Chapter 51 – Duel Class 02.
[Chapter Size: 2000 Words.]
Third Person POV
Hogwarts.
...
...
Everyone remained silent as they watched Potter stand up and glare at Snape with fury. Even Professor Longbottom exchanged a brief glance with Professor Flitwick, who nodded, understanding what was happening.
"You will pay for this, Snape!" he said and cast a spell, "Incendio." Sending a burst of fire, Snape simply waved his wand with a Protego, which was stronger than Potter's offensive spell due to his incredible magical prowess.
The flames exploded, covering Snape, while the audience gasped. But Snape emerged from the chaos entirely unharmed, staring calmly at his opponent.
Potter cast another fire spell, which again exploded against Snape's shield. Clenching his teeth, Potter kept a frustrated gaze and launched another attack. "Diffindo." The slashing spell flew again, with Snape easily defending against it.
People just watched as Potter attacked once more, exploding against another part of Snape's shield. Snape remained on the defensive, enjoying it, as it was quite satisfying to see Potter frustrated with each of his spells being easily stopped by his shield.
"Come on, Potter... Is that all you can do?" Snape taunted.
"Shut up, Expelliarmus! Soon your shield will break!!" he shouted and began casting more spells.
For the next few minutes, they watched Potter hurl every spell in his arsenal, with Snape only using his Protego, without any sign of it weakening.
"Snape's shield is certainly very powerful..." Flitwick commented to the D.A.D.A. professor beside him. He held a certain look of admiration for Snape's demonstration.
"Indeed, among everyone here... Snape is the most powerful student. His magical capacity is astonishing... I don't understand how someone his age can be this strong..." Professor Longbottom remarked. Although she didn't have love for Slytherin, as most of the Death Eaters she fought came from that house, she still harbored no prejudice against the boy. On the contrary, she could see a powerful wizard in him and hoped he wouldn't follow the path of the Death Eaters.
Potter was casting spells until he began to feel the strain of using so many, looking at Snape with more frustration, his breath irregular and sweat trickling down his forehead.
"James seems to be in trouble... It's like Snape is toying with him..." said a Gryffindor girl next to Lily, who looked at Snape standing calmly on the other side.
"Finish him, Snape!!" someone from Slytherin shouted. Most still didn't like the new Snape, putting pure-bloods in humiliating conditions, but Snape had started to gain many admirers due to his strength and power.
"Potter, take him down!" Black shouted in response, hoping Potter would put Snape in his place after recent events.
The Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff students watched the fight without many comments, despite their antipathy towards Slytherin.
"You're just a coward, Snape. Attack too!" Potter shouted, hoping to provoke Snape into attacking in anger.
"Alright... if you want that... then let's see if you can handle this." Snape said calmly and in the next moment, cast his fire spell, with Potter quickly creating his shield. But as soon as the Incendio touched his Protego, the power shield simply exploded, and before he could react, Snape had already cast a second spell. Knowing he had generated enough power to destroy his shield, Potter was hit again, flying backward like a puppet. But just as he was about to fall, Snape caught him with Levicorpus. Potter simply floated in the air as Snape brought him back to the platform.
"Come on, Potter, you're so bad it feels like I'm fighting a novice. I thought you wanted to pose a challenge, but it seems I'm dealing with a first-year child." Snape couldn't help but mock.
Some students laughed at this, while others, especially the Gryffindors, scowled. Snape hadn't even made Potter fall off the platform to lose the duel; it was practically a humiliation taking place, with the Marauders nearly drawing their own wands to attack Snape.
Meanwhile, the professors were paying close attention to everything, not allowing anyone to interfere in the duel, which by the rules, was not yet over. 'First-year child? You fight like an adult...' Professor Longbottom kept some thoughts to herself, hearing that from Snape.
"Snape!!" Potter struggled to get up after falling from Snape's levitation spell, reaching for his wand that had fallen in front of him.
"I've realized that fighting you with spells is quite unfair, so I won't be using magic anymore," Snape announced with a serious look.
While the professors raised their eyebrows at this declaration, the students looked at him skeptically. Potter, frustrated by the constant humiliation from the person he disliked the most at the moment, finished standing up with his wand and simply attacked in the next moment.
Snape made his wand disappear into his inventory while moving his body to the side, making the spell pass by him.
"Did he really do that?!" a Ravenclaw student exclaimed in astonishment.
"Look! He did it again!" a Hufflepuff student shouted as Potter began to cast spells repeatedly, despite being quite exhausted, while Snape dodged the second and third spells.
The people around Snape seemed hypnotized, watching him simply dodge the attacks. Seeing that it was becoming too repetitive while moving his body from side to side, Snape began to advance.
James, seeing Snape approaching as his spells passed by him, decided to resort to another tactic and cast an incendiary spell at Snape's feet to explode beneath him.
