High School DxD: Lustful Ascension

Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Targets

Kuoh Academy was one of Japan's top high schools, rumored to have been founded by a demon king. Any humanoid supernatural being in Japan could enter, provided they passed the test.

Ordinary people needed excellent grades and a solid financial background to get in. While Qingqiu's adoptive parents were wealthy, they only paid for his tuition at this private high school. It wasn't that they didn't want the Takamine sisters to attend, but Kuoh Academy's fees were exorbitant.

The tuition was justified, given the high teaching standards, excellent environment, and responsible faculty. More importantly, entering Kuoh Academy offered ordinary people a chance to transform. There was a story about a regular male student who saved a dying black cat out of kindness. He ended up marrying a catgirl and became a powerful mage.

Admiring the luxurious building, Qingqiu marveled at Kuoh Academy's wealth. The Occult Research Club emphasized discretion, and while its building was large, it lacked the visual impact of the sports clubs, which had the largest budgets.

Some schools had separate kendo, basketball, and other clubs for boys and girls, but not Kuoh Academy. While the changing rooms were separate, training was coed. Each sports club had a large activity room, akin to a small indoor gymnasium, allowing for gender-segregated activities and avoiding the need for separate male and female clubs, which conveniently suited Qingqiu's plan.

Recalling the layout, Qingqiu headed to the Kendo Club. As soon as he entered, someone approached him.

"Are you here to see someone?"

"No, I've taken an interest in kendo recently and want to try joining the club," Qingqiu replied, scanning the room with some disappointment. Most members were covered head to toe in gear during training, making it hard to see faces or figures. He could only determine gender from the occasional kiai.

Only a few newer members in a corner practiced without helmets. Using his Insightful Eye, Qingqiu found no promising targets. After a couple of laps around the dojo, he made an excuse and left.

He continued to the archery, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, taekwondo, and karate clubs, using the same excuse of newfound interest. Regardless of the reception, he said he'd consider joining and respond in a few days.

Qingqiu had criteria for choosing clubs, primarily combat potential, followed by a decent number of female members, preferably outstanding ones. Strong women were more likely to have talents that enhanced combat abilities. While not guaranteed, the odds were better than randomly searching.

After his rounds, Qingqiu felt rewarded despite not having a full harvest. He spotted several familiar pretty girls, including Kendo Club's Miyajima Sakura, Archery Club's Sakuramiya Saya and Hinata, Track and Field Club's Suzumori Mizuki, Baseball Club's Nanao Akane, and Karate Club's Shizunomiya Natsuba.

Beyond these anime protagonist-level characters, the real surprises were Swimming Club's Uzaki Hana and Tennis Club's Echizen Nanako. Unlike the many characters from the hidden world, legitimate anime characters were rare. In this world, they were akin to SSR cards in a gacha game—rare regardless of their power.

Despite finding a few bright spots, Qingqiu's view of the world remained unchanged. Even in a Lovecraftian world, people occasionally returned to normal. Similarly, the presence of a few serious characters didn't negate the world's anime roots.

As dusk fell, Qingqiu had scouted most of the sports clubs. He memorized his targets, planning to approach them one by one, including both familiar heroines and standout club members. While they might not be as alluring as the more familiar beauties, their looks and figures were above average.

...

Two kilometers southwest of Kuoh Academy's gates, a group of delinquents loitered in an alley, eyeing passersby.

"Boss, what about that kid? He looks easy to bully."

"Yeah, let's go for him. Kuoh Academy students are all fat sheep," the leader said, tossing his cigarette butt. "Be careful, though. Go test him first."

As frequent troublemakers in the area, they knew some students were tough nuts. Some seemingly weak ones could take on ten, while others had hidden bodyguards, sometimes whole squads. There were also those with powerful family backgrounds, like yakuza heirs or the police chief's daughter.

"Alright, I'll go check him out," the delinquent who suggested it said, rising and slowly approaching Qingqiu, who was deep in thought.

As they brushed past each other, the delinquent suddenly shoulder-checked Qingqiu. Qingqiu barely staggered, easily stabilizing himself, while the delinquent stumbled from the recoil. Qingqiu stopped, giving the colorful-haired delinquent a curious and innocent look. "Excuse me, is something the matter?"

The delinquent was puzzled but continued the act. "Huh? What's the matter?" he growled, holding his chest dramatically. "You bumped into me, didn't you know?"

Qingqiu maintained a naive and innocent expression. "Oh, I bumped into you? I'm really sorry about that."

"Is 'sorry' all you have to say?"

"Well... do you want to bump into me in return?" Qingqiu tilted his head, asking innocently.

The delinquent, face darkening, shouted, "Who the hell wants to bump into you?"

"So, what do you want to do?" Qingqiu asked, subtly taking two steps back to avoid the delinquent's flying spit and to assess the others in the alley.

The delinquent stepped forward and grabbed Qingqiu by the collar. "I'm telling you, this won't end without ten ten thousand yen!"

"Oh, you want money? You should have said so," Qingqiu replied, feigning realization. "But I don't have that much cash on me. I'll need to go to the bank."

Thanks to the protagonist's template, Qingqiu handled such situations with ease. He calculated that the calm period was about over. Sure enough, trouble found him on the day he didn't walk with Hamazaki Reina and the others.

Seeing Qingqiu so compliant, the delinquent paused, thinking he had encountered a bookish pushover. "I don't feel like going to the bank. Give me whatever money you have on you."

"But I don't have any money on me," Qingqiu replied, tilting his head. "Why don't you just bump into me?"

The delinquent: "..."

"Are you messing with me, punk?!"

Qingqiu shook his head regretfully. "You caught on too quickly. I wasn't done playing."
