Chapter 35: Chapter 35: “The Island of Awkward Truths: This is Why We Don’t Talk About It”
The Island of Awkward Truths was shrouded in mist, its jagged cliffs jutting out like teeth ready to bite anyone foolish enough to land there. As the group stepped ashore, they were greeted by a sign:
"Welcome to the Island of Awkward Truths! Prepare to cringe."
"I don't like this already," Mika muttered, crossing her arms.
"Come on," Fergus said, marching forward. "How bad could it be?"
The ground beneath him shimmered, and suddenly, a hologram of Fergus's past appeared in the air.
Flashback 1: Fergus's Musical Misstep
In the projection, Fergus was standing in a crowded tavern, holding a lute.
"Oh no," Fergus groaned.
Past Fergus strummed the lute and began to sing. Loudly. Off-key. The lyrics were a heartfelt—but horribly written—ode to a woman named Beryl, who was sitting at the bar looking mortified.
"Your eyes are like the sea, so salty and blue,
Your laugh is a melody, slightly off-tune too!"
The crowd booed, and someone threw a tomato.
"Why did you even write that song?" Mika asked, struggling not to laugh.
"I panicked!" Fergus said, his face red. "It was supposed to be a compliment!"
Flashback 2: Mika's Prank Gone Wrong
The ground beneath Mika shimmered next, and she froze.
"Nope. I'm out," she said, trying to walk away, but it was too late.
The projection showed Mika as a teenager, sneaking into a noble's garden. She held a sack of frogs, grinning mischievously.
"Oh, this is going to be good," Fergus said, leaning in.
Past Mika released the frogs into a pristine fountain, laughing as chaos erupted. But then, the noble's prize-winning poodle jumped into the fountain, trying to catch the frogs.
The poodle emerged, covered in mud and algae, and barked furiously at Mika, who screamed and ran straight into the fountain herself.
"Was the prank worth it?" Kazuya asked, smirking.
"Absolutely," Mika said, trying to hide her embarrassment.
Flashback 3: Kazuya's Romantic Failure
The ground beneath Kazuya shimmered, and he frowned. "This better not be what I think it is."
The projection showed Kazuya, standing under a cherry blossom tree, holding a bouquet of flowers. He was nervously waiting for someone.
"That's... kind of sweet," Lyria said.
But then the girl he was waiting for appeared—and immediately burst out laughing.
"You brought me weeds?" she asked, pointing at the bouquet.
"They're wildflowers!" Past Kazuya said defensively.
"They're dandelions," she replied, still laughing.
The projection ended with Kazuya throwing the bouquet into the air and storming off.
"Wildflowers are underrated," Kazuya muttered, crossing his arms.
The Island's Challenge
As they walked further into the island, the air became thick with the sound of laughter and cringing groans.
"What's the point of this place?" Mika asked. "To humiliate us?"
Suddenly, a glowing orb appeared, floating in front of them. It spoke in a booming voice:
"To leave the Island of Awkward Truths, you must confess a truth you've never shared before!"
"Confess?" Fergus said, looking nervous.
"Yes," the orb said. "And it must be juicy."
The Confessions
Fergus: "Fine. I once ate an entire cake meant for a royal banquet. I blamed it on a stray cat. The cat got knighted for its 'bravery.'"
Mika: "I once accidentally set fire to my own tent... while trying to light a candle. I blamed it on bandits."
Kazuya: "I secretly enjoy the terrible puns Fergus makes."
"That's not embarrassing," Mika said.
"It is for me," Kazuya replied, blushing.
Lyria: "I've been pretending to know what this quest is about the entire time."
"What?!" the others exclaimed in unison.
Lyria shrugged. "I'm just here for the snacks and the chaos."
The Orb's Reaction
The orb hummed, glowing brighter. "These truths are sufficiently awkward. You may proceed."
The mist cleared, revealing a shimmering path leading to the island's peak.
The Truth Treasure
At the top of the peak, they found a glowing chest. Inside was a single scroll, which read:
"The greatest truth is knowing that no one's perfect."
"That's it?" Mika said, frowning.
"No treasure? No gold?" Fergus added.
"Wisdom is priceless," Kazuya said, pocketing the scroll.
"Still feels like a rip-off," Mika muttered as they began their journey back to the boat.
Reflection and More Laughs
As they sailed away from the island, the group couldn't stop laughing about each other's embarrassing moments.
"I can't believe you blamed a cat for eating a cake," Mika said, shaking her head.
"It was a really convincing cat," Fergus replied.
"Let's just never speak of this again," Kazuya said, staring at the horizon.
But deep down, they all knew that the awkward truths had brought them closer together—whether they liked it or not.
