Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Goodbye Dragon
The rest of the days passed while the girls kept dragging me along to Hagrid's to translate whatever the spoilt dragon was saying which happened to be it wanting shiny things or food. Of course, the little thing knew better than to take anything from Daphne such as the shiny necklace or rings she wore since I had scared it quite a bit the last time it tried.
"This is the last day, Erik please translate for us one more time," Daphne said while flashing her signature puppy dog eyes at me which had lost all their power due to how much of a pain this was. "I need to come along anyway since I am going to help transport the dragon to the astronomy tower," I replied ignoring the cute face she was making in preference for reading the chapter of the new book I had started.
"Why are you reading about Care of Magical Creatures anyway?" Grace asked while leaning on my shoulders. I shrugged her arms off of me before closing my book and saying, "I merely find the subject interesting and since I will get no peace here I shall retire to my room till we head down to Hagrids."
Once in my room, I locked the door before laying on my bed and thinking of the large snake problem the school will have next year should everything go the same as canon. "It most likely will ignore us pureblooded students so we should be fine but what about that buffoon who is going to be a teacher. It was never mentioned in canon but I do not trust him around the girls as he is a master of the memory charm and can make anything he does to them disappear."
While I thought about the blonde peacock that would prance around the school soon my mind wondered whether it would be better to just off him before he came to the school. It didn't take long for my mind to settle on a decision, I would wait for him to attend the feast before doing him in with my power since that would mean the book signing would happen giving Malfoy Senior plenty of opportunities to give the diary to someone.
After my contemplation, the three of us walked towards Hagrid's hut. "I wonder if Hagrid has any more burn marks today?" Grace asked while kicking a loose stone along with us. "It would be entirely his own fault, Erik has told him that the dragon doesn't want to be touched by him so why would he keep trying to hug it?" Daphne replied.
The dragon as it turns out seemed to be even more lively than the other days as it spewed fire towards the door as soon as Hagrid opened it for us to enter, if we were not cautious enough we would have been singed or even badly burnt from the gout of flame it had launched.
"What have you done to rile it up so much Hagrid?" I asked but before the large man could answer the dragon pounced onto the live chicken which had been evading it until now. As a rain of chicken blood and feathers flew everywhere I looked towards Hagrid before saying, "I thought I said to tie its legs together so it couldn't run away from the dragon?"
"I only let it chase it so it could have a bit of fun before we had to say goodbye," Hagrid replied sheepishly. Nodding at the overgrown child which Hagrid had turned into by looking after this dragon, I sat down on the large bench-like seats Hagrid had set out for guests only to notice that the amber slits the dragon called eyes were looking towards me or more specifically the golden chain which attached to my pocket watch.
The dragon had only just noticed it because of the runes I had placed on the exterior of the watch which caused those sensitive to magic to perceive it easier. This was a byproduct however as the runes themselves were for durability, anti-dirty and waterproofing. "You know the rules, if you want something what do you have to do?" I hiss towards the dragon which caused it to walk towards me slowly while sniffing the air as if to detect any sudden shifts of the air.
When the dragon reached 3 feet from me, I stopped before spreading its wings and jumping onto the bench next to me. It took another sniff at the pocketwatch to verify that it was real before gently sitting on my lap like a cat and opening its mouth to receive the watch.
The rest of the evening passed smoothly as the dragon sat on my lap receiving gentle strokes while it bit at the golden watch. It eventually reached the time for us to transport the dragon so Hagrid gave the dragon the last live chicken which had been laced with a sleeping draught.
"Ok, so we need to carry it up to the Astronomy tower without being seen or we will be expelled." Grace summed up while stretching after sitting down for so long. "Yes, It shouldn't be too hard since Hagrid told us the main doors have been left open tonight. So all we really need to watch out for is Filch as the prefects have all turned in for bed by now." Daphne said while placing a bed which Hagrid had made for the dragon into the cage we would transport it in.
We soon set off towards the castle under the cover of night with a caged sleeping dragon. The journey to the castle wasn't bad as no teachers patrolled the outside of the castle since that was Hagrid's job but as soon as we reached the entrance hall we heard several distinct footsteps; Filch's, Snape's and McGonagall's. "Looks like we need to be extra careful, the shortcut from the entrance hall to the 5th floor might be a bit of a squeeze but it will cut a lot of time off our travel," I say while casting a disillusionment charm over the group which would allow us to blend in more.
The shortcut was indeed a squeeze but it allowed us to easily get to the 5th floor only 2 main floors and a tower away from our destination, the bad news is that Filch had reached the 5th floor at the same time as us so we had to take a small detour to avoid bumping into the man. Manoeuvring around the 3 teachers who seemed to pop up wherever we went was tricky and time-consuming which was bad since the dragon had started to stir due to the potion wearing off.
We finally managed to reach the Astronomy tower and settled in to wait for Charlie's team to arrive, we didn't have to wait long however as a group of 4 brooms dove down to the tower after 5 minutes of waiting, "Here to pick up a dragon?" The lead rider said while looking towards the cage, "Yes, she is still asleep but has started to stir so she may wake soon." I say in reply to the guy's question.
The loading process of the cage was quick and easy since they tied a rope around each broom and cage corner and lifted the cage under the 4 of them. "Good luck and safe travels," I said while glad to see the back of my translation duties.