But Snape, seeing this, simply jumped over four meters in the air as the spell exploded on the platform. Before Potter could react, Snape landed in front of him. Potter's first reaction was to cast a point-blank spell, but Snape was quicker, grabbing his wand with one hand.
"You lose here, Potter," Snape said calmly as James tried to escape his grasp, but in the next moment, a punch hit him in the face, causing him to stagger backward while Snape kept hold of his wand.
Everyone saw James crying out in pain, still stunned by what had just happened. "So, Potter... will you stay down?" Snape taunted.
"Snape!!" James shouted with all his strength, his nose starting to bleed as he looked at Snape with his usual fierce gaze.
"Snape!!!" he screamed again, launching himself forward as he got up, becoming irrational with the amount of anger he felt at that moment. But before he could throw himself at Snape, Potter received another punch directly to his cheek, making him fall again.
Snape stood there, looking at Potter on the ground, waiting for him to get up again.
"Snape!!! You better stop hitting Snape because I swear I will make you pay for this!" Black exclaimed from the crowd.
"You don't even know how to handle those you provoke, and you already want to attack as a group, bunch of losers," Snape mocked, looking at them.
Black heard this, becoming so angry that he even drew his wand from its holster. "Sirius Black, if you attack a duelist on the platform, you will face severe consequences..." Professor Longbottom said in a fierce tone.
"But this isn't a duel, he's acting like a coward!" Black countered, while Lupin stopped him by placing a hand on his shoulder, shaking his head to tell him not to act like that.
"There is nothing outside the rules here, he's not even using magic, and punches don't kill anyone," the professor said.
"I won't lose to a failure like you!" James got up again, angry.
"Just surrender, you're too weak," Snape said, and each word from Snape made James even angrier before charging at the other side, before being punched in the face once more.
"Someone make them stop!" the students shouted, seeing Snape beating James for the next few minutes, while his face bled with one of his eyes swollen, but James refused to give up.
Both professors looked at each other at that moment, already understanding that they should stop the fight. And in the next moment, as James got up once more with his face bruised, the professors raised their wands and cast a stunning spell, sending it flying towards the two.
James was hit and fell to the ground, paralyzed in the next moment, while Snape was quick, still holding James's wand in his hand, parrying the attack and counterattacking reflexively towards the person who attacked him. Professor Longbottom was a bit surprised by this and defended herself from Snape's attack.
In the next moment, the place fell into complete silence, with the professor looking at Snape, who was pointing James's wand at her. "Nice reflexes. But it's over now, Snape." She broke the silence while everyone watched, mesmerized. Snape sighed and looked at James on the ground before tossing the wand near him and beginning to leave the platform.
"I'm done here. I'm leaving," Snape commented calmly. Only a few students were still speaking, so he didn't need to stay any longer and went off to do his own things.
Flitwick sighed and looked at the professor, who just nodded, allowing Snape to go without stopping him, while they picked up James and placed him on a stretcher.
"He should go to Penelope in the infirmary..." she said.
"Well, let's continue the class..." Flitwick requested, to finish with the remaining students.
Meanwhile, an explosion of murmurs came from all the students, commenting on what had happened. Lucinda and Clarisse remained paralyzed on their stretchers.
"He must pay for what he did to James!" Sirius exclaimed to his group.
"Did you see how he fought against James... can we face him?!" Pettigrew said with some fear in his voice.
"..." Lupin remained silent. He was torn because it was clear they couldn't fight Snape, who was much stronger on one hand, but they were also angry about what he did to James on the other.
"Will Snape become a Death Eater?" a Slytherin student asked, with even greater admiration for Snape.
"..." Lily looked at all of this without knowing what to think, while her housemates were angry and the girls in her house were gossiping.
The class continued with the remaining students as they kept dueling, but without any grand spectacle like before, while all the students faced each other.
"Well, we're done here. I hope you have learned a few things. Every Thursday we will have duels between all fifth-year houses, so I hope you fix what you learned here today and improve for the next challenges," Longbottom said.
"Yes, I hope you become extremely skilled. I myself won dueling championships in my school days and hope to take Hogwarts to compete in tournaments with other wizarding schools around the world, so work hard," Professor Flitwick commented, receiving many surprised looks at this declaration.
As the students began to leave, he turned back to the professor. "There's no one who can face Snape here... What will we do?" he asked.
"He was quick to cast that spell on me and even defended himself... What do you think about putting him in combat with the seventh years?" she asked.
"It would be more balanced for someone like Snape. Did you see how he dodged the spells using his body or that final leap?" Flitwick, who already had hopes that Snape would become one of the greatest wizards of this generation, spoke with admiration for the boy's performance.
"I've never seen anything like it. Wizards don't fight this way, but a victory is a victory," Professor Longbottom said and sighed. "Now I'll take these kids to the infirmary. That boy even makes two women fight over him... I hope he doesn't cause too many problems," she said, beginning to leave, with Flitwick just nodding in agreement, listening to her.
