Chapter 11
Chapter 11 – Po-ahim, What Is This?
“Haah….”
It was Si-hyun’s turn for the night shift in the ward, and he let out a yawning sigh that echoed his drowsiness.
People preparing for civil service exams often talk about it on the internet forums. They say that being a correctional officer on night shift is the absolute best gig.
Do a patrol every hour, and you can even read a book!
Plus, you get swapped out for four hours of sleep.
But reality?
…Well, there really wasn’t much to do.
If an emergency, like a medical crisis, happened, it could get tricky, but those incidents were nearly nonexistent.
Of course, working night shifts definitely ate away at your lifespan, no doubt about it.
Si-hyun did a patrol, reported in on time using TRS, and then slumped into his chair, staring blankly into space.
“Why is nothing happening?”
He muttered to himself, trying to shake off the drowsiness.
For just over a month, he had gone on raids every weekend but hadn’t even caught a glimpse of a human-type monster.
Perhaps because it was E-rank, the raids themselves were easier than he expected, so there was no pressure.
He was even making a nice bit of change from it.
But it was just frustrating that no human-type monsters showed up.
In the meantime, a newly appeared quest related to wisdom, mental power, and magic power caught his eye from the prison side.
Of course, it had been a while since his magic power increase had stalled.
Still, he couldn’t help but hope, “Maybe it’ll go up this time?”
[The prisoners’ sexual desires have been a problem since ancient times. Po-ahim periodically solved this issue by gathering male and female inmates who had their desires built up in one place. Po-ahim wants to see you resolve the sexual desire problem of the inmates.]
[Quest: Satisfy the sexual desires of the inmates. 0/30]
…That was a terrifying topic.
They were saying they periodically gather prisoners to relieve their sexual urges.
What the heck is this, Mr. Po-ahim?
I mean… is there no human rights there?
Of course, he knew it was not a light issue.
When he was a newcomer, a supervisor he worked with had made a remark.
“Younger women shouldn’t be visiting to observe.”
“Is that so?”
“When the kids see a young lady, they go crazy for the whole day.”
“Crazy?”
“They suffer like hell thinking about women. Even going to the bathroom doesn’t help ease it.”
At that time, it sounded vague, but as he worked, he understood what it meant.
Even Saint Francis of Christianity couldn’t endure his sexual desires, writhing in agony with rose thorns; what would it say for the inmates?
“Anyway, I roughly get why this is popping up.”
Si-hyun muttered to himself again.
It seemed to oddly connect with the current state of the prison.
Last week in the cell, it appeared there were two incidents where inmates had hidden psychotropic drugs, causing the Security Department Head to get really angry.
Psychotropic substances were carefully managed because consuming too much could be fatal. They were usually collected by drug offenders and turned into a powder to seek the effects of narcotics.
Even with guards keeping an eager watch, if they cleverly hid them between fingers or spilled them underfoot, there would be instances where they’d slip through the cracks.
Si-hyun had been caught once and had written a report that amazed him with its magic-like skill; it was instantaneous how the pills vanished between fingers.
Anyway, there was no way the notoriously strict Security Department Head would let three incidents slip through, especially not one.
Naturally, the responsible guards submitted reports, and to enforce discipline, they conducted thorough inspections of all inmates in the ward.
Because of that, even the photos of scantily clad women that every inmate had were all disposed of. Photos of women only wearing underwear on the ward walls were also torn down.
Originally, those were items that were let go, but due to the Security Department Head’s orders, there was no choice.
They seemed intent on setting a severe example this time.
Thanks to that, even in Si-hyun’s ward, which was rumored to be orderly, all the lewd photos of women were disposed of in a group.
That was already a week ago.
It was about time for it to ease up, but there had been absolutely no news.
Then, a quest popped up.
Was it too much piled up?
It seemed there was a need for some discreet supply.
Though it clashed with the Security Department Head’s orders, there wasn’t a sense of guilt.
