Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Troll In The Toilets
The Great Hall erupted into chaos over Quirrell's scared fainting act, however, the load magically amplified voice of Dumbledore cut over the screaming. "Quiet!" was the only word he needed to shout as it had an immediate effect on those panicking, "Prefect would you escort your houses back to their common rooms while we professors track down the troll and take care of it."
The steady even tone he used calmed the students and snapped the prefects into action. I turned to Daphne and Grace before saying, "We should probably go find Hermione as she had no idea there was a troll on the loose." The grim look on both of their faces told me that they were worried about her and whether she had encountered the troll already.
I led the girls away from the group of students when we reached the main staircase. I knew where Hermione was but I had also gathered the information from the Slytherin gossip girls since I would need to explain how I knew. It wasn't too hard to find out but it did cost me a small amount since they sold information instead of the regular gossip groups in different houses.
"She has been crying in the girls' bathroom since the Ronald incident, I got reliable information from the gossip group. I say we check there first before checking anywhere else we can think to look." I said while jogging down the corridors towards where Hermione and the troll were located.
"Jeez, that smell is stinging my eyes," Grace said as we got close to the toilet in question and as soon as she finished her statement she realised what it meant. "The troll must be nearby, let us quickly get Hermione before she is or we are seen by it," Daphne said with clear worry in her voice before her face paled as we rounded the corner and saw the troll entering the toilet.
A piercing scream came from inside the room when we got to the door as Hermione had just noticed the troll. Throwing open the door we saw the troll swinging its club and breaking the stalls trying to swat Hermione. Seeing the girl run out of space to manoeuvre, I cast a summoning charm on her clothes and dragged her towards us.
"Daph and Grace, you get one shot to make sure it doesn't follow us as we get away from here so make it count," I said picking up the scared stiff Hermione in a fireman fashion and turning to get her away from the danger zone. "Percutio.""Bombarda." I hear from behind me followed by the howls of the troll before they start to run after me away from the thing.
When we rounded the corner, I bumped headlong into Professor McGonagall who was attracted by the troll howls. "Sorry Professor but we were running from the troll after saving our friend," I say after putting Hermione down now that she had regained some sense and helping the professor off the floor. "If you wouldn't mind looking her over real quick we can get away..." I continued before being interrupted by an enraged growl and the surprisingly fast running of the troll who was charging down the corridor we just left.
Before the professor or any of the girls could react the troll skidded around the corner and raised its club. It had visible marks around its eyes where both girls had aimed their spells, even one of its eyes being just a blackened eye socket since she blasted it. McGonagall moved to protect us as the brute went to swing its club at us however it wasn't needed as she heard me shout, "Bombarda."
My spell launched not at the troll's head but at his centre of mass as I had supercharged it with an enormous amount of magic which caused an increase in power but also a decrease in accuracy. The spell connected just above its heart and shook the walls around us due to the power of the explosion that happened, when the aftermath passed the troll could be seen still standing. Even though it was still on its feet no one panicked as it was missing most of the skin and muscle across its torso while its internal organs were blackened and broken.
The rest of the professors appeared with wands drawn just in time to see the troll hit the floor with a loud thud. "What is happening here?" Dumbledore asked snapping both our group and the professors out of the stunned silence we were in, McGonagall turned towards him before describing what had happened since she heard the howl of pain. When she had finished her explanation the eyes of the professors turned towards us looking for us to start ours.
Daphne was the first to speak out of the four of us, "We had come in search of Hermione as she had been distraught and was crying in the bathroom just down the corridor. When you told us to go back to our common rooms we thought about how she was in danger due to not knowing about the troll so we went to find her." She paused briefly to wet her dry lips before continuing, "We knew where she was due to Erik paying for the information, so we headed here only to find that the troll had found her first. Erik summoned her from the room before instructing me and Grace to distract it with spells so we could all run away. When we rounded the corner, it was like Professor McGonagall described."
Grace continued where Daphne left off by saying, "The reason why Hermione was crying was because she had experienced Ron Weasley's bullying of her since she is smarter than him." With everything said it was Dumbledore's turn to speak, "I see we would have to look into this case of bullying along with the investigation into how the trolls got into the castle. You lot are very lucky that this troll broke off from the other 4 which we teachers were dealing with while you were here. Now I must insist that you all have Madam Pomfrey check you for injuries before being escorted to your common rooms, properly this time."
