Chapter 12: Test, Test…Is this on?
She was being glared at.
The red-haired girl was still glaring at her every time she could.
Was she too a [Shadow Pact] fan then?
She wouldn't mind sharing the spot of a concubine with her (No one would dare call herself a wife to [Shadow Pact] after all). But maybe she was one of those that wanted to keep him for herself?
In that case, nothing could be done.
But leaving that side, she might be dangerous since both her and the boy's status were above her. But their skills weren't that amazing.
Leaving aside the [Unique Skills] of Akira (That didn't work anymore) nothing was particularly special about them.
The sword of my heart: |
This skill shapes the will and conviction of the user into a sword and manifested it in the physical world. This sword is as strong as the strength of will and as sharp as the conviction in the heart of the user. While it's made of energy the sword will have a similar texture to a material equivalent to the power of the user. The shape and form of it can be changed depending on the problem that is in front of the user. And the desire that was shaped in the heart. From the purest and brightest sword to the most devilish and corrupted sword. And everything in between. The blade is not only a physical weapon and can affect the magical energies in the world, allowing it to interact with magic. However, using this skill requires immense mental and emotional fortitude. The user must be completely focused and in control of their emotions to effectively wield the blade. If the user's willpower falters, the blade may weaken or even dissipate altogether. Additionally, the user may experience mental and emotional exhaustion after prolonged use of the skill. [The Sword is also a physical manifestation of the belief of the user, as such. Breaking it can cause immense damage to the soul of the user, making it impossible to summon again till the soul has regenerated enough] |
Granted, this skill sounds dangerous. And since she isn't that much more stronger than me I can see most of the details, unlike with [Shadow Pact].
But!
At the end of the day, it's fueled by something as unstable as emotions. Piss her off enough and she will tire herself faster. Mother loved this kind of enemy since they were easier to deal with.
Same with the kid.
I'm Justice: |
This skill taps into the user's deep conviction that they are fighting for a just cause, imbuing them with a surge of power and confidence. As the user's determination to fight for what they think is right grows stronger, so too does their physical and mental abilities. Allowing him to strike with greater speed, strength, and accuracy. As well as resist the effects of negative status effects such as fear, confusion, and doubt. The user's attacks are infused with a holy (looking) energy that can overcome defensive skills and deal damage to those that the user deems demonic enemies. So long as the user's conviction of being Justice isn't shaken, the skill will provide. |
Mostly of the same.
Mother liked to call this type the self-righteous dumbass.
They believed to be in the right and everyone that wasn't on their side are evil.
A good example of idiots with powers. Still more powerful than her, somewhat weaker than his red-haired friend. But with that type of skill, he should be able to hit a tier higher at the very least.
Not that they were tiered (Yet)
She would end up on the lower end. While her skills allowed her to collect info, and direct her growth...They didn't do anything flashy.
She would end up like her father. At least until she broke the thresholds and earned more power, or awakened some extra skills.
She couldn't see her skills evolving...What would [Status] Evolve into anyway?
What would evolving [Identify] do?
Gather more information?
But that depended more on the Information Allocation than anything. And [Inventory]...Well...
She hadn't used that one yet, she had an idea of what it did, since it seemed that it was a staple of summoned heroes.
It was basically a pouch at this point, a big pouch. But a pouch nonetheless. It could hold as much as a hiker's backpack.
And that was the only one that she had an idea of a possible [Evolution] or [Subset Skill].
Either for bigger storage or for liquid / Gas storage.
But that didn't matter today!
Because today was a special day!
"Today we will test your skills and physical prowess to assign a Tier to you. Through your studies at this academy, your tier will oscillate. And your tests will be free. When you graduate you will need to pay for the testing on the Hero Association and give proof of growth to be tested again. So don't waste this gift" called the crazy old man.
Yep, tier testing time!
She...Wasn't looking toward that, but at the same time she was looking forward to it, it was a weird feeling.
On one hand a High Tier meant less work and more pay. That equals extra free time...But that also means that her work would be hard.
Since a higher tier means more difficult work. On the other hand...
Lower tier means easier jobs, but more work to earn money since easier jobs mean less remuneration.
Not that it mattered for her in the end, with the body armor her father had prepared she might jump in tiers anyway.
"When your name is called, come in and either use your skills on the dummy or punch it if your skill is self-strength. Any non-combat skill user may be tested personally by a Tinker powered at a later date" the crazy old man said while pointing to a dummy on the far end.
So they placed it that far to test ranged skills and speedsters too?
"Tier F!" oh they started already?
"LET ME GO AGAIN TEACH!" and we have already someone complaining?
"You will be tested again in six months, for now, let the next one go," said on an annoyed tone the crazy old man.
Like that, a few ones went and came back. Nothing of note since most were on the E-F tiers as she expected by their stats.
Most were still average and weren't used to their skills, even the [Strenghtman]-type wasn't used to their new strength.
So they at best had like 10 to 20 on strength, the equivalent of 2 to 4 men.
Or it was like that till their turn came.
"Suzuki Akira, going in!" called in the black-haired kid while screaming at the top of his lungs and jumping from his place after he was called in.
Was he hyping himself up?
The teacher didn't even bother to disguise his annoyed face, but let him do his thing.
Probably thinking that his skill had that type of requirement, it wouldn't be the first one after all.
