Chapter 6: Volume 1, Chapter 6: Training at the Limits
"I didn't expect you to already possess the strength of an A-rank Valkyrie now."
During Xia Chen's break, a blue-haired girl dressed in training attire approached him.
Alvitr handed him a bottle of water, saying, "It's saline solution; it'll suffice for hydration. You need this right now."
"Thanks."
He quickly drank half of the saltwater in one gulp.
The Immortal Blades' training facilities were well-equipped, which contributed to their superior strength compared to other squads. Consequently, both combat personnel and logistics technicians had rigorous training requirements within the Immortal Blades.
Thus, Alvitr's presence here was unsurprising.
"Don't you get time off?" After taking a sip, Xia Chen asked the girl beside him, "With no active missions currently, shouldn't the Technology Department be relatively idle? Aren't you on vacation?"
"You clearly misunderstand how the Technology Department works," Alvitr rolled her eyes. "We've never really had downtime."
Alvitr rolled her eyes, "Aside from other tasks, every time you return from missions, we need to review the combat data recorded by your armor. Then, we assess if there are any areas for improvement."
She couldn't help but grumble, "Our department head insists that each member must suggest at least two improvements. It's driving me crazy."
"The Technology Department has performance targets too?"
"Yep, sometimes I wish I had joined the Combat Division instead."
Alvitr sighed, "Lately, I've been finding more hair on my pillow when waking up."
For various well-known reasons, within the Immortal Blades, there was little distinction between the Combat and Logistics Divisions.
As a member of the third squad's Technology Department, Alvitr didn't have direct combat duties, yet she faced daily demands for information analysis.
Her visit to the training area was primarily to unwind; originally, she had come looking for Susannah.
However, Otto summoned Susannah to headquarters, and coincidentally spotting Xia Chen exercising, Alvitr decided to stay behind.
"But...I think I've found something worth investigating. Come here."
"What?"
"Come with me, don't worry; it's just a blood draw to collect some cells."
Xia Chen's rapid power growth was concerning. Considering he had been with the Immortal Blades for only three months and initially possessed talent comparable to an average A-rank Valkyrie, his current abilities already surpassed those required for an A-rank Valkyrie assessment.
This swift progression indicated that something significant must have occurred within his body.
However, Alvitr's request made him hesitate.
He feared revealing the presence of Stigmata on his body, as in this world of Honkai, Stigmata were exclusive to young girls.
"What's wrong?" Alvitr noticed Xia Chen's hesitation, puzzled by his reaction.
"It's nothing; I doubt there have been any major changes physically." After a moment's thought, he decided to keep the Stigmata secret. "Captain Durandal had me undergo two days of specialized training recently. She taught me new combat techniques and methods to enhance my physical strength, that's all."
Durandal served as a convenient excuse for almost anything.
After all, no one could comprehend how such immense strength was contained within her body—it seemed almost beyond human capability.
As expected, Alvitr responded, "Ah, it must be Captain Durandal's training then. That explains it."
Suddenly, a Valkyrie approached Xia Chen and straightforwardly asked, "Could you tell me...how did Captain Durandal instruct you? I'm curious to know."
"Uh, you are..."
"Grisa, a member of the Immortal Blades."
"And us too."
Unbeknownst to him, nearly all the Valkyries had gathered around.
Gathering his courage, Xia Chen replied, "Actually, she taught me the Kaslana Gunmanship technique deconstructed by the Science Division. If you don't mind, we can go through a set of exercises together; it's the same training Lady Durandal gave me individually before."
Even now, he still felt apprehensive recalling those intense sessions with Durandal.
She wasn't exactly a nurturing teacher, preferring not to ease into training gradually. Instead, every exercise aimed to push his physical limits relentlessly.
However, he harbored no resentment towards Durandal.
He knew he was simply too weak.
Especially during their second simulation, facing the instant appearance of the Spear of Antiquity left them utterly defenseless.
When the Valkyries from the Immortal Blades began training alongside Xia Chen, they couldn't help but grit their teeth.
Alvitr deeply regretted her decision.
She wondered why, as a member of the Technology Division, she had agreed to participate and why she thought joining the Combat Division would be easier.
The Immortal Blades required non-combat personnel to undergo training, but its intensity was manageable even for ordinary individuals, not overly demanding.
However, Xia Chen's exercises started with ankle weights weighing thirty kilograms each, followed by evading massive solid balls rolling relentlessly.
Although these balls weren't fast, the potential injuries upon impact were severe.
After an hour of evasion training, it transitioned to abdominal strength workouts. These resembled typical gym routines, albeit with maximum weight resistance.
At this point, Alvitr and some Valkyries could no longer continue.
Yet, the session wasn't over.
Alvitr witnessed Xia Chen strap on two sandbags, then begin climbing.
Next came a twenty-kilometer sprint without any additional weight.
After completing the entire training regimen, only a few Valkyries managed to endure until the end. Alvitr hurriedly brought over a stack of saline solutions, as any electrolyte imbalance at this point could be problematic.
Once they had somewhat recovered, Alvitr looked at Xia Chen with mixed emotions and said, "I'll never again claim that the Combat Division has it easier than the Technology Department."
"Ha." Still panting heavily, Xia Chen took several moments to catch his breath.
"Captain Durandal mentioned this is just the foundation," he paused briefly before continuing, "However, such prolonged intense training can accelerate the wear on one's life span, which she doesn't advocate for. Once the fourth-generation Valkyrie armor becomes widely available, these high-intensity physical exercises should become obsolete."
After all, human physical strength has its limits, and to combat Honkai, reliance on advanced armor is crucial.
However, after experiencing the simulation, Xia Chen realized the importance of physical training.
At least, sustaining high-intensity combat for extended periods was crucial.
Despite this, someone couldn't resist commenting, "Even if fourth-generation Valkyrie armor becomes widespread, it still might not match our captain without any armor."
The group exchanged glances, feeling quite disheartened.
Indeed, perhaps the Immortal Blades should stick to logistics instead.
Xia Chen didn't say anything in response.
Unlike others, he had an advantage—the System.
After a brief conversation with Alvitr, he returned to his room.
With one more simulation opportunity left for the week, he planned to use it.
Only by confronting Honkai head-on could he become stronger.
