chapter 10
chapter 10 “I’m a villain, but I want to live a long life.”
“Well, they said you burned down a ten-meter radius, killing all the horses and loot that were nearby, but thankfully, no one was hurt.”
I pictured the scene in my head.
I pictured him sitting huddled in the middle of a charred forest.
“So that’s what you showed me in the library,” I thought.
“You’re quite the …… talented man.”
“Yes, and now he’s even more famous for his research and development with the support of my master, he’s probably one of the best in the empire in that field.”
I recalled him complaining about the intensity of his work. And I smirked to myself.
“I bet you’ll never, ever leave.
People who talk about quitting like that are usually the ones who never leave. Real quitters leave quietly and without a word.
Plus, the salary here is pretty high.
If it were me, I would have been grateful and said, ‘Thank you so much for using me.
‘You’re talking out of your ass.’
But…….
“I think we had a good conversation, don’t you?”
It was fun to talk to him. Besides, I learned a lot of new things.
He was a very talented man who made his tears.
“There’s no harm in getting to know him.”
I smiled wryly and sucked on the sorbet, which had melted into sweet juice.
In truth, I had many more encounters with Ansen to come.
‘I need to find out more about whether I’m a mutant or not, and I might have to ask him to make more Tears of God.
Not to kill someone, of course,
“For business!
Tear of the God was a drug that hadn’t been released here yet.
Even if it were, it would be classified as a dangerous drug because of the dosage.
But I already knew how to reduce its concentration and reprocess it. I had read.
“When was the drug’s identity revealed in the original story?”
If I could get it manufactured sooner than that, I’d have a hit on my hands.
Who wouldn’t want a potion that amplified their abilities?
I could hear the sound of money rolling around in my head. I chuckled to myself and jumped to my feet.
The wall clock in the corner of my eye showed six o’clock.
I spoke to Anna in a firm voice.
“Anna, enough with the cleaning.”
Anna’s eyes widened and she straightened up.
“Go, all of a sudden? What’s wrong?”
“Get out of here, quick. It’s six o’clock.”
“What?”
An awkward silence followed. Shaking her head, Anna asked cautiously.
“That…… leaving work, what is it?”
I looked at Anna with my mouth hanging open.
She doesn’t know what quitting is.
How the hell did she work so much?
Come to think of it, she was been with me from the time I wake up until the time I close my eyes.
“Do you even take time off from work?!”
“Oh my god…….”
I took a deep breath and spoke in a stern voice.
“……Anna, at six o’clock, you’re supposed to be doing something called quitting work.”
“So what the hell is that…….”
“I’m telling you to go to your quarters and rest until I come back tomorrow, and in the meantime, whatever you do is your business and none of my business.”
“Oh, Naeh…… Naeh?!”
Anna gasped, dropping the duster she was holding.
I shrugged it off and pointed to the clock.
“Well, it’s already six o’clock, so I think you’re done for the day.”
“Oh, no! What about your dinner and your bath water……!!”
“Never mind, I’ll take care of that, just get out of here.”
People don’t die if they don’t bathe every day. But Anna continued to throw up her hands in frustration.
“Oh, miss, where’s the rest for you, when you’re sleeping is my rest time! Ho, did I offend you or something…….”
But I interrupted Anna sharply, saying.
“Anna. Every workplace…… no, every employee has to have time off, and as far as I’m concerned, the right amount of time to work is eight hours a day.”
I shook my head, remembering my former life as a working machine.
“If you work like you do, you’ll hurt yourself later. So stop by the library on your way out, and tell Ansen to get some rest.”
“Nae-eh?! No, you’ve been talking like a…….”
I stormed over to Anna and, without hesitation, began pushing her back toward the door.
“Come on, come on. Can we get out of here?”
“Oh, my God, Miss, why are you doing this!”
Anna threw up her hands in disbelief. But I didn’t stop and pushed her out the door.
“Come back tomorrow around eleven, because I’m going to sleep late, okay?”
Then I said, “Get some rest, then.” I quickly walked out the door and locked it.
“Miss-!!”
Outside, Anna pounded on the door, calling for me anxiously.
But I hummed a tune and walked over to the bed without hesitation and flopped down on it.
“See you tomorrow, Anna!”
I shouted cheerfully, and I heard a small sigh outside, and then the sound of hesitant footsteps faded into the distance.
I rolled over on my bed and stretched, feeling relieved.
