Man it has been awhile since I've rotated the technique while sleeping using my main consciousness. My dream rate is decreasing! That isn't good at all.
Dream rate: 6.667%
Today is special. Just like how I talked about 'The King in Yellow' in one of the stages. Let us talk about H.P Lovecraft. Or more specifically one of his stories.
The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath
It is about a man named Randolph Carter. This man saw a legendary city in a dream a few times. But when he tried to reach out to the hidden existences that potentially controlled this city. He stopped having these dreams.
He has quite a bit of 'forbidden knowledge'. So he explores the dreamlands to try to find the source of this marvelous city.
'which crowns Ulthar’s highest hill—he sought out the patriarch Atal, who had been up the forbidden peak Hatheg-Kla in the stony desert and had come down again alive.
Atal, seated on an ivory dais in a festooned shrine at the top of the temple, was fully three centuries old; but still very keen of mind and memory. From him Carter learned many things about the gods, but mainly that they are indeed only earth’s gods, ruling feebly our own dreamland and having no power or habitation elsewhere. They might, Atal said, heed a man’s prayer if in good humour; but one must not think of climbing to their onyx stronghold atop Kadath in the cold waste. It was lucky that no man knew where Kadath towers, for the fruits of ascending it would be very grave. Atal’s companion Barzai the Wise had been drawn screaming into the sky for climbing merely the known peak of Hatheg-Kla. With unknown Kadath, if ever found, matters would be much worse; for although earth’s gods may sometimes be surpassed by a wise mortal'
'First he questioned the old priest about that marvelous sunset city seen from the railed terrace, thinking that perhaps he might find it without the gods’ aid; but Atal could tell him nothing. Probably, Atal said, the place belonged to his especial dream-world and not to the general land of vision that many know; and conceivably it might be on another planet. In that case earth’s gods could not guide him if they would. But this was not likely, since the stopping of the dreams shewed pretty clearly that it was something the Great Ones wished to hide from him.'
Why exactly would a hidden existence wish to hide their Paradise from a mortal? A wise mortal surpassing earth's gods sounds ridiculous. But isn't that what we are doing with this technique?
You have limited lifespan.
You have limited processing power.
You are like an ant compared to what is out there.
Yet. You still fight the good fight. You do not allow yourself to be erased by reality. You have done something taboo. Neither praying to the gods or to others. You pray to yourself and mimic them.
The eternal thread. The avatar, the paradise, your global existence. These are the tools you have painstakingly created.
'the slow creeping course of eternity the utmost cycle of the cosmos churned itself into another futile completion, and all things became again as they were unreckoned kalpas before. Matter and light were born anew as space once had known them; and comets, suns, and worlds sprang flaming into life, though nothing survived to tell that they had been and gone, been and gone, always and always, back to no first beginning.'
I really like this quote. I'm mainly mentioning this book in this stage as a reminder for myself to finish reading 'The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath' one day.
This guide itself is like a eternal keepsake.
When I eventually finish all 2,500 stages. I will be able to look back fondly at my progress.