Still, the kid made a running charge and hit the dummy on his center of mass.
And so it went flying...And flying...Till it hit a wall and caved in.
"Hmm...Lower D-Tier, next!" was all that the crazy old man said before a new dummy got in place and the wall just repaired itself.
For his part, the kid just mumbled something to himself and returned to his spot, where the red-haired was talking and saying something to him.
But she wasn't paying attention anymore.
So that's was 30 Strength could do huh...
It didn't have that weird glow the skill said so, he probably only used his strength...Maybe if he used it he would rise to C tier?
She somehow doubted it. Father always said that physical strength only carries you so far...Not that it weighted since he was mostly a Bruiser hero Type.
"Watanabe Rena...Going in..." She was red, beet red, as in blushing so hard that most of her blood was in her face red.
She was embarrassed about following the example of her friend...But she still did it nonetheless.
So brave...
The crazy old man didn't even pretend to not be amused by the poor girl too!
And so she went in, walked about 10 meters away from the dummy and just drew her katana from tin air and slashed the dummy.
She slashed its arms and legs and walked away. Creepy.
"...High D-Tier." and just like that everyone started murmuring about how there were two high-class powereds in class.
Some of the girls tried to speak with Akira and Rena but they got ignored by the kid.
That kid and girl were just looking in the direction of a certain blonde...
Who?
Well...The most gorgeous blonde in the school "Elizabeth Starbright, you are the last. Go." Is the one that just got called for her exam!
Now what to do...
Technically my skill was closer to the Tinker class, not that it allowed me to create stuff. But it was the closer category besides self-buffing.
For now "Okay ♪" she would test, not that she had doubts about the result.
"Here goes nothing" and with a sigh, she walked to the dummy and placed a punch on his face.
It trembled a little and...That was it.
No special result, no sudden extra awakening or trigger. Just a normal punch.
"...What?" said the crazy old man, like he couldn't believe what he just saw. The red-haired girl smirked as if she knew the result already.
And the black-haired kid just acted as if nothing was weird.
"...[Did you pull your punch]? " asked the crazy old man an edge in his voice.
"Of course not. Papa would pester me if I tried to downplay my [Strenght]" and so I answered with a shrug. "The result?"
"...Lower F-Tier" he answered as if the words hurt him. And then almost as if struck by thunder added. "You all can take the alternative testing if there are aspects of your skills that can't be translated to Physical Prowess. That might increase your evaluation." Hah!
If she remembered right, that should only come in place after the first year when one's skill was fully integrated into their fighting style. Father always complained about how some powered raised their tier with that.
"And now that we have everyone with a Tier to your names. Your student cards will self-update with the Tier and the most basic description for your powers." And like that, her student card had an 'Under review' in her power slot.
It had 'Provisional' on the tier. So they weren't willing to stick her with F-Tier?
Cowards the lot of them.
"Why does this have provisional on my Tier?" asked the black-haired kid.
"It states that till you provide us with proof of the type of skill you have. Since you didn't use a [Skill] in the test and didn't provide the information about your skills. We will reserve the right to demote your tier if we find evidence of a buff skill was used on you by someone else." answered the old man.
So he wasn't dumb even if he was crazy?
He probably already knew the answer to the question about if he was under a buff or not...And who granted it. After all...

Boot Camp: |
Gives control of the training and allows the user to know if foul play is in effect.
[Most of the information is locked since the user is under its effects]
|
And he already knew there wasn't foul play...
But since he still asked me about if I was pulling punches...Maybe the skill isn't that good at it?
It was probably some detail in the description or the way he used it. Not that it mattered to me though.
Since I was happy as possible with this result for now. I would probably be raised to High F or Lower E depending on who evaluated the [Inventory]...
Or should I stick with the self-strengthening part?
Maybe try and gain a [Subset Skill] or something?
My skills were all over the place to know how to evolve...
"The next class will be about getting a feel of the [Skill] you have and how to try and develop or evolve. Not that we expect any of you to manage that. Those of you that didn't participate or want to be evaluated by a non-fight powered. Leave your name on the list by the door" and with that, the class was dismissed.
A new document was sent to her tablet, and since every tablet in the class gave the same notification it was probably the same for everyone.
"That document you got describes some ways to try and interact with your soulscape, it's mostly techniques of magic users. But they work well enough with us. So try and have a feel of it. Dismiss!" and so it came to an end.
She mingled with a few of the students that didn't take the test, mostly to see what kind of powers they had triggered. They all asked her why she took the test if her power wasn't fight-related.
And so she started weaving her story "I think Papa probably knows the teacher. And so the teacher wanted to test me and see if my power was like Papa's. So trying to not punch that was pointless from the start." Yes.
She was playing the pitiful daughter of a powerful and tyrannical powered!
But so what!
Getting pity early on was a good strategy for later on if she needed extra help to get some homework. And Father was indeed a powerful powered anyway.
He wasn't much tyrannical at home...Since Mother lived there. But she had heard some gossip from his old friends about how he was on the training. And most of his fights ended with way too much collateral damage. So he wasn't a saint anyway!
So it was a guilt-free excuse!
For now anyway. She would mingle a little and then think about delving into her soulscape.
She only wondered what kind of stuff she would find since it was there that her magic and trigger skills resided...
She could only hope that it wouldn't be too messy...
But then again, it was supposed to be a reflection of her soul...
