There is a job request right now too.”

“A job request? Oh, got it.”

Yona silently turned away from Mary. If the receptionist Mary said it like that, it must be a delicate situation she couldn’t outright talk about.

“Hey Alec, did another healer die or what? I don’t see some of the regular faces.”

“Yeah, one more died yesterday they said. The vanguard he was healing got taken out together in one blow.”

The bald Alec had a knack for gathering all sorts of information through his connections.

The receptionist Mary was limited in what she could divulge, but Yona could get that inside scoop through Alec.

“What were they doing when it happened?”

Information was important. What they were doing, what enemy they were facing – Yona needed to know those details to be cautious.

Alec cleared his throat loudly and scratched his Adam’s apple. Seeing that, Yona frowned again.

“Okay, I got it you brat. Playing hard to get. Mary! A mug of ale over here!”

“Drinking first thing in the morning?”

“Not for me, for this brat Alec! Maybe the yeast will help his brain!”

Another round of laughter erupted in the guild hall. Mary also laughed at Yona’s words, and shortly after, a mug of ale was placed in front of Alec. Foam bubbled over the top of the ale mug.

Seeing that, Yona felt an urge to have a refreshing mug herself, but she shook her head. What good would a drunk healer be? If she ended up going into a dungeon, she needed a clear mind to properly use healing arts.

So Yona could only watch as Alec chugged down the refreshing ale.

“So, spill it now.”

After setting down the half-empty mug, Alec made a sound and wiped the foam from his lips, leaving a long streak.

“That underground dungeon over in the west, you know.”

“There’s more than one underground dungeon over there?”

“The Catacombs, I mean the Catacombs.”

The Catacombs. The underground western dungeon area called the Catacombs. It had already been pretty much cleared out of valuables long ago.

“What were they trying to loot there? Seems like a picked-over place by now.”

“Hey, this young lady…”

“Young lady, you brat?”

Yona’s eyes narrowed at being called a young lady. But no matter how you looked at it, she was definitely a young lady. Moreover, if she just kept her mouth shut, she could probably walk right into the great cathedral with her beauty.

At least, that’s what Alec thought – that if Yona simply kept her mouth shut, her looks alone could get her into the farthest reaches.

“…Anyway, did you really come from another world or what? Why are you so late with this information, for an adventurer?”

“I did come from another world, but I’m currently a long-term resident over at the Moon Rabbit Inn, so just spill it already.”

“Well anyway, they discovered a path leading down to the 3rd basement level of the Catacombs. But the scouting party that went down came running back saying there was some demon, and the last one got taken out just yesterday.”

“Ah I see…”

Yona finally understood the whole story. The explored area of the Catacombs only went down to the 2nd basement level. If they discovered a path leading further down to the 3rd level, then the parties must have tried to go clear that out before meeting their demise.

“Hmm…”

But if that was the case, there should still be plenty of parties trying to go after the newly discovered area right now. Yet there were too many just idling around the guild at this hour.

Yona craned her neck to look around. At every table, adventurers had claimed their spots, including quite a few veteran-level ones Yona knew well from her years here.

“But why is everyone just hanging around here then?”

Rather than answering directly, Alec drained the rest of his ale. Yona watched enviously as his Adam’s apple bobbed with each swallow.

Ah…maybe I’ll have just one mug too.

As Yona was increasingly tempted, Alec spoke up.

“That’s because they said there’s a demon. A demon appeared down there.”

“A demon…?”

If a demon had appeared, that changed things. A healer was simply a healer, while dealing with a demon required a priest’s services.

“So is everyone just waiting around because there aren’t any priests available?”

“Yeah, pretty much. We gotta wait for the lord to send out a subjugation force, then maybe we can get in on that with their priests and all.”

“The reward must be pretty good for a subjugation force?”

Now it made sense. For those hoity-toity, self-important priests to actually move their asses, it would take an official subjugation force with a hefty reward.

Those condescending bitches who looked down on healers as lowly offshoots, even though they only dealt with idols and rosaries while healing arts were the healers’ domain. What were they so high and mighty about?

“The reward, yeah…Anyway, everyone’s just killing time waiting for the subjugation force to be assembled.”

“I see.”

If it was an official subjugation force assembled on the lord’s orders, then the compensation would be substantial.

It made more sense to wait for that big payout rather than rush off to grab some measly spoils, only to miss out on joining the force.

“Hmm, maybe I’ll kill some time waiting too then.”

No point being a blind fool chasing scraps.
That’s what Yona thought as she decided to wait it out as well.