Poor Anna, she didn’t even know what quitting was.
If they still needed help after she left, they could simply assign alternating night shift workers who were off during the day.
“From now on, I’m going to have to knife her every day.”
It was not like I haven’t experienced the hard life of a slave.
I wanted to be an employer here, to be a human being.
In my previous life, I couldn’t afford to give back even if I wanted to…….
Here, I can do a lot of things.
‘You’re the daughter of a chaebol who gets a lot of money and food just by being still!’
I pushed myself up with a proud expression and walked to the window.
I pulled back the curtains and opened the window to reveal a panoramic view of the mansion’s garden, which was lushly planted with trees and flowering vines.
The colorful leaves swayed gently in the breeze, and the sky was spectacular with the setting sun.
I closed my eyes with a happy face and muttered languidly.
“It feels good.”
It was such a peaceful evening.
Another day here was coming to an end.
Lunch the next day.
I chewed on a piece of chicken, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, and said, “So, Ansen.
“……So, I’m hoping you’ll give Ansen some time off.”
“Vacation?”
The Duke asked in a low voice. I replied.
“Yes, a vacation.”
The Duke slowly put down his fork.
“I thought you were already well compensated.”
I gulped down my apple juice in nervousness and looked up cautiously.
“That…… father of yours has never walked in your shoes, so he doesn’t know, but there’s more to a job than rewards, like……..”
He raised one eyebrow as if to say what? I mumbled in a crawling voice.
“Phew, do you get enough breaks or something…….”
But my words were interrupted by his sigh.
“Why should I care about his breaks.”
“…….”
At a loss for words, I stared at the duke in front of me, who looked like he had no idea what the problem was.
“Um, where do I even begin to explain this……?
Then a number popped into my head. In times like these, reverse logic is the best.
“So, you’re the one who has to work all those hours without a break…….”
I started to speak, then shut my mouth.
I thought I’d be a better example since a duke doesn’t work for anyone else, even when he’s dead.
“……No, think of it as me.”
I explained enthusiastically.
“Don’t think of it as anyone else’s business, and don’t you feel a little sorry for me if you think I’m overworked like that when I’m family……?”
That’s when Walter, who was standing behind the Duke, let out a “phew-” of laughter. Then, surprising himself, he quickly covered his mouth.
I glanced at him and continued.
“What if I told you that I work in poor conditions, with no sleep and no food?”
“…….”
“What if you’re stuck in an alcove, alone, with no time to spend with your family?”
“…….”
A long silence descended on the dining room.
The Duke, looking uncomfortable, finally spoke like a machine.
“Ansen.”
My eyes widened in anticipation.
“He’s an orphan.”
“……?”
“No family waiting for him at home.”
I blinked in disbelief.
How in the world does a point of the story go that way?
And should I even be hearing this from someone other than myself?
“This is worse than a wall.
My mouth dropped open stupidly for a moment, and then I snapped back to reality. I couldn’t give up Ansen’s vacation like this.
I wanted to be as close to Ansen as possible, and I needed a way to earn his trust.
“For now, the best I can do is get him a vacation.
I swallowed hard and looked the duke in the eye with great determination.
The red pupils were as nonchalant and murderous as ever.
I gathered my courage again.
“Uh, well, I don’t have any family to visit, but I think I need some personal time……?”
“…….”
“I can’t expect to work efficiently without enough rest, and also…….”
But my voice was creeping in. The Duke’s expression was one of unresponsiveness.
“This is a man whose self-consciousness is too powerful to support the station.
I’ve seen many people like this in my past life. The so-called impenetrable shield…….
Besides, he and Selenea had never been on good terms, so there was no way he would give in to her demands.
After thinking about it, I decided to give up. Still, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed.
As I was frowning and cracking my fork, the Duke sighed and said in a low voice.
“……Good.”
I stared at him wide-eyed. The Duke had put down his knife and was now staring at me.
His lips slowly opened.
“One day will be enough.”
A day? That’s a lot to ask, but…….
Somehow I wanted to be a little more greedy, so I opened my mouth very carefully.
“Sah, that seems a little short, how about a week?”
“Two days.”
“How about four days……?”
“……two days. Not more than that.”
He closed his mouth as if he wasn’t going to talk anymore. I nodded quickly, afraid the Duke might change his mind.
“Yes, I understand, thank you!”
That wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
I looked at the Duke, smiling with pride, and he shook his head, avoiding my gaze.
