Chapter 42- Another chance meeting?
"What was I hoping..." Akisu sighed under his breath.
He knew he was too hopeful to carry a new box of chocolates he bought today and wait at the same spot where he met Miku last night.
It was a chance encounter where he got to talk to such a beautiful girl. It wasn't like she would crave chocolate every night and even if she would, there must be someone there to give her sweet things right?
'How pathetic I could be...' Just two meetings and Akisu was already liking that girl to the point of waiting for her under the night sky without any chance of meeting her.
She didn't know him, didn't care about his existence. She was just thankful to Akisu that he gave her what she desired at that moment. Maybe she might have a good impression of him, but just that. She surely had no extra thoughts about Akisu rather than just a sweet passerby.
'I wonder if she even remembers my name...' Even though they met in the afternoon in the cafeteria, he believed that she must have too many people close to her, to remember some random fat dude.
Clutching the box tightly in his hand, Akisu decided to return to his room. His parents have already called him twice but he could no longer give them any excuse.
However, just as he turned, he halted in mid-step, upon finding a familiar face standing just inches apart from him.
"I was about to surprise you. Too bad, you turned around." Miku pouted slightly as she lowered her arms, clearly disappointed that she didn't get to startle him.
Akisu, absentmindedly, turned back to where he was facing without speaking a single word.
Miku blinked in surprise before a grin of understanding spread on her lips.
"Aki-kun!" Jumping over his shoulder, Miku finally succeeded in surprising him, as she planned.
"Ah-who....Miku-san?" Seeing Akisu acting all shocked made Miku giggle. The sound of her soft chuckle played like the most melodious note in his ear, as Akisu found himself falling into a daze.
She was looking as beautiful as ever. Her oversized black tank top went perfectly with her denim shorts. Her attractive legs drew his attention for a moment, but Akisu was able to pull himself together.
When you look nerdy and boring, women become cautious around you. That's why Akisu always remained vigilant where he allowed his gaze to rest. He could easily be judged.
"Do I look pretty?" Akisu suddenly blinked hearing her question.
He thought he did best to not let her know how he checked her out within a couple of seconds, but...
"I am really sorry!" Akisu bowed immediately, much to Miku's confusion.
"Why are you apologizing? I am seriously asking whether I look good." Hearing her words, which seemed to be the case made Akisu realize that he must be overreacting in her eyes.
Correcting his mistake, he looked back at her, and replied without hesitation, "You look b-beautiful."
It wasn't like he had never complimented a girl or a woman before, however, considering the awkward series of small incidents that transpired between them within some minutes made him a little flustered.
"Hehe~thanks. I did makeup so I can meet you and give you this gift." As Miku said, she extended an omamori in his direction which Akisu accepted listlessly.
The very fact that she sought out him, rather than coincidentally came across as big news for him.
Looking down in his hand, he found the omamori was for good luck and fortune, which sent a warm sensation across his heart just upon reading the letters on it.
"This..."
"I just only could think of this while I was in the market. Sorry for not thinking it through." Miku closed her eyes and clasped her hand in apology as she said.
Akisu immediately shook his head and dispelled her worries, "You don't need to apologize, Miku-san. You even think about gifting something to me, was already hefty enough. I am really thankful."
Miku was...taken aback by his sudden smile.
He looked so pure...so warm in that moment that she wasn't able to stop herself from hugging him.
"Ah!" Akisu suddenly felt warmth enveloping him and two thin arms encircling his back.
Akisu found himself turning stiff upon feeling her soft body pressed against him.
"M-Miku-san?"
"Just let me hold you a bit...it's peaceful here." Her calm voice made it clear that she was not embracing him on impulse but it was rather intentional.
Akisu didn't know what he should say or do, rendering him entirely motionless. Her sweet smell overwhelmed his senses and made his mind numb.
Three or so minutes later, Miku finally detached herself from Akisu with a soft smile lifting the edges of her lips.
"Thanks...I think I needed some comfort. Sorry for being selfish tho...."
"No...it's quite alright." Akisu didn't know what he was saying anymore, but there was no way he could have been offended by being hugged by Miku.
All of a sudden, the atmosphere around the two turned awkward, which surely was broken by Miku as she asked him, "Can you give me your number? I don't have my phone with me or I would have shared my contact."
Akisu was stunned for a moment before he hastily nodded and took out his phone, "Here you go."
Miku noted the number on her palm using a pen she had before she decided to go back
"It's getting late...so see you later, Aki-kun."
"Yeah, see you..." Watching her distancing back, Akisu sighed as his raised hand with which he was waving at her remained in the air.
'Haah...this really was the best birthday ever.'
