GREEN RAGE AND RED RAGE

Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Into the Light

The roar of the extraction aircraft grew louder, its engines slicing through the oppressive hum of the Hive's presence. The team moved quickly, their boots crunching against the rocky terrain as they neared the cavern's surface. For the first time in what felt like ages, fresh air mingled with the Hive's suffocating stench, offering a glimmer of hope.

"Keep moving!" the Resistance leader urged, waving the team forward.

Jester jogged beside Luther, glancing up at the rapidly descending aircraft. "Never thought I'd say this, but I actually missed cramped flying metal boxes."

Luther grunted, his glowing green eyes scanning the path behind them. "The Hive won't let us go so easily."

---

As if on cue, a deafening roar echoed from the tunnel behind them. The walls began to shift violently, pulsating with crimson light. Organic tendrils burst through the ground, writhing as if alive.

Jester sighed, spinning his blades into a defensive grip. "And there it is. The grand finale."

The leader turned sharply, their weapon raised. "We're almost out. Hold the line!"

---

The Hive surged forward, their forces more relentless than ever. Drones spilled into the cavern, their glowing red eyes fixed on the escaping group.

Luther roared, charging into the swarm with unmatched ferocity. His claws tore through metal and sinew alike, each strike echoing with the sound of destruction.

"Move!" he shouted, slamming a drone into the ground.

Jester darted between the drones, his movements swift and unpredictable. His blades flashed in the dim light, carving a path through the chaos.

"Hey, leader!" he called out. "Extraction's not gonna wait forever, you know!"

---

The aircraft hovered above the cavern's opening, its ramp lowering to reveal a squad of Resistance fighters. They shouted orders, their weapons aimed at the Hive forces below.

"Get up here, now!" one of them yelled.

The leader motioned for the team to advance. "Go! Cover each other!"

One by one, the Resistance fighters began to climb the ramp, firing at the drones as they moved. The Hive's forces pressed closer, their numbers seemingly endless.

---

Jester flipped onto the ramp, turning to cover the others. "Luther, big guy, you coming?"

Luther stood at the cavern's edge, his massive frame a barrier between the Hive and the escaping team. "Go. I'll hold them off."

Jester's grin faltered. "You're joking, right? We didn't come this far just for you to play hero."

Luther didn't respond. He slammed his claws into the ground, sending a shockwave through the advancing drones.

The leader shouted from the ramp. "Luther, fall back! That's an order!"

---

For a moment, Luther hesitated. Then, with a low growl, he turned and sprinted toward the ramp. The Hive's forces swarmed behind him, their guttural cries filling the air.

Jester reached out, grabbing Luther's arm and pulling him onto the ramp. "Took you long enough," he said, smirking.

The aircraft's engines roared as it began to ascend, the ramp closing behind them. The Hive surged upward, their tendrils reaching for the ship, but the Resistance fighters fired relentlessly, forcing them back.

---

As the aircraft broke through the cavern's ceiling, sunlight poured in, blinding after the dim confines of the Hive's lair. The team collapsed against the walls of the cargo bay, their breaths coming in ragged gasps.

Jester leaned back, his blades resting at his side. "Well, that was fun. Let's never do it again."

The leader sat across from him, their expression weary but determined. "This was just the beginning. The Hive won't stop."

Luther remained silent, his glowing eyes fixed on the horizon.

---

The aircraft soared over the barren landscape, the Hive's lair shrinking in the distance. Despite the victory, an uneasy tension lingered in the air.

Jester broke the silence. "So, what's the plan now? Find another Hive and do this all over again?"

The leader shook their head. "We regroup, assess our losses, and prepare for what's next. The Hive is spreading. This fight isn't over."

Luther finally spoke, his voice low. "We need to find their source. Cut it off at the root."

The leader nodded. "Agreed. But first, we recover. The team needs rest."

---

Jester stretched, a grin returning to his face. "Rest sounds good. Maybe a hot meal. And a shower. Preferably in that order."

Luther didn't respond, his gaze distant.

The leader glanced at him. "Luther?"

He turned to them, his expression unreadable. "The Hive is adapting. Next time, they'll be stronger."

The leader's jaw tightened. "Then we'll be ready."

Jester leaned back, closing his eyes. "You two can plan all you want. I'll just be over here pretending none of this happened."

---

As the aircraft sped toward the Resistance base, the team's thoughts turned to the battles ahead. The Hive was a relentless enemy, but they had survived this day.

For now, that was enough.