Si-hyun’s ward had an iron grip on order, silencing the inmates, but in other wards, there were whispers of complaints about how excessive it all was.
Yeah, it really was too extreme.
Prisons were places where people live, for real.
◈ ◈ ◈
Before heading home, Si-hyun, tired from the night shift, stopped by a bookstore with droopy eyes.
His hand grabbed a magazine.
It was marked as adult-rated in bright red.
Sealed so he couldn’t see the content, he bought one.
As he walked and tore it open to skim through, it seemed a bit too weak, likely because it was a Korean magazine.
If he was going to unwind, it would be better to do it with some spicy quality photos.
Si-hyun called his friend Sang-kyu.
– What’s up, calling early in the morning?
“On my way to work?”
– No, I just got to the office and am having a quick smoke.
“You got some adult magazines, right?”
– What kind of nonsense is this?
Sang-kyu replied with a puzzled tone.
“I’m serious. I need some; do you have any adult magazines?”
– Ah, sure, I do.
“Get me foreign ones. Japanese ones are fine, and Western ones too.”
– I’ll give you both. Are you lonely at night since you broke up with Su-jin or something?
“It’s nothing like that, so don’t worry. Work well, and I’ll stop by later for dinner. I’ll bring something as a token of appreciation.”
◈ ◈ ◈
‘See, foreign ones are definitely the real deal.’
He slipped the photos he had cut out yesterday into the small bag he always carried while entering the ward.
With the quest requiring 30, he planned to circulate them in the medium and large wards instead of the fire suppression ones.
So he had carefully selected about five high-tier photos to cut out. Of course, while cutting, he also indulged his eyes…
“Hey, Chief, it’s lunch time, you should head out.”
Si-hyun glanced at his watch and said to Supervisor Park Young-hwan.
The assigned officers and assistant duty officers took turns for lunch, with a strict rule that the ward couldn’t be empty.
And that time was the optimal opportunity Si-hyun had in mind.
During that time, there wouldn’t be anyone in the ward who could touch him.
“Oh, is it already that time? Then I’ll go eat, so keep it up.”
Young-hwan said that and trudged out of the ward.
Once he was completely gone, Si-hyun got up from his seat.
Forty-five minutes should be enough, right?
‘Just gotta be mindful of the CCTV.’
Though there were many CCTVs, not all cells were visible from central control. And even if they could see, it was hard to tell exactly what the guards were doing from the windows.
It was a simple task to sprinkle the photos in the medium and large wards in places that wouldn’t be seen. As long as the inmates kept their mouths shut and any evidence photos disappeared, there was no way this would get caught.
And nobody could do this better than Si-hyun.
Large Ward 4.
Medium Ward 1.
This should be enough.
Si-hyun first headed to Room 16.
He tapped lightly on the window near the bars.
“Hey, can we have a chat for a minute?”
“Ugh… W-Why are you doing this?”
The moment their eyes met, the inmate by the window gasped. Not wanting to make eye contact, they stared at something strange beside them.
“Everyone, pay attention.”
“Y-Yes, sir!”
The inmates started to sit up straight like they were about to receive an inspection.
“Don’t be so stiff and nervous. I’m just here to give you something nice.”
“….”
They became even more tense.
Si-hyun scratched his head.
He decided to show instead of just tell.
He pulled out the risqué photos he had cut from his jacket and slid them through the gap in the window.
“Whoa!”
“Ugh!”
The inmates gasped in disbelief, their eyes wide open.
What they had longed for and lost after disposal was right before them.
If Si-hyun hadn’t been a figure of fear, they might have lunged forward to snatch them.
“I’m giving this specially, so use it well. Oh, and when you’re done, just tear it up and… eat it.”
That was the most certain way to dispose of it.
“I-I’ll eat it!”
“I’ll enjoy it!”
Wait, they didn’t really need to enjoy it…
Si-hyun walked toward the next room, his face showing disbelief.
